Book excerpt: This self-help manual is what is used to help parents gain skills and understanding to help manage their child's eating disorder. It is the basis of the parent support and skills program from the Duke Center for Eating Disorders. This manual is intended to accomplish four basic goals. First, it gives parents tools to manage moment-to-moment difficulties that arise when they are trying to nourish a child with disordered eating. Second, it gives parents strategies to prevent burn-out and increase their social support. Third, it helps parents figure out how disordered eating symptoms may be helping their child to manage difficult situations and feelings. In turn, parents can then provide their children with healthy strategies that can replace these disordered eating symptoms and help their children to flourish. Finally, it helps parents to be role models of responsive self-parenting, something that their children are not very good at (and that we all could use some help with!). The program covers all sorts of topics: perfectionism, emotion awareness, family communication - fun stuff! While this may all sound challenging, my intention is that this manual presents skills in ways that seem very manageable: straight-forward, hopeful, and a little corny. I hope you find it useful and wish the best for you and your family. -Nancy Zucker, Director of the Duke Center for Eating Disorders

Book Off the Cuff

Download or read book Off the Cuff written by Anne Cooper Ready and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After-dinner speeches, toasts and roasts, product announcements, job interviews, eulogies, new business pitches, media interviews, arguments...virtually everything we say every day is "off the cuff." Yet how many of us are confident when asked, as we so often are, to just "say a few words"? An estimated 99 percent of what we say is impromptu, which is defined as without preparation or advance thought. Off the Cuff offers that preparation in an easy-to-read, easy-to-reference guide for putting words together to motivate, direct, entertain, and succeed. It will help you learn both basic and advanced skills in solving communication challenges that range from apologies and meetings to introductions and eulogies. Except for those rare moments when we have given a scripted speech, we've been speaking off the cuff our whole lives. Now it's time to learn how to do it easily, effectively, and fearlessly. Book Off the Cuff and Over the Collar

Download or read book Off the Cuff and Over the Collar written by Bishop John McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop John McCarthy's book, "Off the Cuff & Over the Collar: Common Sense Catholicism" is an enticing concoction of "Tuesdays with Morrie" blended with "Catholicism 101," topped with an added twist of Irish wit and decades of experience as a Roman Catholic priest. In over fifty bite-sized pieces, McCarthy clearly defines the Church's position and as always, openly voices his opinions- including where they begin to diverge from recent years' public stance of the Vatican. He addresses a variety of topics such as the infallibility of the Pope, abortion, divorce, saints, sacraments, bullying and teasing, nuns, Jews and Protestants. McCarthy tackles the shortage of priests, celibacy, homosexuality, birth control, the role of women in the Church, death and dying, and even heaven and hell, skillfully balancing the serious nature of these issues with his relaxed conversational tone and humor. Bishop John McCarthy speaks from the depth of his heart and faith, reaching out not only to currently practicing Catholics, but also to the millions of fallen away Catholics- the hurt, the disenfranchised, the indifferent, the divorced, the homosexual, the questioning agnostic, the liberals and the conservatives- even the self-professed "recovered Catholics." McCarthy fully embraces the wonderful Apostolic Church that was envisioned in Vatican II, and stands ready to ""throw open those magnificent doors to the heart of the Catholic Church, and invite you in with love and joy."" Bishop McCarthy is buoyantly optimistic that the Church- though she moves slowly and deliberately- is ready for change, especially under the leadership of the Pope Francis, to whom this book is dedicated. The new pope's immediate focus on simplification and service suggest indeed, a very common sense Catholicism. All profits from this book will benefit one of Bishop McCarthy's favorite charities: Saint Louise House... "empowering women with children to overcome homelessness." Sister Sharon Groetsch, D.C., says: "Bishop McCarthy's book is a wonderful response to a pressing need for ordinary Catholics (and the "Catholic-curious") to bring simple, direct insights to the lay-public. Moreover, it's fun The Bishop's style is conversational, clear, and well-laced with Irish humor. This is a quick and easy read, and a perfect pairing with your morning coffee." Rabbi Alan R. Freedman, Temple Beth Shalom, says: "In an age when religion is increasingly coming under attack, John McCarthy has come forth with a book that is a resounding treatise on the virtues of a life of faith . While addressed to a primarily Catholic audience, Bishop McCarthy provides observations and lessons on life that apply to all people of faith. His lifelong concern for all people is reflected in every page, "particularly in his consistent admonition to avoid bringing pain to others." There is a life lesson on every page of this book, and I encourage anyone seeking to live a better and more meaningful life to share in its words. The good Bishop has done it again " Rev. Larry Covington, Pastor of St. Louis Catholic Church, says: "Required reading for all current and former Catholics, and especially for seminarians and anyone engaged in the ministry Here lies no pontification of a prelate long ensconced in a purple silk bureaucracy, but practical words for the common Joe. McCarthy's common sense observations reflect his life as a provocative and sometimes controversial church leader who is, above all, a man who takes the task of being a good shepherd to heart."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you are looking for one book to make sense of the problem of evil, this book is for you." Sean McDowell Grasping This Truth Will Change Your View of God Forever If God is good and all-powerful, why doesn't He put a stop to the evil in this world? Christians and non-Christians alike struggle with the concept of a loving God who allows widespread suffering in this life and never-ending punishment in hell. We wrestle with questions such as... Why do bad things happen to good people? Why should we have to pay for Adam's sin? How can eternal judgment be fair? But what if the real problem doesn't start with God...but with us? Clay Jones, an associate professor of Christian apologetics at Biola University, examines what Scripture truly says about the nature of evil and why God allows it. Along the way, he'll help you discover the contrasting abundance of God's grace, the overwhelming joy of heaven, and the extraordinary destiny of believers.

The 'NARRATOR' is the only person to see the story before it is completed. He or she will ask his colleagues to fill in the blanks as indicated in the text. The 'NARRATOR' will then read the story out loud with the completed blanks. The resulting story will be stupid, ridiculous and usually hilarious. This fun game can be played by two or more people at any time and in any place -- e.g. at a party, on a rainy day, on the beach, in a cafe or when travelling. Book excerpt: Meet Susanna Newcome, who in 1728 became one of the first women in history to publish a book on, and publicly engage in, the discipline of Christian Apologetics. Susanna showed the world that when it came to the mind, women were not the weaker sex, and instead were equally brilliant, as well as capable defenders of the historic Christian faith. She lived her life refusing to apologize for defending the truth and challenging the status quo of the day. She constantly kept those around her on their toes theologically, and openly critiqued any unbiblical ideology that crossed her path. She had a passion for truth, and her deep faith compelled her to challenge those who would lead astray the consciences of sincere but unlearned Christians. Susanna truly was a force to be reckoned with for the kingdom of God and we can learn much today from the spiritual courage of this formidable woman of the past. Her book, An Enquiry into the Evidence of the Christian Religion, is not only an answer to the "Christian Deism" of its day but is a valuable work of Christian Apologetics in its own right. At the time it was published, one of many glowing reviews stated, "We have no performance on the same subject that is so short, and at the same time so strong, perspicuous, and convincing. It would be no dishonor to the greatest Divine to be thought its author."
