Book On Electric Phenomena Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Electric Phenomena Classic Reprint written by J. Rosenthal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Electric Phenomena If we bring the two balls together, the one which had been touched by the glass and the other by the sealing-wax, they will attract each other equally, as they are laden with electricity of a similar kind; but at the moment of collision, they fall away from one another, and prove themselves non-electric. The two opposite states of electricity have unit themselves and the balls contain again both electricities in equal quantities und are therefore non-electric. Book Theory and Calculation of Transient Electric Phenomena and Oscillations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Theory and Calculation of Transient Electric Phenomena and Oscillations Classic Reprint written by Charles Proteus Steinmetz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Calculation of Transient Electric Phenomena and Oscillations A second variable, distance, also enters into many of these phenomena; and while the theory of alternating-current appara tus and phenomena usually has to deal only with functions of one independent variable, time, which variable is eliminated by the introduction of the complex quantity, in this volume we have frequently to deal with functions of time and of distance. We thus have to consider alternating functions and transient functions of time and of distance. The theory of alternating functions of time is given in Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena. Transient functions of time are studied in the first section of the present work, and in the second section are given periodic transient phenomena, which have become of industrial importance, for instance, in rectifiers, for circuit control, etc. The third section gives the theory of phenomena which are alternating in time and transient in distance, and the fourth and last section gives phenomena transient In time and In distance. Book Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism Classic Reprint written by Silvanus Phillips Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism The name electricity is also given to that branch of science which deals with electric phenomena and theories. The phenomena, and the science which deals with them, fall under four heads. The manifestations of electricity when standing still are different from those of electricity moving or flowing along hence we have to consider separately the properties of (i.) statical charges, and those of (ii.) currents. Further, electricity whirling round or in circulation possesses properties which were independently discovered under the name of (iii.) magnetism. Lastly, electricity when in a state of rapid vibration manifests new properties not possessed in any of the previous states, and causes the propagation of (iv.) waves. These four branches of the science of electricity are, however, closely connected. The object of the present work is to give the reader a general view of the main facts and their simple relations to one another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potential: And Its Application to the Explanation of Electrical Phenomena; Popularly Treated The term potential was originally introduced into the language of science in order to denote an abstract mathematical conception, which, when introduced physically, is seen to afford a simple and comprehensive expression for some of the most fundamental relations involving the idea of force. The notion of potential has thus come to form the starting-point of the modern theoretical treatment of several very important branches of science, and notably of electricity and magnetism familiarity with it has consequently become essen tial for the accurate study of even the elementary parts of these subjects. Book A Manual of Electricity

Download or read book A Manual of Electricity written by William King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Electricity: Containing Observations on the Electrical Phenomena, and Directions for the Construction of Metallic Conductors Electricity considered as connected in the ca; rious phenomena and operations of nature. The influence of electricty is felt in every department of nature, throughout the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdom. It may be said, without much exaggeration, that whether we look to Heaven above, or to the Earth beneath, we can scarcely perceive any thing that is not acted upon, and in a manner, perfectly subjected to, the operations of this wonderful fluid. If we attend to the common phenomena of our atmosphere, experiments shew, that electricity is connected with every one ofthem. If we evaporate water by means of heat, a strong electricity is produced. Lf vapour is condensed into rain, the same phe nomenon appears. If water is frozen into ice; if it descend in'hail or snow. Electricity ap pears te be equally concerned. It is mani fested on a magnificent scale in a thunder storm, when lightnings lay and thunders roll, and torrents of rain dlescend. The cor uscations of the Aurora Borealis, are proba bly displays of the electric light. The water spout exhibits its force: and the earthquake, that dreadful phenomenon of nature, is but a continued display of its awful and sublime powers. Book Electric ARC Phenomena Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electric ARC Phenomena Classic Reprint written by Ewald Rasch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Arc Phenomena A remarkable revolution is taking place in the funda mental conceptions of Physics. The Electronic Theory is furnishing wholly unexpected answers to the inquirer into the cause of light. This fact (in conjunction with other modern changes, such as improvements in incan descent lighting, etc.) imposes ou the arc-lamp engineer the task of making improvements in the very principles of light production a task which during the last decade has found, in the development of flame arc lamps, a pro visional rather than a very desirable solution. One cannot be taught how to find only how to seek. Whether we succeed or not depends largely on whether our aim has been in a negative or a positive direction with respect to the object. Book Electrical Phenomena in Parallel Conductors Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electrical Phenomena in Parallel Conductors Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Frederick Eugene Pernot and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Phenomena in Parallel Conductors, Vol. 1 It is of fundamental importance to be able to predetermine with as much numerical accuracy as possible, the phenomena which may take place in electrical systems. It is of importance first, because such