Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Catalogue of the Japanese Section, and Descriptive Notes on the Industry and Agriculture of Japan Never until the year 1878, had Japan participated to any great extent in the various European International Exhibitions. Up to that time she had been merely represented by some of the provincial governments, acting inde pendently of the central Government. However, the Government determined to be worthily represented at the Vienna International Exhibition of 1873, and notwithstanding the numerous difficulties in the way, measures were taken to. Exhibit a very complete collection of the produce and manufactures of the country. The Commission was not appointed until June, 1872, owing to which: fact there was but little time allowed for preparations and further, the J apan ese manufacturers being as yet ignorant of the beneficial results to be obtained, were unwilling to send their goods to a place so far away as Vienna. Couse quently the Government was obliged to send officials into the various provinces with orders to buy and to collect such goods as might be suitable for exhibition. Book Gathering for Tea in Modern Japan

Download or read book Gathering for Tea in Modern Japan written by Taka Oshikiri and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining chanoyu - the custom of consuming matcha tea - in the Meiji period, Gathering for Tea in Modern Japan investigates the interactions between intellectual and cultural legacies of the Tokugawa period and the incoming influences of Western ideas, material cultures and institutions. It explores the construction of Japan's modern cultural identity, highlighting the development of new social classes, and the transformation of cultural practices and production-consumption networks of the modern era. Taka Oshikri uses a wealth of Japanese source material - including diaries, newspaper, journal articles, maps, exhibition catalogues and official records – to explore the intricate relationships between the practice and practitioners of different social groups such as the old aristocracy, the emerging industrial elite, the local elite and government officials. She argues that the fabrication of a cultural identity during modernisation was influenced by various interest groups, such as the private commercial sector and foreign ambassadors. Although much is written on the practice of chanoyu in the pre-Tokugawa period and present-day Japan, there are few historical studies focusing on the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Gathering for Tea in Modern Japan thus makes a significant contribution to its field, and will be of great value to students and scholars of modern Japanese social and cultural history.

Book Fenollosa s Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan

Download or read book Fenollosa s Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan written by Hiroshi Nara and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-07-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan: An American Scholar’s Role in Resurrecting the Art of Japan makes a critical assessment of American art theorist Ernest F. Fenollosa’s work in Meiji Japan. Ernest F. Fenollosa was first hired as a Tokyo University professor of political philosophy in 1878 but became an art theorist and policymaker for Japan’s Education Ministry. His illustrious career as an art administrator began with the 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that cemented the reputation of his work. Working closely with Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin), Fenollosa became the lightning rod in defining the course of modern painting as well as in establishing the first national art school. He is widely credited with resurrecting moribund traditional Japanese painting to health. The author shows this assessment of Fenollosa as the savior of Japanese traditional painting work may not have been deserved by examining the historical context in which he made the 1882 speech. The book offers the first English translation of Fenollosa’s 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that had been previously unavailable to the non-Japanese reading audience.
