Book excerpt: China's banking system has been gradually transformed from a centralized, government-owned and government-controlled provider of loans into an increasingly competitive market in which different types of banks, including several U.S. banks, strive to provide a variety of financial services. Only three banks in China remain fully government-owned; most banks have been transformed into mixed ownership entities in which the central or local government may or may not be a major equity holder in the bank.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Chinese Currency, Preliminary Remarks About the Monetary Reform in China It is questionable, not only if it is advisable, but even if it is possible to introduce at once one single system for the whole of such a country as China; The best monetary system for China in the first twenty or thirty years; Advisable, as an introductory period, to have two standards together: a gold exchange standard as far as possible, and also at the same time a silver standard; China requires as soon as possible an uniform currency, and, as far as practicable, a monetary system with a stable valuta; How to start with a stable gold unit and meanwhile maintain a silver currency; A unit with a fixed relation to gold should be selected from the very start; How to bring such a theoretical or fictitious unit into practical use and make it a real unit for the calculation of daily transactions though it be not minted into hard coins; The Amsterdam Exchange Bank; The Hamburger Giro Bank; The great force of the Amsterdam Exchange Bank was derived from the institution of a bank guilder, which in later years existed no longer as a coin but acted as a fictitious unit and procured absolute stability to all payments; The bank, that will act as a central bank of issue, will also take the initiative of introducing such a bank unit; The bank must also be ready to make transfers in that fictitious gold unit from one account to another; The bank may be able to issue notes to bearer; The gold value of these notes can be secured by offering a redemption in gold value abroad About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report written by Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, published by the U.S. Government and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in early 2011, is the official government report on the United States financial collapse and the review of major financial institutions that bankrupted and failed, or would have without help from the government. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Download or read book Trust in Troubled Times written by Brett Sheehan and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book traces the development of banking and paper money in republican Tianjin in order to explore the creation of social trust in financial institutions. Framing the study around Bian Baimei, a conscientious branch manager of the Bank of China, Brett Sheehan analyzes the actions of bankers, officials, and local elites as they tried to overcome political and financial crises and instill trust in the banking system. After early failures in promoting trust, government authority as a regulator of the financial system gradually increased, peaking in 1935, when the state unified the money supply for the first time in several hundred years. Concurrently, when local elites proved unable to develop successful strategies to make people trust the system, their influence declined. The need for trust in increasingly complex financial arrangements redefined state-society relations, simultaneously enhancing state power and creating new constraints on the actions of both elites and governments. Trust in Troubled Times is a valuable new perspective on the economic, social, and political history of modern China.
