As a young boy, Kevin is pulled toward a mysterious used bookstore that only he seems able to see. He enters and meets an eccentric sales clerk who gives him the diary of a man named Oliver Lee. The boy takes the book home and reads of the old man’s lifelong search for a couple he has never met, as well as his journey through the lives of the fantastic and the ordinary to find and save their lives. After he finishes reading the diary, the boy races back to the bookstore, but finds that it is now empty. Begin the chronicle and understand the mystery, the lies, and the truth of Oliver Lee in this unforgettable, puzzling fantasy novel, which is the first book in the Liturian trilogy.

Book excerpt: One of the astonishing aspects of [Oliver's] work is the consistency of tone over this long period. What changes is an increased focus on nature and an increased precision with language that has made her one of our very best poets. . . . These poems sustain us rather than divert us. Although few poets have fewer human beings in their poems than Mary Oliver, it is ironic that few poets also go so far to help us forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, a great fiction book of 19th century, here is the beginning; AMONG other public buildings in a certain town which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, it boasts of one which is common to most towns, great or small, to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born, on a day and date which I need not take upon myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events, the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter. For a long time after he was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all; in which case it is somewhat more than probable that these memoirs would never have appeared, or, if they had, being comprised within a couple of pages, that they would have possessed the inestimable merit of being the most concise and faithful specimen of biography extant in the literature of any age or country

  • Release : 2011-03-04
  • ISBN : 0307365751
  • Pages : 247 pages

Book excerpt: Like The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, this is a fascinating voyage into a strange and wonderful land, a provocative meditation on communication, biology, adaptation, and culture. In Seeing Voices, Oliver Sacks turns his attention to the subject of deafness, and the result is a deeply felt portrait of a minority struggling for recognition and respect — a minority with its own rich, sometimes astonishing, culture and unique visual language, an extraordinary mode of communication that tells us much about the basis of language in hearing people as well. Seeing Voices is, as Studs Terkel has written, "an exquisite, as well as revelatory, work."

Book Conversation with the Blues CD Included

Download or read book Conversation with the Blues CD Included written by Paul Oliver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1965 by Cassell and Co, this classic and unique text in blues history, Conversation with the Blues has now been re-issued in a new, larger format. The book takes a slice across blues traditions of all kinds, which were still thriving side by side in 1960. Compiled from transcriptions of interviews with blues singers made by Paul Oliver in 1960, the book tells in the singers' own words of the significance of their music and the turbulent lives it reflects. It is accompanied by a fascinating CD, slipcased on the inside back cover of the book, which captures the stark, ironic but moving narratives of the singers themselves. Included are guitarists, pianists and other instrumentalists from the rural South and the urban North, from famous blues singers who recorded extensively to singers known only to their local communities. Copiously illustrated with Paul Oliver's photographs, the book provides a rare glimpse of African American music at a time when the South was still segregated.

Book The People of the Sea

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul D'Arcy
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2006-03-31
  • ISBN : 0824846389
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book The People of the Sea written by Paul D'Arcy and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceania is characterized by thousands of islands and archipelagoes amidst the vast expanse of the Pacific. Although it is one of the few truly oceanic habitats occupied permanently by humankind, surprisingly little research has been done on the maritime dimension of Pacific history. The People of the Sea attempts to fill this gap by combining neglected historical and scientific material to provide the first synthetic study of ocean-people interaction in the region from 1770 to 1870. It emphasizes Pacific Islanders' varied and evolving relationships with the sea during a crucial transitional era following sustained European contact. Countering the dominant paradigms of recent Pacific Islands' historiography, which tend to limit understanding of the sea's importance, this volume emphasizes the flux in the maritime environment and how it instilled an expectation and openness toward outside influences and the rapidity with which cultural change could occur in relations between various Islander groups. The author constructs an extended and detailed conceptual framework to examine the ways in which the sea has framed and shaped Islander societies. He looks closely at Islanders' diverse responses to their ocean environment, including the sea in daily life; sea travel and its infrastructure; maritime boundaries; protecting and contesting marine tenure; attitudes to unheralded seaborne arrivals; and conceptions of the world beyond the horizon and the willingness to voyage. He concludes by using this framework to reconsider the influence of the sea on historical processes in Oceania from 1770 to the present and discusses the implications of his findings for Pacific studies.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A “wonderful memoir” (Los Angeles Times) about a brilliantly unconventional physician and writer, a man who has illuminated the many ways that the brain makes us human. • “Intimate.... Brim[s] with life and affection.” —The New York Times When Oliver Sacks was twelve years old, a perceptive schoolmaster wrote: “Sacks will go far, if he does not go too far.” It is now abundantly clear that Sacks has never stopped going. With unbridled honesty and humor, Sacks writes about the passions that have driven his life—from motorcycles and weight lifting to neurology and poetry. He writes about his love affairs, both romantic and intellectual; his guilt over leaving his family to come to America; his bond with his schizophrenic brother; and the writers and scientists—W. H. Auden, Gerald M. Edelman, Francis Crick—who have influenced his work.
