This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative approach to the character of the intellectual life of Catholics in Scotland. It looks at Catholic attempts to fight the appeal of communism amongst the working classes in interwar Scotland, it analyses developments in the devotional life of Scottish Catholics and it discusses the unique theological contribution made by Scottish clerics. Chapters also explore the increasing presence of Catholics in Scotland in higher education and their role in shaping change within the Catholic Church. Finally, readers will have the opportunity to learn more about the previously under-researched Catholic Intelligentsia, and the debate within it on the place of Catholicism in the history of Scotland. The History of Catholic Intellectual Life in Scotland, 1918–1965 presents the domestic context of the changing character of Scottish Catholicism, as well as the context of changes in European Catholicism.

Book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths in Glasgow

Download or read book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths in Glasgow written by Paul Harrison and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-21 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The criminal cases vividly described by Paul Harrison in this gripping book take the reader on a journey into the dark secret side of Glasgow's long history. The city has been the setting for a series of horrific, bloody, sometimes bizarre incidents over the centuries. From crimes of brutal premeditation to those born of rage or despair, the whole range of human weakness and wickedness is represented here. There are tales of secret passion and betrayal, robbery, murder, gangland violence, executions, and instances of domestic cruelty and malice that ended in death. Among the fascinating and varied selection of cases Paul Harrison covers are an IRA ambush and gun battle, the policeman who murdered his lover, a Wild West-style shootout between police and a desperate robber, a sequence of horrendous serial murders including the case of Bible John, and the extraordinary acquittal of John Mitchell Henderson. The human dramas the author describes are often played out in the most commonplace of circumstances, but others are so odd as to be stranger than fiction. This grisly chronicle of the hidden history of Glasgow will be compelling reading for anyone who is interested in the dark side of human nature.

Book Glasgow s Black Heart

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Skelton

Download or read book Glasgow s Black Heart written by Douglas Skelton and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. It is a city of culture, of impressive architecture, enterprise and endeavour, and is one of warm-hearted, generous people. But it also has a dark side. Beneath the busy streets, the Victorian sandstone and urban trendiness lies a black heart that beats in rhythm with the roar of the traffic and the echo of footsteps on concrete. It is a black heart pumped by greed and lust, violence and murder. And it has beaten since the city first sprang up on that dear, green place on the banks of the Molendinar Burn. This is the epic story of Glasgow crime. Beginning in 1624 when the Tolbooth was built at Glasgow Cross to house the courts and town jail, author Douglas Skelton covers four centuries of Glasgow's hidden history, tracing the formation of the first paid police force in Britain, the Black Assizes of the circuit court and the formation of the city's own High Court of Justiciary. Here you will find the pimps and pushers, gangsters and gangleaders, rioters and robbers who flooded the veins of the city. Famous felons rub shoulders with their less notorious, but equally vicious, counterparts. Here also are the thief-takers, cops, lawyers and judges who tried to stem the gushing flow, some with more success than others. These stories may not be what the City Fathers would like to see on Glasgow's CV, but they are as much a part of its traditions and its legacy as the fish, the bell and the tree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The bombing of Guernica, 80 years ago, inspired one of Picasso’s best-known works. Now, visitors to this iconic part of Spain’s Basque Country will discover a town devoted to peace and reconciliation. It is also about using art as a form of protest to encourage change and make people think objectively, rather than react irrationally.” James Gerard The novel is about family, friendships, war, peace, history, hope, endurance and ultimately reconciliation. It is about stopping for a moment and seeing the world from another person’s point of view in different times, cultures, and environments. The first part of the book centres around two small, yet significant villages, Scotstoun, Glasgow and Guernica in the Basque region, northern Spain. Set before, during and after WW2, it should be noted that two of the main characters include a doctor and nurse at a time when there was no NHS. The second part of the book focuses· on a Peace Centre set up in a flat in Scotstoun called Haizean (Basque for in the wind), where students come from all over the world to share ideas. Imagine living in enforced exile for nearly forty years of your life. Add to that the lack of any of your fellow-countrymen within a thousand miles. Asier was a doctor living in Guernica back in 1937 alongside his wife and two children when the German bombers arrived. He has to assume that his family have all perished. Arriving in Glasgow, thanks to the efforts of John Oswald, a Scottish journalist, Asier carries on his work as a doctor. Asier’s diaries afford some insight into his coming to terms with separation from his homeland, namely the Basque region in the North of Spain. But more than this, they chronicle key events leading up to, during and after World War II.
