Download or read book On Dramatic Method Classic Reprint written by Harley Granville-Barker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Dramatic Method For a hundred and twenty years after we find Shakespeare made a fetish to be ever more and more blindly worshipped; while if the learned are not too hard on contemporary drama, it is chiefly because they think it (with some reason) beneath their notice altogether. But When - almost Within my own recollection - this comes to life again, there, after a little, was Mr. A. B. Walkley, still ready to use Aristotle as an occasional egg, so to speak, for the making of those excellently light omelettes which he used to serve us up in the Times. Book The Dramatic Method of Teaching Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dramatic Method of Teaching Classic Reprint written by Harriet Finlay-Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Method of Teaching That I came to the conclusion that there was a great need of a radical change. So little was there of initiative or originality on the part of the children themselves, that I felt sure nothing short of a surgical operation - a com plete cutting away of old habits and the formation of a new school tradition - would meet the case. The first aid which I invoked was nature study, mainly from its aesthetic standpoint and from the verv first I realized that, to be Of any value, it must be nature real/y sfua'z'ea' by t/ze c/zz'la' flimsdf. It must not be nature filtered through pic torial illustration, textbook, dried specimen, and scientific terms, finally dribbled into passive children's minds minus the joy of assimilation; but it must be the real study of living and working nature, absorbed in the open air under conditions which allow for free movement under natural discipline. And Since nature is the storehouse from which poet and artist draw their inspiration, it naturally follows that we found it but a short step from the study of the open book of nature into the Elysian fields of literature and the arts. Nature study then became the basis of every possible lesson; and the school nature gardens and na ture rambles supplied subject matter for lessons In Singing, reading, writing, arithmetic, drawing, painting, recitation, composition, grammar, and much of the geography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of the One-Act Play: A Study in Dramatic Construction The One-act play is with us and is asking for consideration. Theatre managers, stage designers, devotees of the drama, actors, drama tists, and University professors recognize its presence. It is to be noted, too, that no apology is being offered for the better sort of contem porary One-act plays. As a matter of fact, none is needed. They justify themselves as worth-while studies of human life and human character. Without adequate first-hand ac quaintance with the fundamentals of life, they cannot be written any more than can the three act form. The One - act play is no longer to be dismissed with a careless wave of the hand. It has come to be a fact in contemporary dra matic expression. Book Art of the Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art of the Drama Classic Reprint written by Fred B. Millett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art of the Drama This book is not a history of the drama. Nor is it a manual for the multitudes who aspire to write plays and sell them. It is a tool for the use of those who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their enjoyment of plays witnessed in the theater or read in the study. As a textbook, it may prove useful in the study of the history of the drama or of the drama as a literary type, or in such a course as the Introduction to the Study of Drama as given at the University of Chicago. The book is divided into three parts, each of which emphasizes a particular aspect of the drama. Part I is mainly devoted to the historical aspect of the drama, the spirit of the age, the nature of the theater and audience in each of the major periods in dramatic his tory. It also contains a general discussion of the major forms or types of drama - tragedy, comedy, melodrama, and farce - and a more detailed consideration of the types of drama and comedy characteristic of each period. Part II considers the major modes of drama - classicism, romanticism, realism, sentimentalism, symbol ism, and expressionism. Part III concerns the major problems of dramatic technique and the characteristic solutions of those prob lems in the various types and modes and periods of drama. There is no question that it would have been more logical to con sider first the technical, second the aesthetic, and third the historical approach to the study of drama, and students of a logical turn of mind will have no difficulty in using the text in that order. But we have come to feel that it will, in general, be preferable for the student to master the facts in Part I before he ventures upon the more theoretical considerations of Parts II and III. