Book excerpt: In 1939, Columbia Pictures based a film on Clarence Kelland's book Arizona, set during the Civil War in Arizona Territory. To accurately portray the novel's landscape, Columbia selected a spot about 10 miles from what is now downtown Tucson in the middle of a large Pima County park for the filming. In 1959, Bob Shelton, a Kansas City developer, purchased the lot, determined to build an active movie studio and tourist attraction. His vision was successful, and Old Tucson Studios has set the stage for over 200 movies and television shows. Book excerpt: Once considered the "Metropolis of Arizona," Tucson is in many respects a college town with a major military base onto which a retirement community has been grafted. A sprawling city of one million in the Sonoran Desert, Tucson was developed during and especially for the second half of the 20th century, a reality which has left it possibly unprepared for the challenges of the 21st century. Tracing the remarkable history of Tucson since 1854, this book describes many aspects of the community--its ceremonies and customs, its early bitter battle to secure the University of Arizona, its multitude of problems, its noteworthy successes and its racial divides. The recollections of those who have made Tucson such a memorable place are included, from political leaders to celebrities to ordinary residents.

Book excerpt: Tucson attracts six million visitors every year. Whether they come for the sights or the sunshine--although most come for both--they'll find that this handy guide can help make their visit more enjoyable. Discovering Tucson covers all of the top tourist attractions that bring people to the Old Pueblo, from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Old Tucson Studios to San Xavier Mission and the Biosphere 2 Center. It can also alert travel planners to make time for stops they may not have known about, such as the Pima Air and Space Museum or Colossal Cave. Tucson is one of only fourteen U.S. cities boasting resident symphony, theater, ballet, and opera companies, and Discovering Tucson guides readers to all of these--as well as to the city's most popular western clubs and nightspots. Outdoor enthusiasts will find where to ride a horse, take a hike, or putt their stuff on one of the city's championship golf courses. An additional section on day trips invites visitors to discover nearby ghost towns and natural wonders, or spend a day shopping across the Mexican border. More than a guide to attractions, Discovering Tucson also points out some of the best places to eat and stay--along with some of the most popular shopping stops, whether for Indian arts or cowboy boots. With so much to see and do, it's no wonder so many people come to Tucson--and there's no question this book will help them plan and enjoy their visit all the more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Tucson: A Hop, Skip and Jump History From 1539 Indian Settlement to New and Greater Tucson That our present modern city, under various appellations of Tuquelson, Tuqueston and Tucson (sometimes spelled Tuczon, Tuigson or Tuyson) was for many centuries an old Indian village there can be no doubt, for more than a quarter of a century before the Spaniards founded San Augustine, Alvar Nunez, with two other Span iards, and a negro, Estevan or Estevancio, had in the course of their wanderings set foot on Arizona soil, and finally landing at Culiacan, in Sinaloa, Mexico, so wrought upon the ambitions of the peo ple, concerning the seven cities of Cibola (moqui and Zuni villages) both for material gain, and the conversion of the natives, that an adventurous pio neer, Padre Marcos de Niza, determmed to satisfy himself as to their truth or falsity - so early in 1539 the good Father, with a few followers, and guided by Estevan, the Arabian negro who later came to grief, set out in search of the seven cities. They passed through the country of the Pimas, down the valley of the Santa Cruz, by the present site of Tucson, thence across to the Pima settlements on the Gila. Tucson is a Pima word, and they pronounced it Chook Son, and its meaning is said to be Black Creek. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Tucson Mountains are located several miles west of downtown Tucson. For thousands of years, this mountain range has been inhabited, explored, and traveled by Native Americans who settled near the Santa Cruz River. Homesteaders, prospectors, and ranchers arrived in the late 19th century, drawn by the area's close proximity to Tucson and the Southern Pacific Railroad, as well as the promise of land and mineral wealth. During the past 100 years, conservation efforts to preserve and enhance the community's understanding of this geologic treasure have led to the establishment of museums and parks, including Tucson Mountain Park, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Saguaro National Park West. Old Tucson Studios has used the surrounding Tucson Mountains as a movie backdrop for more than 70 years. The White Stallion Ranch and the J. W. Marriot at Starr Pass make the Tucson Mountains a popular destination for visitors who want to experience the rugged beauty and character of the American Southwest.

Download or read book Tucson Arizona written by Jane Eppinga and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Tucson and its people is long and distinguished. Archaeological records demonstrate that Tucson was inhabited from about 300 to 1300 A.D. by a people called the Hohokam. Through the centuries the flags of Spain, Mexico, the Confederacy, and the United States have flown over Tucson. Images of cowboys and Indians, preachers and gamblers, miners and gunslingers, ladies of the night and churchmen, leave an indelible imprint on the history of this town. From remote Spanish presidio outpost, to Mexican village, to modern metropolis, Tucson has endured. After Mexico's revolution against Spain in 1821, Tucson became part of Mexico. With the 1853 Gadsden Purchase, Tucson joined the United States as part of the Arizona Territory, achieving statehood in 1912. After California's gold rush, many disappointed prospectors (the famous "49ers") stopped and stayed in Tucson. The expansion of the railroad brought many more immigrants. After World War One, many veterans with tuberculosis sought relief in Tucson's warm dry climate. After World War Two, veterans remembered their training during warm winters and moved to Tucson permanently.

Book excerpt: Tucson is a history of time and a river. The roots of prehistoric habitation run deep along the Santa Cruz River, reaching back thousands of years. Later the river attracted 17th-century Spanish explorers, who brought military government, the church, and colonists to establish the northern outpost of their New World empire. Later still, American westward expansion drew new settlers to the place called Tucson. Today Tucson is a bustling multicultural community of more than one million residents. These images from the photographic archives of the Arizona Historical Society tell the stories of individuals and cultures that transformed a 19th-century frontier village into a 20th-century desert city.
