Book W B Yeats Ezra Pound and the Poetry of Paradise

Download or read book W B Yeats Ezra Pound and the Poetry of Paradise written by Dr Sean Pryor and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing the interplay of aesthetic forms and religious modes, Sean Pryor's ambitious study takes up the endlessly reiterated longing for paradise that features throughout the works of W. B. Yeats and Ezra Pound. Yeats and Pound define poetry in terms of paradise and paradise in terms of poetry, Pryor suggests, and these complex interconnections fundamentally shape the development of their art. Even as he maps the shared influences and intellectual interests of Yeats and Pound, and highlights those moments when their poetic theories converge, Pryor's discussion of their poems' profound formal and conceptual differences uncovers the distinctive ways each writer imagines the divine, the good, the beautiful, or the satisfaction of desire. Throughout his study, Pryor argues that Yeats and Pound reconceive the quest for paradise as a quest for a new kind of poetry, a journey that Pryor traces by analysing unpublished manuscript drafts and newly published drafts that have received little attention. For Yeats and Pound, the journey towards a paradisal poetic becomes a never-ending quest, at once self-defeating and self-fulfilling - a formulation that has implications not only for the work of these two poets but for the study of modernist literature.

Book excerpt: Light begins at Stonehenge, where crowds cheer a solstice sunrise. After sampling myths explaining First Light, the story moves on to early philosophers' queries, then through the centuries, from Buddhist temples to Biblical scripture, when light was the soul of the divine. Battling darkness and despair, Gothic architects crafted radiant cathedrals while Dante dreamed a "heaven of pure light." Later, following Leonardo's advice, Renaissance artists learned to capture light on canvas. During the Scientific Revolution, Galileo gathered light in his telescope, Descartes measured the rainbow, and Newton used prisms to solidify the science of optics. But even after Newton, light was an enigma. Particle or wave? Did it flow through an invisible "ether"? Through the age of Edison and into the age of lasers, Light reveals how light sparked new wonders--relativity, quantum electrodynamics, fiber optics, and more. Although lasers now perform everyday miracles, light retains its eternal allure. "For the rest of my life," Einstein said, "I will reflect on what light is." Light explores and celebrates such curiosity.

Download or read book The Writings Against the Manichaeans and Against the Donatists Part I The Manichaeans Revised written by Aurelius Augustine and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before converting to Christianity, Augustine was at one time a member of a group called the Manichaeans and this collection of works are his attempt to combat the growing threat that this religion caused to the rise and growth of the Christian church. The Manichaeans were a dualistic society that focused on the goodness of the spirit and the evil of the material. While basing their belief structure of Mesopotamian Gnosticism it is hard to say for certain that they were Gnostic themselves. Augustine shows sound arguments to counter the beliefs he reveals in this collection of writings even going so far as to have a verbal parley back and forth with a leading member of the religious movement Fortunatus. For example, several essays investigate sources - literary, pictorial, architectural - and Milton's use of those sources in his poetry. Others view Milton from the perspective of his age and seventeenth-century contemporaries such as Michael Drayton and Aemelia Lanyer.

Download or read book Tripping with Allah written by Michael Muhammad Knight and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Tripping with Allah is a road book, it’s a road book in the tradition of 2001: A Space Odyssey, rather than On the Road. Amazonian shamanism meets Christianity meets West African religion meets Islam in this work of reflection and inward adventure. Knight, the “Hunter S. Thompson of Islamic literature” seeks reconciliation between his Muslim identity and his drinking of ayahuasca, a psychedelic tea that has been used in the Amazon for centuries. His experience becomes an opportunity to investigate complex issues of drugs, religion, and modernity. Though essential for readers interested in Islam or the growing popularity of ayahuasca, this book is truly about neither Islam nor ayahuasca. Tripping with Allah provides an accessible look into the construction of religion, the often artificial borders dividing these constructions, and the ways in which religion might change in an increasingly globalized world. Finally, Tripping with Allah not only explores Islam and drugs, but also Knight’s own process of creativity and discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PARADISO is considered the most perfect part of the hereafter where the souls are permitted to live eternally if they can successfully complete the very difficult Celestial Examination process engaging the intellectual and personal guilt and forgiveness requirements system. Many celestial citizens take years, decades or centuries to complete. The Celestial Trial of Josephus, the Annual Lantern Parade and Romano’s awakening from his dream nightmare at the ending are the major subjects in this Book. This Celestial Trial of the ancient Jewish General and Roman writer, propagandist and collaborationist Flavius Josephus in discovering the real Spiritual Truths at the Celestial Supreme Court headed by the Biblical prophets Noah, Abraham and Moses is portrayed. Josephus is defended in Court by a late 19th century mortal American Barrister named Darryl Buchanan from Philadelphia who just successfully defended John D Rockefeller before Almighty GOD Himself in God’s Personal Supreme Peoples Court. The goal of the Celestial Trial of ‘Josephus verses the Celestial Kingdom’ is to discover the Holy Secrets and Spiritual Truths of his writings as to determine whether he did or did not fabricate and/or conceal the Biblical truths and steal the Prophecy that the next Ruler of the Roman Empire was destined to come from Judea to save his own body and soul? The Annual Lantern Parade at the Celestial Circus Maximus on Christmas Day has been a tradition since Jesus died on the Cross in the first century AD. The theme this year is called the Ancient & Divine Mysteries of the Universe. BOOK FOUR ends with the Devil and his Three Crown Princes still trying to manipulate, dominate and overthrow the Kingdom with a Final Curtain Call where the Tragic End Game occurs and the Mise-en-Abime shows the hero Journalist Romano home awoken immediately after his dream in his basement apartment at a New York City Catholic Church.

Book Milton in the Arab Muslim World

Download or read book Milton in the Arab Muslim World written by Islam Issa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length study of the reception of John Milton’s (1608-74) writings in the Arab-Muslim world, this book examines the responses of Arab-Muslim readers to Milton’s works, and in particular, to his epic poem: Paradise Lost. It contributes to knowledge of the history, development, and ways in which early modern writings are read and understood by Muslims. By mapping the literary and more broadly cultural consequences of the censure, translation and abridgement of Milton’s works in the Arab-Muslim world, this book analyses the diverse ways in which Arab-Muslims read and understand a range of literary and religious aspects of Milton’s writing in light of cultural, theological, socio-political, linguistic and translational issues. After providing an overview of the presence of Milton and his works in the Arab world, each chapter sheds light on how cultural and translational issues shape the ways in which Arab-Muslim readers perceive and understand the characters and motifs of Paradise Lost. Chapters outline the ways in which the figures are currently understood in Milton scholarship, before exploring how they fit into the narrative drama and theology of the poem, and their position in Islamic creed and Arab-Muslim culture. Concurrently, each chapter examines the poem’s subject matter in detail, placing particular emphasis on matters of linguistic, theological and cultural translation and accommodation. Chapter conclusions not only summarise the patterns and potentialities of reception, but point towards the practical functions of Arab-Muslim responses to Milton’s writing and their contribution to the formation of social ideas.
