  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Ancestral Images written by Stephanie Moser and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictorial reconstructions of ancient human ancestors have twin purposes: to make sense of shared ancestry and to bring prehistory to life. Stephanie Moser analyzes the close relationship between representations of the past and theories about human evolution, showing how this relationship existed even before a scientific understanding of human origins developed. How did mythological, religious, and historically inspired visions of the past, in existence for centuries, shape this understanding? Moser treats images as primary documents, and her book is lavishly illustrated with engravings, paintings, photographs, and reconstructions. In surveying the iconography of prehistory, Moser explores visions of human creation from their origins in classical, early Christian, and medieval periods through traditions of representation initiated in the Renaissance. She looks closely at the first scientific reconstructions of the nineteenth century, which dramatized and made comprehensible the Darwinian theory of human descent from apes. She considers, as well, the impact of reconstructions on popular literature in Europe and North America, showing that early visualizations of prehistory retained a firm hold on the imagination—a hold that archaeologists and anthropologists have found difficult to shake.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Theatre

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Theatre written by Nicholas Grene and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Theatre provides the single most comprehensive survey of the field to be found in a single volume. Drawing on more than forty contributors from around the world, the book addresses a full range of topics relating to modern Irish theatre from the late nineteenth-century to the most recent works of postdramatic devised theatre. Ireland has long had an importance in the world of theatre out of all proportion to the size of the country, and has been home to four Nobel Laureates (Yeats, Shaw, and Beckett; Seamus Heaney, while primarily a poet, also wrote for the stage). This collection begins with the influence of melodrama, and looks at arguably the first modern Irish playwright, Oscar Wilde, before moving into a series of considerations of the Abbey Theatre, and Irish modernism. Arranged chronologically, it explores areas such as women in theatre, Irish-language theatre, and alternative theatres, before reaching the major writers of more recent Irish theatre, including Brian Friel and Tom Murphy, and their successors. There are also individual chapters focusing on Beckett and Shaw, as well as a series of chapters looking at design, acting, and theatre architecture. The book concludes with an extended survey of the critical literature on the field. In each chapter, the author does not simply rehearse accepted wisdom; all of the contributors push the boundaries of their respective fields, so that each chapter is a significant contribution to scholarship in its own right.

Book The Westford Knight and Henry Sinclair

Download or read book The Westford Knight and Henry Sinclair written by David Goudsward and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Westford Knight is a mysterious, controversial stone carving in Massachusetts. Some believe it is an effigy of a 14th century knight, evidence of an early European visit to the New World by Henry Sinclair, the Earl of Orkney and Lord of Roslin. In 1954, an archaeologist encountered the carving, long known to locals and ascribed a variety of origin stories, and proposed it to be a remnant of the Sinclair expedition. The story of the Westford Knight is a mix of history, archaeology, sociology, and Knights Templar lore. This work unravels the threads of the Knight's history, separating fact from fantasy. This revised edition includes a new foreword and four new chapters which add context to the myth-building that has surrounded the Westford Knight and artifacts like it.

Book The Jewish New Year Festival

Download or read book The Jewish New Year Festival written by Norman H. Snaith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study has its origin in a twenty-year-old interest in Sigmund Mowinckel's theory of an annual new year Coronation Feast of Jehovah in Israel. The first outcome of this interest was a volume entitled Studies in the Psalter (1934) in which I endeavored to show that the psalms which Mowinckel associated most closely with this supposed Coronation Feast were actually post-exilic, and in any case were Sabbath psalms. It is impossible, if my thesis is sound, that these psalms could ever have been and the apparatus of a pre-exilic feast of the type which Mowinckel proposed." --From the Preface
