This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Guide and Album of the Cunard Steamship Company In pursuance of this undertaking, the new Company entered into a contract for the fortnightly conveyance of mails between Liverpool and Halifax, Boston, and Quebec. The contract was for a term of seven years, and the ships employed under it were to be of such a build that they might be available as troop ships, or for transporting stores in time of war. F our steamers were at once commenced, the Britannia, the Acadia, the Caledonia, and the Columbia, each of one thousand two hundred tons gross register, and of four hundred and forty horse power. The first of these, the Britannia, left Liverpool on her first voyage on the 4th of July, 1840, the day known to Americans as Celebration Day, thus inaugurating the service by a happy coincidence which, although unpremedi tated, was none the less significant of future success. The Britannia entered Boston harbour after a run of fourteen days and eight hours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Inseparable The Original Siamese Twins and Their Rendezvous with American History

Download or read book Inseparable The Original Siamese Twins and Their Rendezvous with American History written by Yunte Huang and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist (Biography) New York Times Critics’ Best of the Year One of NPR's Great Reads of 2018 A Newsweek Best Nonfiction Book of the Year With wry humor, Shakespearean profundity, and trenchant insight, Yunte Huang brings to life the story of America’s most famous nineteenth-century Siamese twins. Nearly a decade after his triumphant Charlie Chan biography, Yunte Huang returns with this long-awaited portrait of Chang and Eng Bunker (1811–1874), twins conjoined at the sternum by a band of cartilage and a fused liver, who were “discovered” in Siam by a British merchant in 1824. Bringing an Asian American perspective to this almost implausible story, Huang depicts the twins, arriving in Boston in 1829, first as museum exhibits but later as financially savvy showmen who gained their freedom and traveled the backroads of rural America to bring “entertainment” to the Jacksonian mobs. Their rise from subhuman, freak-show celebrities to rich southern gentry; their marriage to two white sisters, resulting in twenty-one children; and their owning of slaves, is here not just another sensational biography but a Hawthorne-like excavation of America’s historical penchant for finding feast in the abnormal, for tyrannizing the “other”—a tradition that, as Huang reveals, becomes inseparable from American history itself.
