Book Old English Interiors Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old English Interiors Classic Reprint written by C. J. Charles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Interiors Noteworthy examples, such as Haddon and Hardwick Halls, Sutton Place, Longleat, Hatfield and Burghley Houses, Ightham Moat and Warwick Castle have been carefully preserved and maintained - as we hope they will be for a long time to come - by their owners and their sucessors, but, for one reason or another, many others have been removed or destroyed. When I became interested in decorative art many years ago, I was impressed by the almost criminal ignorance which resulted in the ruthless sacrifice of work of this description. The housebreaker, for instance, was gifted with so little knowledge, that much valuable material and many models worthy of being placed in our national museums were thrown away or broken up, things beyond price, in the sense that once lost they can never be replaced. Time was when they were so lightly regarded as to be offered me for a few shillings. We have changed all that now, but the models I secured then have now proved to be of inestimable value. Book Selected Interiors of Old Houses in Salem and Vicinity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Interiors of Old Houses in Salem and Vicinity Classic Reprint written by Rogers And Manson Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Interiors of Old Houses in Salem and Vicinity The houses of New England built at this time reflected the precedent to be found in the contemporaneous Georgian period of English architecture. The owners and builders were almost all from England and it was, therefore, but natural that when building their houses they should turn to their mother country for their inspiration. Undoubtedly the most interesting development is that which took place in Salem and the surrounding towns. As Hallam once stated: No chapter in the history of national manners would illustrate so well, if duly executed, the progress of social life, as that dedicated to domestic architecture. It is interesting to see how clearly this relation between social and architectural life is shown by the early mansions of New England. During the eighteenth century, Salem was one of the most prosperous towns in the colonies. It was the home of many sea captains at a time when shipping was the principal business. Its wharves were usually crowded with ships and its streets were traveled by foreign sailors and townsmen alike. The people lived in a cosmopolitan atmosphere and their life was influenced accord ingly. As usual, in the course of events, certain members of the community gradually acquired a social position somewhat above that of the average towns men and, in a human way, desired. To express this difference, at the same time affording themselves some of the more unusual comforts of life. The expression of this wealth and dignity is to be seen in the stately houses which they built, where the excellent workmanship and well considered design produced comfort able mansions of real distinction. Book Old World Interiors

Download or read book Old World Interiors written by David Naylor and published by Gibbs Smith. This book was released on 2008 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interior designer David Naylor embraces the broad range of possibilities presented by a world of materials old and new, of objects both found and manufactured. He calls his approach "infusion design," by which he means capturing the ideas of the Old World without forgetting about the present, stirring melting pots of cultures and allowing opposites to coexist, and pulling together objects from around the world. The timelessness, natural warmth, and adaptability of the popular Southwesternstyle aesthetic provide an appealing backdrop for his interpretations, which eschew the clichs while retaining the essence. The architectural elements of the region-round beams, adobe walls, natural wood finishes-create a versatile aesthetic that can embrace an infinite variety of designs, while the nomadic nature of Americans generally, who move freely about the country bringing their favorite decor items with them, makes for limitless opportunities to infuse designs with intriguing juxtapositions and unexpected placements. Chapters include: Old World, New World Luxe Americana Contemporary Comfort Mixing It Up Trained as a painter and visual artist, David Naylor turned to furniture and interior design and has opened his own workrooms and showroom to feature pieces that he incorporates into his design commissions. He has studied at Philadelphia College of Art and later the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His designstudio, Visions Design Group, is located in Santa Fe, NM.

Book Interiors Beautiful and the Decoration of the Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Interiors Beautiful and the Decoration of the Home Classic Reprint written by M. L. Keith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interiors Beautiful and the Decoration of the Home Perhaps no feature of the house is of more importance than the hall. It is there, the first impressions of the dwel ling and its inmates are received. It should have an atmosphere of dignity, yet friendliness. It should invite, not repel. It should be generous, and not mean or niggardly. A small, narrow, cramped hall in a house of any preten sion, at once stamps the character of the owner. Nothing lends such dignity and charm to the hall as the staircase, when well designed. And perhaps among all the types none is so attractive as the Colonial, either curving in graceful lines, or in a straight flight to the floor above. The combination of white spindles and dark mahogany is quite irresistable. Many forms of this favorite type are herewith illustrated.
