De Maistre dans ce cha pitre ix_du livre Il De l'eglise gallicane qui con; tient un plaidoyer en règle contre l'autorité dela Defense. Mais il doit en ètre autrement de la ré flexion suivante Bossuet, dit l'illustre écrivain, ayant supprimé le titre ancien Défense de la Déclaration, et ayant mème déclaré solennelle ment qu'il ne voulait pas la défendre on n'a pu, sans insulter à sa mémoire, àla vérité et au pu blic, laisser subsister ce titre, et rejeter celui -de France orthodoxe, substitué au premier par l'im mortel prélat. Si l'on reproche avec raison aux premiers éditeurs des oeuvres posthumes de nous donner les écrits dont il s'agit comme l'expression définitive de la pensée de Bossuet ne devrait - ou pas les blâmer encore plus d'inscrire au frontispice d'uuouvrage abandonné par son auteur le titre réservé pour un autre ouvrage inexécuté, roulant sur le mème sujet, mais d'un ton et d'un esprit différent? Au lieu de consommer la faute commem céé par les éditeurs de Paris et de Versailles, et d'intituler Gallia orthodoxa cet assemblage arbi traire qu'ils ont composé avec deux écrits, ne con vient-il pas de défaire cet assemblage? C'est le seul moyen de montrer, dans la vérité historique, les phases et les indécisions de la pensée de Bos suet. En agissant autrement, on brouille tout; on donne à de nombreuses pages un nom qu'elles ré poussent; ou sanctionne la fraude reprochée à des adversaires.
