Book Canada s Changing North

Download or read book Canada s Changing North written by William C. Wonders and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Canada's Changing North was first published in 1971, it quickly became a popular and reliable overview of the geography and culture of the Canadian North. In the three decades since it first appeared, great changes have occurred in this huge region that makes up two thirds of Canada's total area. This revised and expanded edition provides a new generation with a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the Canadian North and outlines how this region has become increasingly integrated into both the Canadian national fabric and the world.Among the many recent developments explored in Canada's Changing North is the legal recognition of aboriginal rights by the Canadian state, which has led directly to significant increases in their political and economic power. It also examines how economic development, which has long focused on non-renewable natural resources, particularly minerals, has grown to an enormous scale. Development of arctic oil and gas, which hinges on world supplies and national and international politics, has meant major changes across the North. Some of the new national parks in the Canadian North are already under threat from mineral development. Northern tourism has made it possible for a wide variety of affluent visitors to visit hitherto remote areas, affecting the ecology. The final selection, on northern challenges, discusses critical issues such as the impact of climatic change, the social needs (e.g. housing, education) of a rapidly increasing aboriginal population, environmental protection of unique regions, and defence of Arctic sovereignty. Of the sixty-two readings in this edition, forty-one are new.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people have a mental picture of the Canadian north that juxtaposes beauty with harshness. For the Van Tat Gwich'in, the northern Yukon is home, with a living history passed on from Elders to youth. This book consists of oral accounts that the Elders have been recording for 50 years, representing more than 150 years of their history, all meticulously translated from Gwich'in. Yet this is more than a gathering of history; collaborator Shirleen Smith provides context for the stories, whether they are focused on an individual or international politics. Anthropologists, folklorists, ethnohistorians, political scientists, economists, Indigenous Peoples, and readers interested in Canada's northernmost regions will find much to fascinate them.

Book Anthropology Public Policy and Native Peoples in Canada

Download or read book Anthropology Public Policy and Native Peoples in Canada written by Noel Dyck and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993-03-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Anthropology, Public Policy, and Native Peoples in Canada provide a comprehensive evaluation of past, present, and future forms of anthropological involvement in public policy issues that affect Native peoples in Canada. The contributing authors, who include social scientists and politicians from both Native and non-Native backgrounds, use their experience to assess the theory and practice of anthropological participation in and observation of relations between aboriginal peoples and governments in Canada. They trace the strengths and weaknesses of traditional forms of anthropological fieldwork and writing, as well as offering innovative solutions to some of the challenges confronting anthropologists working in this domain. In addition to Noel Dyck and James Waldram, the contributing authors are Peggy Martin Brizinski, Julie Cruikshank, Peter Douglas Elias, Julia D. Harrison, Ron Ignace, Joseph M. Kaufert, Patricia Leyland Kaufert, William W. Koolage, John O'Neil, Joe Sawchuk, Colin H. Scott, Derek G. Smith, George Speck, Renee Taylor, Peter J. Usher, and Sally M. Weaver.

Book An Evaluation of Native Harvest Survey Methodologies in Northern Canada

Download or read book An Evaluation of Native Harvest Survey Methodologies in Northern Canada written by Peter J. Usher and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native harvest statistics are counts, or estimates, of the numbers of each species of fish and wildlife taken over a specified time, in a specified area, by a particular group of Native people. This specialized form of fish and wildlife harvest statistics is akin to those counts or estimates taken by commercial and sport harvesters. The purpose of his study is to evaluate the methodologies employed in counting and estimating Native harvests, to assess the utility of existing data, and to recommend improvements for future data collection, management, analysis, and use. The primary geographic focus of this study is the Northwest Territories, where comprehensive surveys are currently underway, Special reference is made to northern Quebec, because earlier surveys there provided the model for current ones.
