Book Old World Hero Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old World Hero Stories Classic Reprint written by Eva March Tappan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-17 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old World Hero Stories IT is not so many years since the school history was practi cally a dry chronicle of discoveries, settlements, and wars. A narrative that was in any degree personal and anecdotal was gazed upon askance as being necessarily unscholarly and undignified. Discoveries and settlements and wars there must be, and accounts of them must be written and made familiar; but the one and only way to bring past issues into the life of a child with any vividness is first to interest him in the actors themselves. Carlyle says that history is at bot tom the history of the great men who have worked here. There is no better introduction to the study of the Augustan Age than the story of the life of Augustus; no better way to arouse interest in the philosophy of Plato and Socrates than the tales of their lives. Book Half a Hundred Hero Tales of Ulysses and the Men of Old Classic Reprint

Download or read book Half a Hundred Hero Tales of Ulysses and the Men of Old Classic Reprint written by Francis Storr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half a Hundred Hero Tales of Ulysses and the Men of Old Some of the contributors have followed closely the texts, others have given free play to their fancy, but in every case the myths have been treated simply as stories and no attempt has been made either to trace their origin or to indicate their religious or ethical significance. Most of the stories point their own moral, and need no more commentary than Jack the Giant-killer or the Sleeping Beauty. Young readers of to-day resent the sermons even of a Kingsley. From "Tanglewood Tales," a book that was the joy of our childhood, we have borrowed ten stories, and have taken the liberty of dividing into chapters and slightly abridging the longest of Hawthorne's Tales. All but one of the remaining forty are original versions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Tales of the Far North When a man knocks at Uncle Sam's gate, craving admission to his house, we ask him how much money he brings, lest he become a hindrance instead of a help. If now we were to ask what he brings, not only in his pocket, but in his mind and in his heart, this stranger, what ideals he owns, what company he kept in the country he left that shaped his hopes and ambitions, might it not, if the answer were right, be a help to a better mutual understand ing between host and guest? For the May flower did not hold all who in this world have battled for freedom of home, of hope, and of conscience. The struggle ls bigger than that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes Every Child Should Know: Tales for Young People of All the World's Heroes in All Ages They had worked and thought and dreamed only a little time before they began to explain the marvelous earth on which they found themselves and the strange things that happened in it; the vastness and beauty of the fields, woods, sky and sea, the force of the wind, the com ing and going of the day and night, the warmth of sum mer when everything grew, and the cold of winter when everything died, the rush of the storm and the terrible brightness Of the lightning. They had no idea of what we call law or force; they could not think of anything being moved or any noise being made unless there was some one like themselves to move things and make sounds; and so they made stories of gods and giants and heroes and nymphs and fawns; and the myths, which are poetic explanations of the world and of the life of men in it, came into being. Book Stories of the Old World Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of the Old World Classic Reprint written by Alfred John Church and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Old World The son of Cretheus, AEson, bequeathed the kingdom of Thessaly to his brother Pelias, to keep for Jason, his son, whom he had sent to be taught by Chiron, the wise Centaur. Now when Jason was returning from Chiron he came to Anaurus, which is a river of Thessaly, and would have crossed it; but there was an old woman on the river bank, and she entreated of Jason that he would carry her over the river, for she feared herself, she said, to cross it. But the old woman was in truth the goddess Here, who had taken upon herself the likeness of an old woman to try the young man's heart. Jason therefore carried her over, but in crossing he lost one of his sandals, for it cleaved to the sand that was in the river; and so he came to the dwelling of King Pelias, where they were preparing a great sacrifice and feast to Poseidon and the other gods. Now there had come an oracle aforetime to Pelias, saying, "Beware of him who shall come to thee with one sandal only, for it is thy doom to die by his means." Therefore, when Pelias saw Jason come in this plight, he was afraid; also he would fain keep the kingdom for himself. The waters of the lake, which is twenty miles in circumference, were burnished by the setting sun. The surrounding plains were as green as an English meadow, and beautiful forest-trees bordered the extreme boundaries of the plains, like giant warders of the adjoining jungle, Long promontaries, densely wooded, stretched far into the waters of the lake, forming sheltered nooks and bays teeming with wild-fowl. The deer browsed in herds on the wide extent of plain, or lay beneath the shade Of spreading branches. In some spots, groves of trees grew to the very water's edge in others, the wide plains, free from a Single Stem or bush, stretched for miles on the edge ofthe lake thickly-wooded hills bordered the extreme end of its waters, and distant blue mountains mingled their dim summits with the clouds. Book The Bride s Hero Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bride s Hero Classic Reprint written by M. P. Revere and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bride's Hero Both volumes are here in my writing-desk. I was looking them over a little before beginning this. I never called my book a diary; one hears so much fun being made of girls who keep diaries. But then, most girls have some one to whom they can go and tell their troubles, or the fun they have, or to ask advice. I have nobody at all, for any one who knows Aunt Dora would know I could n't say things I really care for in my heart to her. My first volume I called Letters to my Darling Mother. I wonder what Aunt Dora would say if she saw that inscription? She would think something was very wrong with my head. Oh, how glad I am she '11 never know about my books! How glad I am that I shan't really have to hear her say anything about them! For it's hopeless arguing with Aunt Dora. You begin a subject, and she snaps you up with a snubby sort of answer that finishes the matter and you at the same time, making you feel a Worm. Only, of course, she hardly ever does it to Marguerite, or to new acquaintances; only to people she is tired of, and impatient with, like me. I used to feel, somehow, as if my mother might come back and read those letters of mine to her, maybe while I was asleep. I used always to imagine myself asking her advice about things, and then I 'd dream that she told me what I ought to do, or comforted me when I was miserable. I never had time to know my mother very well, or she me, in this world because she died before I was three. But sometimes, m flashes, it seems as if I an remember her. I distinctly see a beautiful young face, close to mine, bending over me when I 'm in bed. It is a small oval face, without much color, and it has a sweet, curved mouth, the upper lip shaped like a how. The eyes are gray, the color of slate, with golden brown spots round the pupils; and they look at me from under long, dark lashes that curl up softly. I can see her little, delicate nose, with sensitive nostrils, and her brown hair parted in the middle, and spraying into what I like to call love locks over her forehead. It 's a pretty word, and one finds it in poetry or old fashioned stories about sweet heroines of other times; so it seems to suit my mother, for I think of her as being rather old-fashioned, or, anyhow, not hard and brilliant like the mothers of a great many girls I know especially not at all like Aunt Dora, who says I am old-fashioned.
