This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains over 55 photos and 10 maps. “The record of a New Zealand infantry regiment in Egypt, at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, from formation to disbandment....When the force sailed on 14 October 1914, the embarkation strength of the Otago Battalion was 34 officers and 1,076 other ranks....In April 1915 the division sailed for Gallipoli via Mudros, and on the 25th of that month the Otago Battalion landed with the brigade near Anzac Cove. The battalion was eight months at Gallipoli, fighting in several actions, particularly the second battle of Krithia and the battle of Sari Bair. It was evacuated in December 1915 and returned to Egypt where a 2nd Battalion was formed for each of the four original battalions and the combined New Zealand and Australian Division was reorganized as an all New Zealand Division which crossed to France in April 1916...On the Western Front the New Zealand Division was an elite formation and the regiment was involved in most of the major operations - the Somme, Messines, Third Ypres and the battles of 1918. Two VCs were won including one of the most famous, that awarded to Sgt Travis (real name Savage) of the 2nd Battalion, known as the king of No Man’s Land, who was killed in Rossignol Wood in July 1918 and is buried in Couin New British Cemetery; the divisional commander attended his funeral. He gets a chapter to himself in the book. This is a good, authoritative history as the title suggests, in which personalities are identified in the narrative, casualty figures and reinforcements noted; minor actions are described as well as the bigger picture."—N&M Print ed.
Download or read book Legacy of the Somme 1916 written by Gerald Gliddon and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of the Somme is widely regarded as one of the bloodiest and most controversial land battles ever fought. The first British troops went over the top on 1 July 1916 and by the day's end some 19,000 had been killed in the greatest one-day loss the British Army has ever known. This notoriety has ensured that the Somme and its many fallen warriors live on in countless books, plays and films. Documentary sources about the Somme abound and there is a voracious appetite among the book-buying public for more. Legacy of the Somme 1916 is a unique bibliographical and media guide to the battle, setting on record - in as comprehensive a listing as is possible - much of what has been written, filmed or sound-recorded in the English language between 1916 and 1995. This detailed listing includes official, unofficial and unit histories of the British and Commonwealth armies; biographies, autobiographies and memoirs; literature, drama and media; archives, tanks and war graves registers. Short commentaries accompany each entry and a detailed index enables accurate cross-referencing of subjects. First and foremost this is a unique work of reference which will appeal to all with an interest in the First World War. It will aid historians, researchers and enthusiasts to track down the vast amount of information available on the battle, and will also prove valuable to libraries, museums and the book trade.
Download or read book The Flamethrower written by Chris McNab and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is a weapon that has literally placed the power of fire in human hands – the man-portable flamethrower. This formidable weapon first saw battlefield use in the hands of German troops during World War I, and went on to arm the forces of many countries in World War II and beyond. Capable of inflicting horrific injuries – or of using up the oxygen supply inside a building, causing the occupants to suffocate – it projected a stream of flammable liquid, which could be 'bounced' off the interior surfaces of tunnels, buildings and other defended structures to reach deep inside a fortification. From its combat debut to its deployment in Vietnam, Chechnya and elsewhere, the flamethrower has proven to be devastatingly effective, not least because of its huge psychological impact on enemy troops. Yet despite this, the weapon and its operators have always been vulnerable, suffering from a very particular set of limitations, all of which are explored here. Featuring expert analysis, first-hand accounts and a startling array of illustrations and photographs, this is the definitive guide to an extraordinary chapter in the history of military technology.

Download or read book No Better Death written by William George Malone and published by Raupo. This book was released on 2005 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Cargo who had recently been promoted to Lt was killed in the trenches the night before last. A splendid young fellow – soldier-officer. Very sad really. Still, no better death. Perhaps the greatest leader of men during the Gallipoli campaign, Lieutenant-Colonel W.G. Malone was commanding officer of Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli. He is probably the best-known individual from that ill-fated campaign, a result both of his humanity and his superb leadership, which culminated in the successful assault on Chunk Bair on 8 August 1915. Malone was killed later that day. No Better Death reproduces previously unpublished correspondence and writings, as well as many images, also previously unpublished, generously provided by Malone's descendants, generously provided by Malone's descendants. This is a story of valour and fortitude under the enormous pressure of being responsible for the lives of many others. It is also the story of a man who has an unbounded love for his family, and constantly drew on the reciprocity of that love to pull through and overcome the frustrations, fear and life-threatening situations he was forced to endure.
Download or read book The Face of War written by Sandy Callister and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One hundred thousand New Zealanders went overseas to the First World War - many, for the first time, bearing Kodak cameras. The Face of War is the first book to examine the vernacular photos of World War I taken by its New Zealand participants. In this book, Callister discusses how photography was used to capture and narrate, memorialise and observe, romanticise and bear witness to the experiences of New Zealanders at home and overseas. By 1915 cameras had become affordable and popular, and were used by soldiers themselves to picture war as well as by officials, journalists and medical staff. But photography can be used both to record a true picture and to disguise the unpalatable, particularly in times of war. Callister's discussion is the first to argue for the importance of New Zealand photography to the history of war, but also examines in depth the contradictions of war photography: as a site of remembrance and forgetting; nation and sacrifice; mourning and mythology; subjectivity and identity. The Face of War is an authoritative history of New Zealand's World War I photography and its cultural, emotional and memorial roles"--Publisher's description.
