Book Localization And Solitary Waves In Solid Mechanics

Download or read book Localization And Solitary Waves In Solid Mechanics written by Alan R Champneys and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of recent reprints and new material on fundamentally nonlinear problems in structural systems which demonstrate localized responses to continuous inputs. It has two intended audiences. For mathematicians and physicists it should provide useful new insights into a classical yet rapidly developing area of application of the rich subject of dynamical systems theory. For workers in structural and solid mechanics it introduces a new methodology for dealing with structural localization and the related topic of the generation of solitary waves. Applications range from classical problems such as the buckling of cylindrical shells, twisted rods and pipelines, to the folding of geological strata, the failure of sandwich structures and the propagation of solitary waves in suspended beam systems.

Book Weakly Nonlocal Solitary Waves and Beyond All Orders Asymptotics

Download or read book Weakly Nonlocal Solitary Waves and Beyond All Orders Asymptotics written by John P. Boyd and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-09-23 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first thorough examination of weakly nonlocal solitary waves, which are just as important in applications as their classical counterparts. The book describes a class of waves that radiate away from the core of the disturbance but are nevertheless very long-lived nonlinear disturbances.

Book The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles

Download or read book The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles written by Bruce A. Finlayson and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book covers the solution of differential equations in science and engineering in such as way as to provide an introduction for novices before progressing toward increasingly more difficult problems. The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles describes variational principles, including how to find them and how to use them to construct error bounds and create stationary principles. The book also illustrates how to use simple methods to find approximate solutions, shows how to use the finite element method for more complex problems, and provides detailed information on error bounds. Problem sets make this book ideal for self-study or as a course text.

Book Reaction Diffusion Computers

Download or read book Reaction Diffusion Computers written by Andrew Adamatzky and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-10-05 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces a hot topic of novel and emerging computing paradigms and architectures -computation by travelling waves in reaction-diffusion media. A reaction-diffusion computer is a massively parallel computing device, where the micro-volumes of the chemical medium act as elementary few-bit processors, and chemical species diffuse and react in parallel. In the reaction-diffusion computer both the data and the results of the computation are encoded as concentration profiles of the reagents, or local disturbances of concentrations, whilst the computation per se is performed via the spreading and interaction of waves caused by the local disturbances. The monograph brings together results of a decade-long study into designing experimental and simulated prototypes of reaction-diffusion computing devices for image processing, path planning, robot navigation, computational geometry, logics and artificial intelligence. The book is unique because it gives a comprehensive presentation of the theoretical and experimental foundations, and cutting-edge computation techniques, chemical laboratory experimental setups and hardware implementation technology employed in the development of novel nature-inspired computing devices. Key Features: - Non-classical and fresh approach to theory of computation. - In depth exploration of novel and emerging paradigms of nature-inspired computing. - Simple to understand cellular-automata models will help readers/students to design their own computational experiments to advance ideas and concepts described in the book . - Detailed description of receipts and experimental setups of chemical laboratory reaction-diffusion processors will make the book an invaluable resource in practical studies of non-classical and nature-inspired computing architectures . - Step by step explanations of VLSI reaction-diffusion circuits will help students to design their own types of wave-based processors.Key Features: - Non-classical and fresh approach to theory of computation. - Step by step explanations of VLSI reaction-diffusion circuits will help students to design their own types of wave-based processors.

Book Dust Plasma Interaction in Space

Download or read book Dust Plasma Interaction in Space written by P. K. Shukla and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust is ubiquitous in the universe and responsible for stellar and planetary formation. Virtually all previous studies have considered the dust particulates to be a charge neutral component. Satellite missions such as Voyager revealed the extent to which charged dust plays a role in astrophysics. In most areas dust exists in the presence of a dilute plasma. In such a plasma environment the dust becomes charged to a variety of processes (eg photo-ionisation, collisions with electrons and ions, thermionic emission etc). Closer to home in the Earth's mesosphere, rocket measurements and radar observations conclusively demonstrate the importance of charged dust in forming complex structures responsible for Polar Mesospheric Summer Echoes. This book is the outcome of a periodic collaboration between a small group of scientists meeting twice a year at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland over a period of three years. The book begins with a description of the fundamental physical processes which characterise dusty plasmas. Starting with charging and shielding of isolated dust particles in a plasma environment, the review progresses to non-linear dust dynamics of spherical and irregular dust. In an ensemble of a dust plasma system collective processes begin to manifest themselves in the form of new wave modes and instabilities which play an important role in the collective behaviour displayed in space and astrophysical environment. Finally more exotic topics, such as the Ising model for irregular dust grain alignment, classical Casimir forces and chargeons are explored.
