Download or read book A Journey Within written by Olivia Fraser and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Journey Within documents Olivia Fraser's acclaimed paintings over the last decade, which reflect her remarkable inner quest towards elaboration by simplification. Following her induction into Indian miniature painting in a traditional Jaipur atelier, Fraser's focus shifted from painting the world around her to depicting a landscape more metaphysical in nature. Trained by her Jaipuri gurus, she learned to grind and mix mineral pigments to their correct consistency. She is especially influenced by Nathdwara pichwai paintings and early nineteenth-century Jodpuri Mansingh-period imagery, produced by the Nath yogis, whose visual language reaches back to an archetypal iconography rooted in India's deepest and most philosophical artistic heritage -- complex abstract thoughts captured in seemingly simple visual language. The work Fraser has produced inspired by these twin muses is nevertheless profoundly contemporary, breaching both temporal and geographical borders, emerging as it does from her twin life between East and West.

Book Faces and Places of IUPUI

Download or read book Faces and Places of IUPUI written by Cassidy Hunter and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Faces and Places of IUPUI: Fifty Years in Indianapolis presents the story of the Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis campus in a new and unique way. With a focus on the "Fifty Faces of IUPUI," a select group of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members chosen by the campus, readers will learn how the campus developed out of the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1903 to become Indiana's premier urban public research university. From remarkable figures from the past such as Joseph T. Taylor, who grew up in the Jim Crow South and later became the Founding Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, to current undergraduates from a multitude of backgrounds and studying a range of disciplines, Faces and Places of IUPUI recounts the fascinating people who help make IUPUI a national and international leader in education and research. Using a combination of archival and contemporary photography, Faces and Places of IUPUI captures these stories and weaves them together to represent the university's evolution. By adopting strength-based educational discourse, contributors to Education Transformation in Muslim Societies reveal how critical the whole-person approach is when enriching the brain and the spirit and instilling hope back into the teaching and learning spaces of many Muslim societies and communities.

When Vic Singh finds a dead blue butterfly—out of place in his cold, upstate New York village—he knows something is terribly amiss. Yet he is too busy dodging the bully at his high school, let alone trying to live up to his father’s expectations, to look much further into the environmental oddities around him. Meanwhile, for Vic’s father, Paul, the ghosts of the past cause him to pressure his son to live up to his Sikh traditions—while his Latvian wife, Maija, is haunted by the present: She’s having new and ominous psychic visions even though she can’t read her own teenage children. Isabella, attempting to lose herself through her role in a school play, has an illness she can't seem to shake—and Vic, trying to find himself, is spending more time alone in nature. Then Paul’s father and Maija’s mother move in to the family home, upending the delicate balance of this Indian/Latvian family and its two American teenagers. Yet, as the environmental devastation that Vic’s butterflies have forewarned comes to bear, the family comes together in new and unexpected ways. Olivia Chadha’s lovely, multilayered novel brings us into an extended family of three generations that strives to remain together in an unstable world.

Book Colonial India in Children s Literature

Download or read book Colonial India in Children s Literature written by Supriya Goswami and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial India in Children’s Literature is the first book-length study to explore the intersections of children’s literature and defining historical moments in colonial India. Engaging with important theoretical and critical literature that deals with colonialism, hegemony, and marginalization in children's literature, Goswami proposes that British, Anglo-Indian, and Bengali children’s literature respond to five key historical events: the missionary debates preceding the Charter Act of 1813, the defeat of Tipu Sultan, the Mutiny of 1857, the birth of Indian nationalism, and the Swadeshi movement resulting from the Partition of Bengal in 1905. Through a study of works by Mary Sherwood (1775-1851), Barbara Hofland (1770-1844), Sara Jeanette Duncan (1861-1922), Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), Upendrakishore Ray (1863-1915), and Sukumar Ray (1887-1923), Goswami examines how children’s literature negotiates and represents these momentous historical forces that unsettled Britain’s imperial ambitions in India. Goswami argues that nineteenth-century British and Anglo-Indian children’s texts reflect two distinct moods in Britain’s colonial enterprise in India. Sherwood and Hofland (writing before 1857) use the tropes of conversion and captivity as a means of awakening children to the dangers of India, whereas Duncan and Kipling shift the emphasis to martial prowess, adaptability, and empirical knowledge as defining qualities in British and Anglo-Indian children. Furthermore, Goswami’s analysis of early nineteenth-century children’s texts written by women authors redresses the preoccupation with male authors and boys’ adventure stories that have largely informed discussions of juvenility in the context of colonial India. This groundbreaking book also seeks to open up the canon by examining early twentieth-century Bengali children’s texts that not only draw literary inspiration from nineteenth-century British children’s literature, but whose themes are equally shaped by empire.
