Book One Hundred Years of Social Protection

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Social Protection written by Lutz Leisering and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the rise of social protection in the global North has been widely researched, we know little about the history of social protection in the global South. This volume investigates the experiences of four middle-income countries - Brazil, India, China and South Africa - from 1920 to 2020, analysing if, when, and how these countries articulated a concern about social issues and social cohesion. As the first in-depth study of the ideational foundations of social protection policies and programmes in these four countries, the contributions demonstrate that the social question was articulated in an increasingly inclusive way. The contributions identify the ideas, beliefs, and visions that underpinned the movement towards inclusion and social peace as well as counteracting doctrines. Drawing on perspectives from the sociology of knowledge, grounded theory, historiography, discourse analysis, and process tracing, the volume will be of interest to scholars across political science, sociology, political economy, history, area studies, and global studies, as well as development experts and policymakers.

Book The Jobs Crisis in India

Download or read book The Jobs Crisis in India written by Raghavan Jagannathan and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve read about self-driving cars, blockchain, and the internet of things (IoT), registered for a massive open online course (MOOC), considered dealing in cryptocurrencies, or asked Alexa to play your favourite song, the chances are you are one of the select few Indians adjusting to the reality of a brave new world driven by technology and automation. But somewhere you will also acknowledge the growing disquiet in society, where there is job-deficient growth, rising farm distress, and youths from different communities agitating for job reservations in government or the public sector. Like elsewhere on the globe, in India, too, the worlds of those with skills to handle technology, and those without, are diverging. This book presents us with insights, explanations, and possible solutions to the aggravating jobs crisis in India. Raghavan Jagannathan comprehensively and skillfully explains the various micro and macro factors that impact the overall job scenario, including the rise of the ‘gig’ economy, the use of robots, new technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) that displace human labour on the shopfloor and in the services sector, and the economic uncertainties that lie ahead. Archaic labour laws designed to protect employees from exploitative employers are not helping matters at a time when capital is cheaper than ever. The world of long-term and predictable jobs and careers is shrinking. The only people who will benefit in this scenario are those who are willing to constantly upskill, relearn, and relocate to improve their job and income prospects. The world is getting older demographically, and older people always find the speed of change difficult to cope with; India, with its younger population, can do better, but government and business have not got their act together yet.

Book Worker Cooperatives in India

Download or read book Worker Cooperatives in India written by Timothy Kerswell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the experiences of cooperative enterprises in India that have been operated by or influenced to a significant extent by trade unions. It describes the origins of these movements in India presenting a political-strategic view of their development and, in some cases, their decline. The book also presents case studies of groundbreaking social experiments conducted in India in which trade unions have formed cooperatives for production and service provision for the working class movement. It also offers lessons learned from previous social experiments and explains how to use them for future strategies in the working class movement by using primary research undertaken on trade union cooperatives in India. With globalization often given as a reason for the decline of trade unions and transformative social movements, this book demonstrates that where movements declined it was due to their own internal weaknesses, while presenting successful case studies of movements which have shown resilience in the face of globalization. The book also gives an extensive criticism of India’s Self Employed Women’s Association as a model of a depoliticized trade union cooperative. The main lesson of this book is that cooperatives represent a viable strategy to build working class power in the 21st century in India, and elsewhere.
