Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Amal vanishes without a trace, Malak not only inherits her sister’s wedding but also her fiancé and her house. It is an inconvenient convenience, which Malak and Taj endure as if they are keeping the slot open for the day Amal walks back through the front door. Amal, however, keeps them waiting. But everything changes when Malak steps into a lift one day. She discovers that she isn’t made only of grief for her brilliant sister, and a risky double life with another man ensues. A life that leads inexorably to a new question – one just as burning as the question of what has happened to Amal: can a Muslim woman not have two husbands? Fired by Shaida Kazie Ali’s bold imagination and sparking with her wry sense of humour, Lessons in Husbandry is a sad and funny celebration of what binds us and what sets us free.

Book The Vanishing of Katharina Linden

Download or read book The Vanishing of Katharina Linden written by Helen Grant and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Helen Grant's The Glass Demon. After Pia’s grandmother dies in a freak accident, the neighbors in her little German hometown of Bad Münstereifel glance at Pia with wary eyes. But then something else captures the community’s attention: the vanishing of Katharina Linden. Katharina was last seen at a parade, dressed as Snow White. Then, like a character in a Grimm’s fairy tale, she disappeared. Ten-year-old Pia and her only friend, the unpopular StinkStefan, suspect that Katharina has been spirited away by the supernatural. Their investigation is inspired by such local legends as that of Unshockable Hans, visited by witches in the form of cats, or of the knight whose son is doomed to hunt forever. Then another girl vanishes, and Pia is plunged into a new and unnerving place, one far away from fairy tales—and perilously close to adulthood.

Book Tiny Lights for Travellers

Download or read book Tiny Lights for Travellers written by Naomi K. Lewis and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governor General’s Award Finalist: A “wry, moving” memoir of a woman retracing her grandfather’s escape from Amsterdam during the Holocaust (Alison Pick, Booker-nominated author of Between Gods). Why couldn’t I occupy the world as those model-looking women did, with their flowing hair, pulling their tiny bright suitcases as if to say, I just arrived from elsewhere, and I already belong here, and this sidewalk belongs to me? When her marriage suddenly ends, and a diary documenting her beloved Opa’s escape from the Nazi-occupied Netherlands in the summer of 1942 is discovered, Naomi Lewis decides to retrace his route to freedom. Travelling alone from Amsterdam to Lyon, she discovers family secrets and her own narrative as a second-generation Jewish Canadian. With vulnerability, humour, and wisdom, Lewis’s memoir of her journey, interspersed with excerpts from her grandfather’s diary, asks tough questions about her identity as a secular Jew, the accuracy of family stories, and the impact of the Holocaust on subsequent generations.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Music and World Christianities

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Music and World Christianities written by Suzel Ana Reily and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Music and World Christianities investigates music's role in everyday practice and social history across the diversity of Christian religions and practices around the globe. The volume explores Christian communities in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia as sites of transmission, transformation, and creation of deeply diverse musical traditions. The book's contributors, while mostly rooted in ethnomusicology, examine Christianities and their musics in methodologically diverse ways, engaging with musical sound and structure, musical and social history, and ethnography of music and musical performance. These broad materials explore five themes: music and missions, music and religious utopias (and other oppositional religious communities), music and conflict, music and transnational flows, and music and everyday life. The volume as a whole, then, approaches Christian groups and their musics as diverse and powerful windows into the way in which music, religious ideas, capital, and power circulate (and change) between places, now and historically. It also tries to take account of the religious self-understandings of these groups, presenting Christian musical practice and exchange as encompassing and negotiating deeply felt and deeply rooted moral and cultural values. Given that the centerpiece of the volume is Christian religious musical practice, the volume reveals the active role music plays in maintaining and changing religious, moral, and cultural values in a long history of intercultural and transnational encounters.

Book Subjects in Constructions Canonical and Non Canonical

Download or read book Subjects in Constructions Canonical and Non Canonical written by Marja-Liisa Helasvuo and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes constructions with non-canonical subjects in individual languages and cross-linguistically, drawing on insights from cognitive and discourse-functional linguistics. Prototypical subjects have often been characterized in terms of their semantic, syntactic and discourse features, such as animacy, agentivity, topicality, referentiality, definiteness and autonomy of existence of the subject referent. A non-canonical subject is one that lacks some of these features. This may be reflected in its meaning, grammatical coding, and/or discourse function. In discussing non-canonical subjects in individual languages and cross-linguistically, the chapters in the volume address the following more general topics: What kinds of grammatical, semantic and discourse criteria can be used to distinguish subjects from non-subjects? To what extent are subject criteria construction-specific? What kinds of constructions have non-canonical subjects? What are the semantic and discourse functions of constructions with non-canonical subjects? Are subjects which are grammatically non-canonical also atypical in terms of their discourse features?

Book Choosing Pearls

Download or read book Choosing Pearls written by Margaret Elizabeth Schleier Stahl and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-11-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we could change our lives by Choosing Pearls? An oyster can transform an irritant into an iridescent pearl. How awesome! What if we could do the same in our own lives? What if we could take the debris—the hardships we endure—and alter them into precious gems? If you’re in need of a fresh perspective, feel overwhelmed or underwhelmed and don’t want your life to unravel...Choosing Pearls was written for you. In it, Margaret Elizabeth, unpacks inspirational stories from her life, her family, and a few familiar people, to illustrate how the pearl analogy has helped form meaning from memories. Part autobiographical, part energizing and fully magical, this memoir is entirely entertaining as Margaret shares her adventures, misadventures, heartaches and hopes. Weaving 26 personal anecdotes—authentic pearls—onto a thread of real silk, we experience how she chooses to use every letter of the alphabet (A-Z) to layer her life in these stories. Dance and celebrate along this shiny pearl pathway to share her encounters with relatives and friends, as well as America’s Got Talent, The Backstreet Boys, Barack Obama, Margaret Atwood, Margaret Trudeau, Oprah Winfrey, Tammy Faye Bakker, and a variety of other polished pearls. Most importantly, Margaret’s memoir offers the invitation and opportunity to actually examine your own personal story—your name and your calling—in a new and profoundly positive light. After all, WE get to choose which pearl our lives will resemble: the artificial or the authentic one.
