Book Analysis on Non Riemannian Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Analysis on Non Riemannian Symmetric Spaces written by Mogens Flensted-Jensen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986-12-31 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic analysis on Riemannian semisimple symmetric spaces and on special types of non-Riemannian semisimple symmetric spaces are well-established theories. This book presents a systematic treatment of the basic problems on semisimple symmetric spaces and a discussion of some of the more important recent developments in the field. The author's primary contribution has been his idea of how to construct the discrete series for such a space. In this book a fundamental role is played by the ideas behind that construction, namely the duality principle, the orbit picture related to it, and the definition of representations by means of distributions on the orbits. Intended as a text at the upper graduate level, the book assumes a basic knowledge of Fourier analysis, differential geometry, and functional analysis. In particular, the reader should have a good knowledge of the general theory of real and complex Lie algebras and Lie groups and of the root and weight theories for semisimple Lie algebras and Lie groups.

Book Differential Geometry Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Differential Geometry Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces written by Sigurdur Helgason and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001-06-12 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great book ... a necessary item in any mathematical library. --S. S. Chern, University of California A brilliant book: rigorous, tightly organized, and covering a vast amount of good mathematics. --Barrett O'Neill, University of California This is obviously a very valuable and well thought-out book on an important subject. --Andre Weil, Institute for Advanced Study The study of homogeneous spaces provides excellent insights into both differential geometry and Lie groups. In geometry, for instance, general theorems and properties will also hold for homogeneous spaces, and will usually be easier to understand and to prove in this setting. For Lie groups, a significant amount of analysis either begins with or reduces to analysis on homogeneous spaces, frequently on symmetric spaces. For many years and for many mathematicians, Sigurdur Helgason's classic Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces has been--and continues to be--the standard source for this material. Helgason begins with a concise, self-contained introduction to differential geometry. Next is a careful treatment of the foundations of the theory of Lie groups, presented in a manner that since 1962 has served as a model to a number of subsequent authors. This sets the stage for the introduction and study of symmetric spaces, which form the central part of the book. The text concludes with the classification of symmetric spaces by means of the Killing-Cartan classification of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbb{C}$ and Cartan's classification of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbb{R}$, following a method of Victor Kac. The excellent exposition is supplemented by extensive collections of useful exercises at the end of each chapter. All of the problems have either solutions or substantial hints, found at the back of the book. For this edition, the author has made corrections and added helpful notes and useful references. Sigurdur Helgason was awarded the Steele Prize for Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces and Groups and Geometric Analysis.

Book Strong Rigidity of Locally Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Strong Rigidity of Locally Symmetric Spaces written by G. Daniel Mostow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1973-12-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locally symmetric spaces are generalizations of spaces of constant curvature. In this book the author presents the proof of a remarkable phenomenon, which he calls "strong rigidity": this is a stronger form of the deformation rigidity that has been investigated by Selberg, Calabi-Vesentini, Weil, Borel, and Raghunathan. The proof combines the theory of semi-simple Lie groups, discrete subgroups, the geometry of E. Cartan's symmetric Riemannian spaces, elements of ergodic theory, and the fundamental theorem of projective geometry as applied to Tit's geometries. In his proof the author introduces two new notions having independent interest: one is "pseudo-isometries"; the other is a notion of a quasi-conformal mapping over the division algebra K (K equals real, complex, quaternion, or Cayley numbers). The author attempts to make the account accessible to readers with diverse backgrounds, and the book contains capsule descriptions of the various theories that enter the proof.

Book Harmonic Analysis and Special Functions on Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Harmonic Analysis and Special Functions on Symmetric Spaces written by Gerrit Heckman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1995-02-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two parts of this sharply focused book, Hypergeometric and Special Functions and Harmonic Analysis on Semisimple Symmetric Spaces, are derived from lecture notes for the European School of Group Theory, a forum providing high-level courses on recent developments in group theory. The authors provide students and researchers with a thorough and thoughtful overview, elaborating on the topic with clear statements of definitions and theorems and augmenting these withtime-saving examples. An extensive set of notes supplements the text.Heckman and Schlichtkrull extend the ideas of harmonic analysis on semisimple symmetric spaces to embrace the theory of hypergeometric and spherical functions and show that the K-variant Eisenstein integrals for G/H are hypergeometric functions under this theory. They lead readers from the fundamentals of semisimple symmetric spaces of G/H to the frontier, including generalization, to the Riemannian case. This volume will interest harmonic analysts, those working on or applying the theory of symmetric spaces; it will also appeal to those with an interest in special functions.Extends ideas of harmonic analysis on symmetric spacesFirst treatment of the theory to include hypergeometric and spherical functionsLinks algebraic, analytic, and geometric methods

Book Differential Geometry Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Differential Geometry Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces written by Sigurdur Helgason and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1979-02-09 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is intended as a textbook and reference work on three topics in the title. Together with a volume in progress on "Groups and Geometric Analysis" it supersedes my "Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces," published in 1962. Since that time several branches of the subject, particularly the function theory on symmetric spaces, have developed substantially. I felt that an expanded treatment might now be useful.

Book Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces written by Sigurdur Helgason and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sigurdur Helgason's Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces was quickly recognized as a remarkable and important book. For many years, it was the standard text both for Riemannian geometry and for the analysis and geometry of symmetric spaces. Several generations of mathematicians relied on it for its clarity and careful attention to detail. Although much has happened in the field since the publication of this book, as demonstrated by Helgason's own three-volume expansion of the original work, this single volume is still an excellent overview of the subjects. For instance, even though there are now many competing texts, the chapters on differential geometry and Lie groups continue to be among the best treatments of the subjects available. There is also a well-developed treatment of Cartan's classification and structure theory of symmetric spaces. The last chapter, on functions on symmetric spaces, remains an excellent introduction to the study of spherical functions, the theory of invariant differential operators, and other topics in harmonic analysis. This text is rightly called a classic.
