Book Parking and the City

Download or read book Parking and the City written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Shoup brilliantly overcame the challenge of writing about parking without being boring in his iconoclastic 800-page book The High Cost of Free Parking. Easy to read and often entertaining, the book showed that city parking policies subsidize cars, encourage sprawl, degrade urban design, prohibit walkability, damage the economy, raise housing costs, and penalize people who cannot afford or choose not to own a car. Using careful analysis and creative thinking, Shoup recommended three parking reforms: (1) remove off-street parking requirements, (2) charge the right prices for on-street parking, and (3) spend the meter revenue to improve public services on the metered streets. Parking and the City reports on the progress that cities have made in adopting these three reforms. The successful outcomes provide convincing evidence that Shoup’s policy proposals are not theoretical and idealistic but instead are practical and realistic. The good news about our decades of bad planning for parking is that the damage we have done will be far cheaper to repair than to ignore. The 51 chapters by 46 authors in Parking and the City show how reforming our misguided and wrongheaded parking policies can do a world of good. Book Off street Parking Requirements

Download or read book Off street Parking Requirements written by David Bergman and published by Amer Planning Assn. This book was released on 1991-05 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities face growing citizen concern about parking and its effect on local transportation networks. But these concerns must be balanced against the serious cost implications of parking standards on development projects. APA surveyed 127 zoning ordinances to compile this comprehensive report on parking standards for nearly 180 different land uses, including airports, universities, post offices, shopping centers, and telecommunications facilities. Within each land-use catagory, standards range from those that require the least amount of parking to those that require the most.

  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Parking Standards written by Michael Davidson and published by American Planning Association. This book was released on 2002 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new report, an expanded and updated version of a previous best seller, contains not only an exhaustive set of parking standards, but also a section dealing with the complexities of creating practical parking standards in the present-day U.S. For instance, there is general agreement in recent planning literature that when the supply of parking greatly exceeds typical demand, the results are detrimental to a range of stakeholders. However, while benefits may accrue from minimizing the amount of off-street parking, downsizing parking requirements may be a tricky proposition because many communities fear detrimenetal impact on overall community development objectives. The commentary in this report addresses that quandary, as well as techniques such as shared parking, maximum parking standards, downtown parking standards, and more.
