Book Agricultural Standards

Download or read book Agricultural Standards written by Jim Bingen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food and agricultural standards have recently risen to the top of both national and international agendas. Popular concerns about the power of the World Trade Organization focus on the intertwined relationships between environmental protection, labor and human rights, and the standards used to produce and supply our food and fiber globally. In the developing world, agricultural grades and standards are an important part of the reconfiguration of roles and responsibilities between various public and private actors in market reform. This original and informative collection of studies of agri-food standards in the modern economy addresses these and helps to define the scope of the emerging study of the politics of standards setting. Following an overview essay dealing with the multiple ways of thinking about, approaching and defining food and agricultural standards, eleven case studies offer a rich body of evidence that assesses the processes, dynamics and potential consequences of global agri-food standards. For all interested in the strategic use of food and agricultural standards – from those in national and international governmental agencies, researchers and others in the academic and private sector to those in the private business sector – this volume offers a broader perspective on and will serve as an important resource.

The report is based on data collected by WHO from Member States and organized in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals health target 3.5 which calls on countries to strengthen “the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol”. The chapter on alcohol and health continues the series of WHO global status reports on alcohol and health and presents the latest available data on the status of, and trends in, alcohol consumption, as well as estimates of the alcohol-attributable disease burden and descriptions of policy responses worldwide. On the basis of data collected from countries on the treatment of substance use disorders the report describes the status of key components of treatment responses to alcohol and drug use disorders and proposes a new service capacity index for these disorders as an additional contextual indicator for monitoring progress in this domain of SDG health target 3.5. The report concludes with broad directions for international action to accelerate progress towards achievement of SDG health target 3.5.

Book Successful Wine Marketing

Download or read book Successful Wine Marketing written by James Lapsley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the work of wine marketing experts as expressed in their presentations to the annual three-week Wine Marketing Short Course at the University of California, Davis. The course was initially organized in collaboration with the international wine management curriculum sponsored by the International Organization for Vines and Wines (OIV). We have been involved in this course since its inception a decade ago. This book is intended for students in wine marketing and management, enology, and viticulture who seek to broaden their understanding of the wine sector. It is also intended for those already working in wine market ing and management who seek new ideas and insights. Finally, this book should be of general interest to others involved directly or indirectly in the grape and wine sector. Each chapter was written from the oral presentations of the authors and reflects the spontaneity and informality of the classroom environment. The writing may lack the "gravitas" of academic material, but it accurately presents the thinking and conclusions of those who make a living by mar keting wine. There is some duplication that serves to emphasize important points, and there are several case studies explaining real-life experiences in the industry. Legal requirements and commercial practices cited by authors may differ between regions and among institutions familiar to readers. However, the underlying principles guiding marketing strategies can be applied in different situations, for example, where supermarket wine sales may be restricted or direct sales prohibited.

Book Wine Production and Quality

Download or read book Wine Production and Quality written by Keith Grainger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gourmand Award for the No. 1 Best Wine Book in the World for Professionals Since the publication of Wine Production: Vine to Bottle (2005) and Wine Quality: Tasting and Selection (2009), there has been a great deal of change in the wine industry, and the perceptions of critics and expectations of consumers have shifted. Wine Production and Quality, Second Edition brings together its two predecessors in one updated and considerably expanded volume. This comprehensive guide explores the techniques of wine production in the vineyard and winery, and considers their impact upon the taste, style and quality of wine in the bottle. Part 1 of the book provides a structured yet easily readable understanding of wine production, from vine to bottle. The impact of natural factors, including climate and soil, is considered, together with the decisions made and work undertaken in the vineyard and winery. Part 2 looks at quality in wines: the concepts and techniques of tasting are detailed, along with the challenges in recognising and assessing quality. Also discussed are the steps producers may take, and the limitations they may face, in creating quality wines. The book will prove valuable to beverage industry professionals, wine trade students, wine merchants, sommeliers, restaurateurs , and wine lovers as well as those entering (or thinking of entering) the highly competitive world of wine production.
