Book Olympians Demigods and Rebels

Download or read book Olympians Demigods and Rebels written by Michele Amitrani and published by Michele Amitrani. This book was released on 2022-10-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even gods can bleed… In this collection the myths of three of the most defiant characters in Greek mythology—Persephone, Sisyphus and Orpheus—are retold like never before. In Scion of Gaia, Persephone finds her mother’s mind broken by madness. With the world withering and mortals dying by the thousands with every turn of the Sun, will the Queen of the Underworld stop the collapse of the world and save her mother from certain death, or will she be forced to pay her due to destiny by committing the ultimate crime? In King of Defiance Sisyphus is a man sentenced by the Olympians to pay for his disobedience by pushing a boulder up a mountain in the depths of Tartarus until the end of time. But prophecies and omens say he must face the gods and that resilience will be his best ally against them. When an action meant to save his kingdom brings Sisyphus against the most powerful of the Olympians, the battle for his soul truly begins. And in Song of Forever, we meet young Princess Macaria, who turns to stories of love and loss among mortals to seek solace in a world without happy endings. After the queen assigns Macaria more responsibility in the ruling of the Netherworld, the young goddess learns that justice is swift but seldom fair. When the mortal Orpheus breaches the Underworld to retrieve his wife, he threatens the very balance of life and death. With Orpheus’ destiny in her hands, will she choose what history and duty say is necessary—or follow her heart? How far are our heroes willing to go to break the status quo and claim their freedom?

Book Percy Jackson s Greek Gods

Download or read book Percy Jackson s Greek Gods written by Rick Riordan and published by Disney Electronic Content. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that." Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume--a must for home, library, and classroom shelves--as stunning as it is entertaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on the three Flavian epic poets (Valerius Flaccus, Statius and Silius Italicus) for the first time critically engages with a unique set-up in Roman literary history: the survival of four epic poems from the same period (Argonautica; Thebaid, Achilleid; Punica). The interactions of these poems with each other and their contemporary context are explored by over 20 experts and emerging scholars. Topics studied include the political dimension of the epics, their use of epic themes and techniques and their intertextual relationship among each other and to predecessors. The recent upsurge of interest in Flavian epic has been focussed on the analysis of individual works. Looking at these poems together now allows the appreciation of their similarities and nuanced differences in the light of their shared position in literary and political history and gives insights into the literary culture of the period. The different approaches and backgrounds of the contributors ensure the presentation of a range of viewpoints. Together they offer new perspectives to the still increasing readership of Flavian epic poetry but also to anyone interested in the epic genre within Roman literature or other cultures more generally.

Book Buddhist World

  • Author : Glen Valentine
  • Publisher : Scientific e-Resources
  • Release : 2018-01-16
  • ISBN : 1839473622
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Buddhist World written by Glen Valentine and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhism is a religion practiced by an estimated 495 million in the world, as of the 2010s, representing 9% to 10% of the world's total population. China is the country with the largest population of Buddhists, approximately 244 million or 18.2% of its total population. They are mostly followers of Chinese schools of Mahayana, making this the largest body of Buddhist traditions. Mahayana, also practiced in broader East Asia, is followed by over half of world Buddhists. The second largest body of Buddhist schools is Theravada, mostly followed in Southeast Asia. The third and smallest body of schools, Vajrayana, is followed mostly in Tibet, the Himalayan region, Mongolia and parts of Russia, but has been disseminated throughout the world. Buddhism was almost entirely unknown in western countries until the 19th century. European diplomats and scholars who travelled and lived in Asia collected Buddhist texts to have them translated into English, German and French. Awareness of Buddhism arrived in the United States around the 1840's when the first Chinese immigrants settled in the western part of the country. Still, in general Buddhism remained poorly understood in the west until the 1960's when the first Buddhist teachers started arriving and quickly found thousands of followers. However curious westerners without serious study tended to view Buddhism as more of a mystic movement, rather than an encompassing spirituality involving meditation. Buddhism gained more popularity across Western culture by the end of the 20th century, when celebrities and other well-known people like Steve Jobs, Richard Gere or Phil Jackson openly talked about the positive influence Buddhism has had on their lives. The author of this book has joined the debate and examines the issues bringing fresh insights on the subject. In this book the author seeks to prove that the consciousness of the individual and individuality, which at the empirical level involves the rise of private property, family and the state, finds its most sophisticated and rational expression in early Buddhism.

Book excerpt: Published by Pomona College of Art in association with Getty Publications José Clemente Orozco’s 1930 mural Prometheus, created for the Pomona College campus, is a dramatic and gripping examination of heroism. This thoughtful exhibition catalogue examines the multiple ways Orozco’s vision resonates with four artists working in Mexico today. Isa Carrillo, Adela Goldbard, Rita Ponce de León, and Naomi Rincón- Gallardo share Orozco’s interest in history, justice, social protest, storytelling, and power yet approach these topics from their own twenty-first-century sensibilities. These artists activate Orozco’s mural by reinvigorating Prometheus for a contemporary audience. This gorgeous volume presents substantial new scholarship connecting Mexican muralism with contemporary art practices. Three new essays address different aspects of Orozco, Prometheus, and the connections between Los Angeles and Mexico. The contributors take on a broad range of topics, from murals as public art to how Orozco’s work fits into contemporary frameworks of aesthetic theory. The book also includes a chronology, vibrant reproductions, and critical essays focused on the con-temporary artists.

Book Black Prometheus

Download or read book Black Prometheus written by Jared Hickman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did an ancient mythological figure who stole fire from the gods become a face of the modern, lending his name to trailblazing spaceships and radical publishing outfits alike? How did Prometheus come to represent a notion of civilizational progress through revolution--scientific, political, and spiritual--and thereby to center nothing less than a myth of modernity itself ? The answer Black Prometheus gives is that certain features of the myth--its geographical associations, iconography of bodily suffering, and function as a limit case in a long tradition of absolutist political theology--made it ripe for revival and reinvention in a historical moment in which freedom itself was racialized, in what was the Age both of Atlantic revolution and Atlantic slavery. Contained in the various incarnations of the modern Prometheus--whether in Mary Shelley's esoteric novel, Frankenstein, Denmark Vesey's real-world recruitment of slave rebels, or popular travelogues representing Muslim jihadists against the Russian empire in the Caucasus-- is a profound debate about the means and ends of liberation in our globalized world. Tracing the titan's rehabilitation and unprecedented exaltation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries across a range of genres and geographies turns out to provide a way to rethink the relationship between race, religion, and modernity and to interrogate the Eurocentric and secularist assumptions of our deepest intellectual traditions of critique.
