Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Concord The points of chief interest in the historical and literary associations of Old Concord, may also be depended upon for its accuracy. Its historical mat ter I have drawn from the Concord histories of Lemuel Shattuck (1835) and Charles H. Walcott from the Concord Social Circle Memoirs, from the writings of Grindall Reynolds, and from the publications of the Concord Antiquarian Soci ety, chiefly those by the late George Tolman. For facts concerning Concord's literary notables I have drawn principally upon their own writings. Thebook also contains material from Concord tradition and family knowledge, not to be found in print. For help in verifying my statements, and for supply ing me with much matter previously unknown to me, I am much indebted to my neighbors Dr. Edward Waldo Emerson, Judge Prescott Keyes, and Mr. Adams Tolman. I am also greatly obliged for the courteous help of the librarians of the Concord Free Public Library, and I desire to express my thanks for permission to quote directly from the publications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord Some of the Things to Be Seen There This point of conscience; I the question spurn; The kindliest bosom, exile shall make stern, And days of danger, nights of want and gloom, Brush from the sensibilities the bloom. But at any rate the land was bought and paid for, and its savage grantors were so well satisfied with their bargain, that in all the Indian wars which followed, Concord was almost the only town in the entire colony that never suffered from an Indian raid upon its territory; though, to be sure, one farm was raided and one man was killed in the New Grant, an addition made to the town some years after its settlement, and later set off again. It is commonly held that it was this peaceful mode of set tling its Indian question that gave to the town its name of Concord, a name unknown until that time as the designation of any town, although it has been stated by later inquirers that it was the name that had been given by Peter Bulkeley, long before, to his old English residence at Odell. Book Souvenir and Guide to Historic Concord and Lexington Classic Reprint

Download or read book Souvenir and Guide to Historic Concord and Lexington Classic Reprint written by John W. Craig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir and Guide to Historic Concord and Lexington The site of this is well marked in many places throughout the town by means of monuments, tablets and stones. Perhaps the most notable of these is the Minute Man, a magnificent bronze, designed by Daniel French, a Concord boy, and marking as nearly as possible the spot where the sturdy farmers stood in their first attack. A reminder, too, of this may be seen in the old jones House which bears the mark of a British bullet. Behind this house is the Ridge which continues nearly parallel with Monument Street and Lexington Road. Along this the Minute Men pursued the British who fled along the roadway, routing them completely as they came into the open at Meriam's Corner. No rule can be laid down by which Concord can best be seen, for there are many points of interest to one, that might not seem of great moment to another, owing to the fact that there are two distinct classes who come here those who are attracted by the purely historic and those to whom the literary shrines appeal. For convenience, however, the publisher of this book has arranged the following routes all of which may best be started from Monument Square. Book Wayside Jottings Or Rambles Around the Old Town of Concord New Hampshire and Its Suburbs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wayside Jottings Or Rambles Around the Old Town of Concord New Hampshire and Its Suburbs Classic Reprint written by Howard M. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wayside Jottings, or Rambles Around the Old Town of Concord, New Hampshire, and Its Suburbs The reason for the writing and publication of the wayside J ottings may be told in a few words. I had been reading Charles W. Brewster's Ram bles About Portsmouth, published first in the Portsmouth Journal, of which he was the editor, and republished in a book form. The thought oc curred to me that a series of local sketches of Con cord and its suburbs might be of interest. I had been a resident of Concord for about fifty years, and during that time had taken a good many ram bles around the old town. I was also somewhat familiar with its history. Accordingly I began this series of local sketches in the Concord Evening Monitor in the fall of 1907, and continued the writing of them till the spring of 1909. Some of the miscellaneous sketches were published in the Concord Deity Patriot, till thirty five of them have appeared from time to time in these local newspapers. I have been interested in writing them and their publication in book form has been a labor of love, as whatever returns are received over and above the cost of publication will be devoted for the benefit of my three grandchil dren, whose names appear in the dedication. Book The Old Manse and a Few Mosses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Manse and a Few Mosses Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Manse and a Few Mosses Hawthorne, like most writers of the present day, was wont to send out his stories and sketches through the magazines of his time, and to collect them after ward into volumes. He gave the felicitous title, taken from Shakespeare, to one of these collections, of Twice Told Tales, and to another, of Mosses from an Old Manse. It was when he was living in the manse, or residence of the minister at Concord, Massachusetts, that he made this collection, and by a graceful turn gave a title to it which intimated how antique, for the most part, were the stories which he had been writing; how, like the moss, they gathered about the life of an old society. The collection consists of twenty-six tales, together with an introductory chapter, descriptive of the manse itself. Four of these have been selected, also introduced by the account of the old manse, which is one of the most characteristic of Hawthorne's play ful leisurely sketches. Book Concord Massachusetts Births Marriages and Deaths 1635 1850 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concord Massachusetts Births Marriages and Deaths 1635 1850 Classic Reprint written by Concord Massachusetts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord, Massachusetts Births, Marriages, and Deaths, 1635-1850 The book which this committee now offers to their fellow citizens for their approval is the result of the labors given under this vote. Concord is one of the oldest of our New England towns, having been settled in 1635. It has been termed with truth one of the seed towns. The descendants of the original settlers are scattered far and wide over the whole country. It is probable that the number of such descendants living outside of the town far exceeds the num ber of those living in it at the present time. Naturally enough, there has been a great and growing desire on the part of many-of these to obtain trustworthy information in respect to those from whom they are descended, or to whom they are related by ties of blood. There has been perhaps a still greater desire on the part of those who still live in the town to have the means of information which really \exist put into an available and convenient form. For these reasons and others, which will occur to those who are inof which this work is the fruit. The committee wish to say a few words about the character and formation of the book. The lists as printed are intended to be an actual transcript of the original rec ords. To those records in every case we have gone back and have never relied on any copy, even when it has been officially certified to be correct. These original records have been followed, too, in every particular - in Spelling, in abbreviations, in punctuation, in use of capitals, and the like - that is, as nearly as modern print can be made to follow ancient and sometimes almost illegible manuscript. A fact may be stated, probably not generally known, that for some years the records of births, marriages, and deaths were kept only in the town; in other years, only in the county books; and in still other years, both in the town and county records. Where such duplicate records exist we have followed the Town Record Book, at the same time comparing it carefully with the County Book, and stating in footnotes any discrepancies that may have appeared. The official record of deaths has also been compared with the records of the First Church and with the old gravestones, and the differences similarly noted. Wherever in the Town Record of deaths the age of the person dying is not stated, it has been supplied in brackets, wherever possible, from the church records, the gravestones, or the death notices in the local newspapers. To the record of the deaths in the town books we have added such others as do not ap pear in those books, but are found in the church records or on the gravestones. Nothing which appears in brackets or footnotes is to be taken as a part of the record. Such. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