predetermination, when possible, can be made at much less expense and trouble than is required to obtain the same information experimentally; and second, because information so obtained Opens a way to new developments and improvements in the application of scientific knowledge. To predetermine in a numerical way what may happen in electrical systems under different conditions requires that the various phenomena be expressed in a mathematical form or the equivalent thereof. Of course it is not the mathematical expressions themselves which are of main interest, but these expressions are necessary since they afford the only means at our disposal, other than experimental investigation, by which the desired knowledge may be obtained. In this volume an attempt has been made to set forth the mathematical developments leading to solutions for a number of problems arising in connection with the transmission of electrical energy over metallic circuits. The fundamental equations for the propagation of currents and voltages along an electrical circuit consisting of parallel conductors or the equivalent thereof have been developed and presented by a number of writers - Heaviside, Fleming, Pupin, Steinmetz, Kennedy and others; but it has been the writer's experience to note that the application of these developments to present-day engineering problems has been comparatively rare. This has been due partly to the unfamiliarity of a great many of engineers with the particular type of mathematics necessarily involved in such discussions, and partly to the fact that the presentation of the material in various publications has not been in such a form as particularly to invite its application. Book Treatise on Magnetism and Electricity Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Treatise on Magnetism and Electricity Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Andrew Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Magnetism and Electricity, Vol. 1 of 2 As to the mode of treatment I have adopted, a few words are necessary. The book is not a treatise on the mathematical theory of electricity merely, but is, I hope, to some extent successful in bringing the theory and practice together. Thus while in general assuming some elementary acquaintance on the part of the reader with electrical phenomena and their laws, I have endeavoured first to look at the phenomena as they present themselves, and then to show how they fall into their places in the general scheme of electrical action, and to point out the consequences to which they lead. As stated in the words of Bacon I have placed on the title-page, it is a double process by which natural philosophy advances; we ascend from experiments to causes, and descend from causes to experiments, and it is most requisite that these two parts be severally considered and handled. Download or read book Elementary Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism Classic Reprint written by George Carey Foster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism The endeavour to carry out this idea implied the keeping in view from the beginning of the dual character of electrification and the emphasising of the essential part played in the most familiar electrical phenomena by the dielectric medium in which they occur. This led to the early introduction of the idea of lines and tubes of force, and involved the rewriting of several chapters or parts of chapters. Book A Physical Theory of Electrification Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Physical Theory of Electrification Classic Reprint written by Fernando Sanford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Physical Theory of Electrification The following attempt at a mechanical explanation of some of the simpler phenomena of electrification is due to the Opinion that the faraday-maxwell theory, based, as it is, upon the assumption of two electricities capable of neutralizing each other's properties, and of at traction as the fundamental phenomenon - making repulsion a special case of attraction - has proved inadequate to explain many of the well known phenomena of static electricity, and has broken down completely in attempting to explain current electricity. I have tried elsewhere to show that the physical lines or tubes of force which are an essential part of this theory are incompetent to ex plain the phenomena for which they were invented, and are inconsistent with our experimental knowledge of facts. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to show that the mechanical theory of electrification may be greatly simplified by starting with Franklin's theory of a single electricity and by regarding repulsion, rather than attraction, as the fundamental phenomenon. Since it is the purpose of this paper to present a physical, rather than a mathematical, theory of electricity, no attempt has been made to state the subject in a mathematical form. The quantitative relations of the electric field have been very satisfactorily expressed both in terms of action at a distance and in terms of lines or tubes of force. It is believed that the equations based upon the notion of lines of force will apply equally well to this presentation of the subject by merely changing the necessary plus and minus signs. Book Electricity at High Pressures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electricity at High Pressures Classic Reprint written by Elihu Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity at High Pressures MY interest in the subject we shall consider this evenia is the? More pronounced fiom the fact that I began my experience with? Electrical phenomena by working with relatively high pressures or potentials. My first machine, constructed when I was eleven years of age, was a high potential apparatus, giving about volts or thereabouts. It was a frictional electric machine, the main part being a wine-bottle revolved upon an axis, to which was added the usual rubber, silk flap, and prime conductor. Electrical development on the large scale has in the past few few years been going on in the direction of increase of electrical pressures, or increase of potential differences, and this fact gives a renewed interest. The prime cause of all electrical manifesta tions is, of course, difference of pressure or potential. That we have much more to learn in this fascinating field is evidenced by the condition of our knowledge in regard to the phenomena of lightning, the aurora, comets' tails, and possibly, also, of the solar corona. It is about one hundred years since Volta studied the voltaic battery and gave to the world a source of steady currents at low pressure. Long before that, however, the older experi ments of the development of electric charges by friction, and the properties of charged bodies had been studied and wondered at.
