Download or read book The MacNeice Mysteries Ebook Bundle 1 written by Scott Thornley and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exclusive bundle of the first three books in the critically acclaimed MacNeice Mysteries series. This bundle includes: In Erasing Memory, Detective Superintendent MacNeice is called to a crime scene of singular and disturbing beauty. A young woman in evening dress lies gracefully posed on the floor of a pristine summer cottage so that the finger of one hand regularly interrupts the needle arm of a phonograph playing Schubert’s Piano Trio. The only visible mark on her is the bruise under her chin, which MacNeice recognizes: it is the mark that distinguishes dedicated violinists, the same mark that once graced his wife. The murder is both ingenious and horrific, and soon entangles MacNeice and his team in Eastern Europe’s ancient grievances... The Ambitious City, the gripping second installment, reads like a crossover episode between Sons of Anarchy and Dexter, as Detective Superintendent MacNeice and his team face off against a gang of violent bikers and a bloodthirsty serial killer targeting the city’s successful young women of colour. In Raw Bone, Detective Superintendent MacNeice and his team are called in to investigate the two seemingly unrelated crimes, and quickly find themselves venturing into the dive bars and rooming houses of Dundurn, where Irish immigrants rub elbows with mercenaries and the city’s criminal underclass.

Download or read book Don t Let s Go to the Dogs Tonight written by Alexandra Fuller and published by Random House. This book was released on 2002-03-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A worthy heir to Isak Dinesen and Beryl Markham, Alexandra Fuller shares visceral memories of her childhood in Africa, and of her headstrong, unforgettable mother. “This is not a book you read just once, but a tale of terrible beauty to get lost in over and over.”—Newsweek “By turns mischievous and openhearted, earthy and soaring . . . hair-raising, horrific, and thrilling.”—The New Yorker Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time. From 1972 to 1990, Alexandra Fuller—known to friends and family as Bobo—grew up on several farms in southern and central Africa. Her father joined up on the side of the white government in the Rhodesian civil war, and was often away fighting against the powerful black guerilla factions. Her mother, in turn, flung herself at their African life and its rugged farm work with the same passion and maniacal energy she brought to everything else. Though she loved her children, she was no hand-holder and had little tolerance for neediness. She nurtured her daughters in other ways: She taught them, by example, to be resilient and self-sufficient, to have strong wills and strong opinions, and to embrace life wholeheartedly, despite and because of difficult circumstances. And she instilled in Bobo, particularly, a love of reading and of storytelling that proved to be her salvation. Alexandra Fuller writes poignantly about a girl becoming a woman and a writer against a backdrop of unrest, not just in her country but in her home. But Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight is more than a survivor’s story. It is the story of one woman’s unbreakable bond with a continent and the people who inhabit it, a portrait lovingly realized and deeply felt. Praise for Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight “Riveting . . . [full of] humor and compassion.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “The incredible story of an incredible childhood.”—The Providence Journal

Download or read book Plumber s Gap written by Marion Dees and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's name is Marion Michael Dees. He is sixty-four years old. He has worked in construction of one kind or another for most of his life, about forty-five years. Back in November of 2020, he found out he had a blood clot in his lungs and went into AFib. He was in and out of the hospital until August of 2021, when they finally did a procedure to stop his heart from going into AFib. During this time, he had a lot of downtime when he could not work or had to work from home. It was during this time that he started writing this book. Because of his love for South Dakota, he wanted to make his story about that area and its history. Although this is a fictional story with some actual facts, much liberation has been taken. However, it is based on actual locations and times that reflect the kind of events that could happen and some that did happen during this period. He hopes the readers will enjoy their journey back in time. He thanks them for reading his book.

Book excerpt: Home From The War gives a voice to Vietnam veterans. Thomas P. Evans was promoted to sergeant as a 19-year-old infantryman and put in charge of a 15-man mortar section. Just before his tour ended a mortar accident killed a Marine and dashed Evans' hopes of making the Marine Corps his career. When he returned home he wanted to put the war behind him and make something of himself. He describes the depression which first began when the My Laistory broke and eventually put him in the hospital. He explains the fear of fathering a child when he thought he might have been exposed to Agent Orange. He tells how he felt walking down the hallways of the Colt Firearms Company, knowing it produced a defective rifle that killed several Marines in his battalion. He documents his search for a wartime photo that led to a reunion with his Vietnam comrades. He describes a two decade split with a friend who opposed the war. And he writes of the letters his newspaper articles elicited from the loved ones of Marines killed years earlier. Evans does a great job of putting the reader inside the head of a Vietnam veteran. In 1967 Thomas P. Evans served in Vietnam in the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, the Walking Dead battalion. He is a computer programmer who lives in Connecticut. His Articles have appeared in VIETNAM, Leatherneck, and Purple Heart magazines, and in 25 newspapers, and in WWW.WORKTOGETHER.COM/PEOPLE/EVANS.HTM