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Drama in the High School Following these observations have succeeded five years of experimenting in the formulation of a course in the history and technique of the drama, which would meet the needs of high school pupils. Even yet, the plan is not en tirely satisfactory - but each class helps me to come a little nearer an adequate working plan, and each of the last three years I have enjoyed the inestimable privilege of courses in history of drama and playwriting under the instruction of Professor G. P. Baker, of Harvard, whose interest and co-operation have been of the greatest aid in all my problems. Without these courses, or their equivalent in individual research, I do not see how it is possible to do justice to work in the drama, an art which is so much misunderstood. Book Greek Prose Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Prose Composition Classic Reprint written by Henry Carr Pearson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Classic Reprint written by Ada M. Skinner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Learning to read is more than learning to recog nize and pronounce printed words. Reading In a listless manner is a dull and unprofitable exercise. In teaching children to read, the good primary teacher seeks, therefore, by furnishing an incentive through interesting material, and by stimulating intelligent and reasoned activity, to prevent discouragement and to banish ennui. Hence the value of selections that are dramatic in quality, and, to some extent, dramatic in form; for they encourage the children to read as if they were participants in the action of the story. Such material satisfies the child's love of action, stim ulates his imagination, and, by keeping his faculties alert, helps him to read with understanding and with intelligent inflection. Thus the gap between the spoken language of his daily life and the printed lan guage of the page is bridged over, and reading be comes to him a real way of acquiring and conveying ideas. Book Another Book on the Theatre Classic Reprint

Download or read book Another Book on the Theatre Classic Reprint written by George Jean Nathan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Another Book on the Theatre The ambition to become a dramatic critic assails probably nine city boy-children out of ten in that epoch which lies between their ambition to become President of the United States (an ambition rejected not later than the age of eleven by all better-class youngsters) and the somewhat loftier subsequent ambition to marry Gaby Deslys. This ambition to grow up to be a professional remarker on the theatre is variously inculcated in youths. In the first place, they have at a very early age read the critical works of Mr. William Winter. A careful perusal of these standard critical works has convinced them that dramatic criticism is the pastime of taking luncheon with beautiful and prominent Shakespearean actresses. In the second place, they have read in the Sunday newspaper supplements many interviews by the dramatic critic of the paper in which that bored bird has recited the manner in which superb actresses have received him in their lacy peignoirs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freytag's Technique of Drama: An Exposition of Dramatic Composition and Art Hellenic choral theater, the structure for the mys tery play, and the complete inclosed room of the modern stage. It may be considered certain that some of the fundamental laws of dramatic production will remain in force for all time; in general, however, not only the vital requisites of the drama have been found in continuous devel opment, but also the artistic means of producing its effects. Let no one think that the technique of poetry has been advanced through the creations of the greatest poets only; we may say without self-exaltation that we at present have clearer ideas upon the highest art effects in the drama and upon the use of technical equipment, than had Lessing, Schiller and Goethe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Festival: A Consideration of the Lyrical Method as a Factor in Preparatory Education Such are the facts which explain the continually increasing burden which the school is called upon to carry - all those fads and frills against which our utilitarians have been crying out. What these objectors to our miscellaneous curriculum overlook is that these things are veritably the bread of life for the child, quite as necessary as all the proficiencies for which they clamour; be cause without them the powers of life, of emotion and imagination and all the leisure accomplish ments which are essential to the development of manhood and womanhood, must perish. The prob lem is a much larger one and a more profoundly serious one than these critics of our modernised schools realise. Download or read book Drama on the Air Classic Reprint written by David R. Mackey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drama on the Air I have attempted to show that professional attitude, strong back ground, and knowledge of and ability to use certain techniques will result in richer personal satisfaction to the player and director and better fare for the listener. In the best of professional tradition, the reader is given background, means and method, and materials and application. In this book I have tried to combine the theory necessary for complete understanding of the radio play as a dramatic form with the tools and techniques that make it possible to translate the radio play into living drama. In attempting to write a definitive text, I have incurred obligations that I can only acknowledge, never repay. To my former colleague, Dr. William Peery, of the Department of English of the University of Texas, I am extremely indebted for criticism of portions of the first draft of Section One, and for many helpful suggestions on style and content of the book as a whole. I am also indebted for suggestions made by Dr. Albert Johnson, of the Department of Drama, and Mr. Thomas D. Rishworth, of Radio House, the Uni versity of Texas. I am most indebted to a group of Evanston friends. Professor Don ley Feddersen and Dr. Martin Maloney, of the Radio Department of Northwestern University's School of Speech, made extensive com ments on the manuscript and showed their real friendship by not allowing it to interfere with their critical comments and suggestions. Dr. Walter Scott, of the Drama faculty of the School of Speech, made some extremely helpful observations on Chapter 4. It is a real pleasure to record my obligation to Mr. Homer Heck, Program Manager of nbc's Central Division, who checked the entire manuscript. His assistance was invaluable.
