Book excerpt: The stunning memoir of a Muslim teen struggling to survive in the midst of the Bosnian genocide--and the stray cat who protected her family through it all. *Six Starred Reviews* A YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist A Capitol Choices Remarkable Book A Mighty Girl Best Book A Malala Fund Favorite Book Selection In 1992, Amra was a teen in Bihac, Bosnia, when her best friend said they couldn't speak anymore. Her friend didn't say why, but Amra knew the reason: Amra was Muslim. It was the first sign her world was changing. Then Muslim refugees from other Bosnian cities started arriving, fleeing Serbian persecution. When the tanks rolled into Bihac, bringing her own city under seige, Amra's happy life in her peaceful city vanished. But there is light even in the darkest of times, and she discovered that light in the warm, bonfire eyes of a stray cat. The little calico had followed the refugees into the city and lost her own family. At first, Amra doesn't want to bother with a stray; her family doesn't have the money to keep a pet. But with gentle charm this kitty finds her way into everyone's heart, and after a few near miracles when she seems to save the family, how could they turn her away? Here is the stunning true story of a teen who, even in the brutality of war, never wavered in her determination to obtain an education, maintain friendships, and even find a first love-and the cat who gave comfort, hope, and maybe even served as the family's guardian spirit.

Book excerpt: “Much like Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, M. L. Rio’s sparkling debut is a richly layered story of love, friendship, and obsession...will keep you riveted through its final, electrifying moments.” —Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, New York Times bestselling author of The Nest "Nerdily (and winningly) in love with Shakespeare...Readable, smart.” —New York Times Book Review On the day Oliver Marks is released from jail, the man who put him there is waiting at the door. Detective Colborne wants to know the truth, and after ten years, Oliver is finally ready to tell it. A decade ago: Oliver is one of seven young Shakespearean actors at Dellecher Classical Conservatory, a place of keen ambition and fierce competition. In this secluded world of firelight and leather-bound books, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingénue, extras. But in their fourth and final year, good-natured rivalries turn ugly, and on opening night real violence invades the students’ world of make-believe. In the morning, the fourth-years find themselves facing their very own tragedy, and their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, each other, and themselves that they are innocent. If We Were Villains was named one of Bustle's Best Thriller Novels of the Year, and Mystery Scene says, "A well-written and gripping ode to the stage...A fascinating, unorthodox take on rivalry, friendship, and truth."

Book On Earth as It Is on Television

Download or read book On Earth as It Is on Television written by Emily Jane and published by Disney Electronic Content. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Emily Jane’s rollicking debut, when spaceships arrive and then depart suddenly without a word, the certainty that we are not alone in the universe turns to intense uncertainty as to our place within it. “Weird and sweet ... like a 2020s White Noise: loud and colorful Americana with a sprinkle of apocalyptic doom.”—Edgar Cantero “Heartfelt, witty, and secretly romantic ... a delightful and poignant story about what it is to be human, and what we owe each other.” —Christina Lauren Since long before the spaceships’ fleeting presence, Blaine has been content to go along with the whims of his supermom wife and half-feral, television-addicted children. But when the kids blithely ponder skinning people to see if they’re aliens, and his wife drags them all on a surprise road trip to Disney World, even steady Blaine begins to crack. Half a continent away, Heather floats in a Malibu pool and watches the massive ships hover overhead. Maybe her life is finally going to start. For her, the arrival heralds a quest to understand herself, her accomplished (and oh-so-annoying) stepfamily, and why she feels so alone in a universe teeming with life. Suddenly conscious and alert after twenty catatonic years, Oliver struggles to piece together his fragmented, disco-infused memories and make sense of his desire to follow a strange cat on a westward journey. Embracing the strangeness that is life in the twenty-first century, On Earth as It Is on Television is a rollicking, heartfelt tale of first contact that practically leaps off the planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Yvonne Wilson, an accountant, and Oliver, a grossly overweight black-and-white tuxedo cat. Yvonne witnesses an execution-style murder of three people. Even with limited police protection and the promise of being put in the witness protection program, Yvonne fully realizes that MS-13 gang members or the mob are going to kill her. The mob has hired MS-13 gang members to expedite the matter. After believing that she is in a hopeless dilemma, Yvonne notices a huge black-and-white tuxedo cat that has just appeared in her living room. He is a talking cat named Oliver. Oliver explains that he was sent from heaven to protect Yvonne from the MS-13 gang members and the mob. He assures her that the mob/MS-13 cannot harm her. He will protect her until she dies a natural death. Yvonne soon realizes that Oliver can back up what he says. He has supernatural powers. He is omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (can be in more than one place at the same time), and clairvoyant (can see into the future). Oliver is here for the duration. He will never leave her. After a while, Yvonne and Oliver grow on each other. They become inseparable. The story is full of love, and there is a human and feline bonding. Yvonne often shoots it out with MS-13 gang members and mobsters. Although close to a deity, Oliver does have some faults. He is always on a thin line between being a law officer and an outlaw. After he becomes an FBI agent, he takes some of his salary and donates the rest to charity. When he is short of cash, he prints $100 bills in Yvonne's basement. Since the bills are real, he can't be accused of counterfeiting.
