Smith, and of Welsh descent.[1][2] Kate herself experienced a happy childhood, even though it was coloured by the American Civil War and her father's death. Kate and her sister Nora were still quite young when their widowed mother moved her little family from Philadelphia to Portland, Maine, then, three years later, upon her remarriage, to the little village of Hollis. There Kate matured in rural surroundings, with her sister and her new baby brother, Philip.

Book excerpt: The Old Peabody Pew is written by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The story begins with the Dorcas Society, being female and possessed of notions regarding comfort and beauty, generally disapproved of making any impious alterations in a tabernacle, chapel, temple, or other building used for worship. This sentiment had been maintained for a quarter of a century but was especially strong in the old Tory Hill Meeting House. Every pew in the old Meeting House was scrubbed by members of the Ladies' Christian Temperance Society. "When men lose their wives, they lose their wits," said the Widow Buzzell. "If there's anything duller than cookin' three meals a day for yourself, and eatin' them by yourself, I'd like to know it!". A bird without a song stood in for Nancy Peabody's love each year. Since that gloomy day in November when Justin said goodbye, the months had seemingly never ended. If she had openly pledged to him, she could have waited twice ten years.

Book excerpt: The Old Peabody Pew by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin CHAPTER I Edgewood, like all the other villages along the banks of the Saco, is full of sunny slopes and leafy hollows. There are little, rounded, green-clad hillocks that might, like their scriptural sisters, "skip with joy," and there are grand, rocky hills tufted with gaunt pine trees-these leading the eye to the splendid heights of a neighbour State, where snow-crowned peaks tower in the blue distance, sweeping the horizon in a long line of majesty. Tory Hill holds its own among the others for peaceful beauty and fair prospect, and on its broad, level summit sits the white-painted Orthodox Meeting-House. This faces a grassy common where six roads meet, as if the early settlers had determined that no one should lack salvation because of a difficulty in reaching its visible source. The old church has had a dignified and fruitful past, dating from that day in 1761 when young Paul Coffin received his call to preach at a stipend of fifty pounds sterling a year; answering "that never having heard of any Uneasiness among the people about his Doctrine or manner of life, he declared himself pleased to Settle as Soon as might be Judged Convenient." Book excerpt: "The Old Peabody Pew" is a novella written by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin, an American author known for her works in children's literature. The book was first published in 1907 and is considered a classic of American literature. Unlike her more famous work, "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm," this novella is more of a reflective and nostalgic piece rather than a children's story. The story is set in a New England village and is narrated by the church pew itself, which has witnessed generations of congregants. The Old Peabody Pew has been a silent observer of the community's joys, sorrows, and spiritual experiences. As it recounts its long history, it offers a glimpse into the lives of the various people who have occupied it over the years. The central focus of the novella is the romance between two characters, young lovers Theodora and Tilly. Their story unfolds within the context of their experiences at the village church, where the Old Peabody Pew plays a significant role as the place where they sit during services. The pew's perspective allows readers to see how Theodora and Tilly's relationship evolves and how it intertwines with the life of the church and the broader community. Wiggin's narrative in "The Old Peabody Pew" is characterized by its nostalgic and sentimental tone, evoking a sense of the past and the enduring nature of tradition. The novella explores themes of love, faith, community, and the passage of time. It reflects on the changing dynamics of a small-town society and the way people's lives are interconnected within the framework of a church and a shared history. While "The Old Peabody Pew" may not be as well-known as some of Kate Douglas Wiggin's other works, it remains a valuable piece of literature for its evocative storytelling and its ability to capture the essence of a bygone era. It provides a glimpse into the life and culture of a New England village and the enduring power of human connection through the lens of a seemingly ordinary church pew.
