Book excerpt: In 1907, William Winlock Miller High School, known as Olympia High School, first opened its doors to the sons and daughters of the South Puget Sound area's pioneer families. Three campuses and a century later, the school remains a vibrant part of the community and a herald of academic and athletic excellence across the state. A walk through time, this volume illustrates the pictorial history of the buildings and campuses, well-known personalities, student life, and traditions that have left an indelible mark on the history of the region. This book touches upon the many institutions that have endured and pays homage to the customs that have been lost or evolved over the decades. From the original campus adjacent to the current state capitol, to the 43 years on Capitol Way, to the dairy farm evolving into a 15-acre complex, now home to William Winlock Miller High School, this work is the most comprehensive study of the history of Olympia High School to date.

Book Fighting for Common Ground

Download or read book Fighting for Common Ground written by Olympia Snowe and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outspoken centrist, Senator Snowe stunned Washington in February 2012 when she announced she would not seek a fourth term and offered a sharp rebuke to the Senate, citing the dispiriting gridlock and polarization. After serving in the legislative branch at the state and federal levels for 40 years, including 18 years in the U.S. Senate, she explained that Washington wasn’t solving the big problems anymore. In this timely call to action, she explores the roots of her belief in principled policy-making and bipartisan compromise. A leading moderate with a reputation for crossing the aisle, Senator Snowe will propose solutions for bridging the partisan divide in Washington, most notably through a citizens’ movement to hold elected officials accountable. Senator Snowe recounts how the tragedies and triumphs of her personal story helped shape her political approach. Born in Augusta, Maine, Senator Snowe was orphaned at nine, and raised by an aunt and uncle. When she was twenty-six, her husband, a Maine state representative, was killed in an auto accident. Already dedicated to public service, she ran for and won her husband’s seat. The book will include anecdotes from throughout her career, and address her working relationships with Presidents Reagan through Obama, Senator Ted Kennedy, Majority Leader Bob Dole, and many others. As a senior member of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, the high-profile Commerce and Intelligence Committees, and the Senate Small Business Committee, Senator Snowe has been directly involved with the most talked-about legislative challenges of recent decades: the country’s response to 9/11; the 2008 financial crisis; the Affordable Healthcare Act; the debt ceiling debacle, and much more. Her new book will draw on the lessons she's learned as a policymaker, and the frustration she shares with the American people about the government’s dwindling productivity. Senator Snowe passionately argues that the government has now lost its way, shows how this happened, and proposes ways for the world’s greatest deliberative body to, once again, fulfill its mission.

Book excerpt: Located on the southernmost point of Puget Sound, the Olympia area was occupied by the Coastal Salish Indians for many generations before American settlers established a town site there in 1846. First the provisional territorial capital in 1853, incorporated as a town in 1859, it then became the permanent state capital when Washington attained statehood in 1889. The town was named for the majestic Olympic Mountains, visible on a clear day. The town's history and landmarks, including the capitol building, the waterfront, the downtown businesses, and the Olympia brewery, as well as the surrounding areas, were all visually documented by the picture postcard, which gained widespread popularity at the beginning of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of opportunity drew twenty-seven-year-old Illinois schoolteacher William Winlock Miller west to the future Washington Territory in 1850. Like so many other Oregon Trail emigrants Miller arrived cash-poor and ambitious, but unlike most he fulfilled his grandest ambitions. By the time of his death in 1876, Miller had amassed one of the largest private fortunes in the territory and had used it creatively in developing the region’s assets, leaving a significant mark on the territory’s political and economic history. Appointed Surveyor of Customs at the newly created Port of Nisqually in 1851, Miller was the first federal official north of the Columbia River. Two years later he helped organize the new territory‘s Democratic Party and quickly became a political and financial confidant of governor Isaac Stevens. His involvement in the Indian conflict in 1855–56, a term in the territorial legislature, and his bankrolling of key politicians made him the territory’s most effective political networker. His role as a “hip-pocket banker” in a region without established banks made him a powerful financial broker and a major player in territorial affairs. But in his pursuit of success Miller compromised another ambition he carried west from Illinois. He postponed marriage and family until only a few years before his death and agonized about relationships with his family in Illinois. His experience reminds us that the pioneer settlement era was a period of social dislocation and that public economic and political success could mask personal disappointment. Lang’s biography takes readers into the heart of Washington territorial politics, where alliances often hinged more on mutual economic interest than political principles and nearly all agreed that government should encourage ambitious and energetic men. In this world, Lang argues, Miller succeeded because he parlayed his talents in camaraderie politics and sharp-pencil business affairs with an unabashed mining of governmental opportunities. William Lang’s account of William Winlock Miller and the first quarter century of Washington’s history offers a new view of the pioneer era, emphasizing that the West was developed in large measure by men like Miller who manipulated government and its resources to their own and the region’s advantage.

Book excerpt: "My name is Arthur Pendragon, and I am a legend. The story of my existence has been retold for ages upon ages, each tale becoming a little more peculiar, a little more personal to its narrator. However, I believe that each individual has their story, and it is their duty to tell it. Sadly, I have seldom been given the opportunity to tell my own story. A biography is for those who have made history. An autobiography is for those not known. This is my legend, and I want to be the one to tell it. I want the world to know the truth. I want the world to understand the events that happened with the sword in the stone. I want them to know how I truly met Merlin, as a young boy, and not as the old man. I want them to feel how my heart was broken by the lady of the lake. I want them to sympathize with the unglamorous actuality of the war I fought. I want them to know about America. And lastly, I want them to see the world the way I see it, through my eyes. But that is only If I Could Tell It."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help students discern fact from fiction in the information they access not only at school but in the devices they carry in their pockets and backpacks. The advent of the 24-hour news cycle, citizen journalism and an increased reliance on social media as a trusted news source have had a profound effect not only on how we get our news, but also on how we evaluate sources of information, share that information and interact with others in online communities. When these issues are coupled with the “fake news” industry that intentionally spreads false stories designed to go viral, educators are left facing a new and challenging landscape. This book will help them address these new realities, providing strategies and support to help students develop the skills needed to effectively evaluate information they encounter online. The book includes: • Instructional strategies for combating fake news, including models for evaluating news stories with links to resources on how to include lessons on fake news in your curricula. • Examples from prominent educators who demonstrate how to tackle fake news with students and colleagues. • A fake news self-assessment with a digital component to help readers evaluate their skills in detecting and managing fake news. • A downloadable infographic with mobile media literacy tips. The companion jump start guide based on this book is Fighting Fake News: Tools and Strategies for Teaching Media Literacy.
