Book Old and New in the Countryside Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old and New in the Countryside Classic Reprint written by Victoria De Bunsen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-22 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New in the Countryside Times, describe some varying stages Of life in the countryside during the last forty years. The first two chapters belong to the end of the nineteenth century; The Age of Morris Dancing to the transition period which succeeded it, when a stirring of the social consciousness resulted in a variety of more or less superficial attempts to reconstitute rural life without that corresponding revolution in the social and economic sphere which alone could substantiate them. The Country-town refers to the period which immediately preceded the War, and still in greater or less degree survives it. The changes which that universal cata strophe is bound to produce are not yet to be determined; but that, for better or for worse, they herald the end of an epoch - the Passing of the Old Order - can no longer be open to dispute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Next to the Ground: Chronicles of a Countryside Major Baker, the master of White Oaks, was merciful to his beasts, especially his plough beasts. He knew they got their best, sleep in the hour or two before dawn, as he knew also that for fallowing they needed all the strength sleep and rest could give. He liked to think' of them stretched at ease, sometimes. Even snoring as a tired man snores. Waking them to be fed about the second chicken crow, was, to his Way of looking at things, haste without speed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and the New English Country Life: The Country Clergy, the Country Gentlemen, the Farmers, the Peasantry, the Eighteenth Century The public has recently shown so lively a curiosity touching everything connected with English rural life, that I should probably have been tempted to try my fortune with these sketches, even had no other reason existed for giving them to the world in their present form, and under my own name. But I have been prompted to do so by another motive as well. Some parts of this volume are only the reproduction in other words, of thoughts. Book The Home of the Countryside Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home of the Countryside Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home of the Countryside Four successful Country Life Conferences, held in New York City, beginning in December, 1910, and covering all the agencies that are vitally related to the human factor of the countryside of New England and the Middle Atlantic States, warranted this fifth conference on the topic, "The Home of the Countryside." It has been the constant aim of the County Work Department of the International Committee, to make contagious the spiritual motive in the country life movement of North America. This fifth conference, of which this volume is the record, proved conclusively how much need there is that the various agencies should come together and clarify their vision, as well as evolve a contagious unity of purpose. There has come a better understanding as the conferences have passed by, and it is safe to say that any topic which might be brought before this New York Conference concerning the country life movement, from a spiritual point of view, would be considered with that consciousness of solidarity that was altogether lacking in earlier conferences. Book The English Countryside Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Countryside Classic Reprint written by Ernest C. Pulbrook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Countryside WE live in times when change is so rapid that customs and institu tions of even a decade ago are no longer familiar. Everywhere the old is giving place to the new, and the methods of our forefathers are too leisurely for this hurrying age. The whole face of England is being rapidly altered, and this is perhaps more noticeable in the country, even in the most remote districts, than in the towns, where we look for change and improvements. So many old landmarks are being swept away that it seems time to call a halt and at least to take a survey before the old is banished by the new. In the towns it is perhaps almost too late to begin to preserve the buildings of the past, but in the country it is different. During most of the nine teenth century the country stagnated while the towns grew and prospered, but now ease of communication and the desire to see the country has brought about a change the city is being regarded only as a workshop and the country as the place in which to live. People, too, are beginning to understand that rural England is, and has always been, as important as the towns, and that scattered up and down the land are places not only beautiful in themselves, but full of the associations of the past. Each has played its part in the making of England as we know it to-day, and each has some story to tell, if we can only learn to read. An old rubbish heap may contain a wealth of romance, and a commonplace custom may have had its origin in the days when the inhabitants of these islands were little better than barbarians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Northern Countryside No one person can fitly describe a neighbor hood, no matter how long known, how well loved. Yet records of what is lovely and of good report in a district should be treasured and preserved, however imperfectly. My father's name, not mine, should rightly be signed to these pages, for it is his intimate knowledge of our countryside, loved and ex plored with a boy's ardor and a naturalist's insight since childhood, which they strive to set down. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Country House Perhaps one of the greatest charms of an old house is the number of superseded contrivances which it contains, na'ive engines of the antique domestic economy long since improved upon, the apparatus of methods no longer a part of the living science of existence. That powdered wigs are no longer common, are, in fact, seldom worn nowadays, by no means subtracts from our de light in the powdering closet attached to Perdita's bedroom, with the hole in the door through which the fine lady or gentleman meekly placed her or his head as on a block, so that the great puffs should not shower their whiteness over the whole exquisite figure. I am sure we are far happier in it than if we actually put it to its proper use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Open Air: An Anthology of English Country Life Another form of isolation has been brought by mo tors into country districts. One's circle of friends is no longer the circle of a ten-mile radius. On the contrary, one's circle of friends has small geographical reference. One friend is forty miles in one direction, another twenty-five miles in another, half-a-dozen are in Lon don, one in Hampshire and so on. Thus people living in a place may have no part in that place fundamentally, or in any place. Whereas in the old days whoever lived round about you, unless they were extremely difficult, you fitted into your circle of friendship. The more so cially gifted thus helped out the less, and the whole was leavened. Now, by more peremptory standards, we choose only those With whom we are 'in sympathy' the spontaneous functions of local life consequently de cay and the number of lonely old people must be le gion. Young people must earn their living in cities, so the country that is not within week - encl radius of Lon don is given up to the elderly and retired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gardens Old and New, Vol. 1: The Country House and Its Garden Environment But sculpture is as much in place in the landscape as in the formal garden, and is even more necessary in order to replace the features of a more strongly marked style, as the creators of such gardens quickly recognised. Yet there is, perhaps, no more difficult thing than to use garden sculpture well. It should occupy the right place, or none at all, and only the judicious eye can direct the choice. This is especially true of the human figure, for the urn and vase are sometimes almost necessary upon the terrace or by the garden stair. A peculiarly happy effect, full of suggestion in its character, is that of the ascent to the upper lawn at Clifton, which we illustrate here.
