Download or read book Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections written by David H. Slay and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides historians and genealogists with a one-stop guide to every Civil War–related manuscript collection stored in Georgia’s many repositories. With this guide in hand, researchers will no longer spend countless hours pouring through online catalogs, emailing archivists, and wondering if they have exhausted every lead in their pursuit of firsthand information about the war and the experiences of those who lived through and were impacted by it. In assembling the first state-specific bibliography to be compiled since the Indiana and Illinois bibliographies were assembled for the Civil War Centennial in the 1960s, David Slay has expanded the scope of this survey to include works relating to women, African Americans, and social history, as well as the letters and diaries of soldiers who fought in the war, reflecting society’s evolving understanding and interest in this defining period of American life. In addition, this compilation is not confined to material produced from 1861 to 1865, but also includes collections spanning the lives of prominent Civil War figures, making it an invaluable source for biographers. Organized by institution, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections has many time-saving features, all designed to increase efficiency of research. Each collection description contains the title and catalog number used in the holding institution. Where possible, collection descriptions have been improved upon, providing the researcher with information beyond what is listed in the holding institution’s card catalog and finding aid. It also cross-references duplicate collections that are held in two or more institutions as microfilm or photocopies. Simply put, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections takes the mystery out of Civil War research in Georgia.

This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cullman Democrat was established about 25 years after the first newspaper to publish in the town named for the famous German settler, John G. Cullman. While it came relatively late on the scene, its circulation soon grew to match that of the most successful Alabama weekly newspapers. The Democrat was first published by Major W.F. Palmer in June of 1901. Palmer sold the paper to R.L. and J.E. Griffin in 1902, but by the end of January of 1903, the paper was purchased by Joseph Robert Rosson. The Democrat remained in control of the Rosson family for man years after."--Publisher's description

Download or read book Quantitative Narrative Analysis written by Roberto Franzosi and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative Narrative Analysis focuses on the following issues: 1. the fundamental features of narrative (as a specific type of text genre with certain invariant linguistic properties); 2. how the invariant properties of narrative can be used to structure narrative information in ways that basic qualitative information can then be analyzed quantitatively (story grammars, or Subject-Action-Object and respective modifiers, such as Time and Space of Action); 3. reliability (and how the computer and linguistic framework of the approach greatly increase data reliability); 4. data analysis (the book does not focus on general problems of data analysis, it will show how textual data can be analyzed with numbers).

Book excerpt: There are many books of many kinds and this volume properly classified would probably belong to the "sui generis," "sic trasit gloria mundi" variety. If the reader has grown a little rusty on classic Latin I do not mind saying to him further that the latter phrase has been sometimes translated, "My glorious old aunt has been sick ever since Monday," but I do not think that this revised version has been generally accepted as strictly orthodox. This book cannot be said to have been written without rhyme or reason for its pages hold more rhyme than poetry and three reasons at least, have conspired to give it literary existence. A hundred years and more from now it may be that some far descendant of the author, while fingering the musty shelves of some old library, may find some modest satisfaction in the thought that his ancient sire had "writ" a book.
