Book Odours in Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Odours in Wastewater Treatment written by Richard M. Stuetz and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wastewater treatment works have the potential to generate unpleasant odours, which can results in annoyance and consequently have a detrimental effect on a local population. As a result 'odour control and prevention' has become an important consideration both in the management of existing facilities and in the design and gaining of planning consent for new works. Odours in Wastewater Treatment provides readers with a detailed discussion on the basic principles involved in the formation of volatile compounds in wastewater treatment. Accounts are given of recent developments in the sampling and measurement of odours, practical examples in the prediction and dispersion of odorous emissions are offered and an overview of the technologies currently used to contain and treat odorous compounds presented. Contents Introduction Odours associated with wastewater treatment Odour sampling and measurement Assessment and prediction of nuisance odours Odour control and treatment

Book Control and Prevention of Odours in the Water Industry

Download or read book Control and Prevention of Odours in the Water Industry written by Richard M. Stuetz and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The release of unpleasant odours during wastewater and sludge treatment and disposal is not new. However, in recent years the level of complaints concerning the release of these offensive odours has increased. This is in part a direct result of the encroachment of housing on lands surrounding existing wastewater and sludge treatment works, together with the raised awareness of the public over its rights related to environmental issues. To avoid the creation of nuisance odours in wastewater and sludge treatment requires an understanding of those processes that are responsible. Odours that are formed within wastewater and sludge will not create an odour nuisance until they are released into the atmosphere. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms by which odours are formed and then released and dispersed in order to provide effective control systems. The CIWEM-IAWQ odour conference enabled practitioners, regulators and researchers to present findings on a wide range of topics relating to the control and prevention of odours. Twenty-two papers have been selected for these proceedings. They examine the regulation of odour emissions, techniques used to measure and model odour emissions and treatment technologies used to control and prevent odour formation and emission.

Book Odour Impact Assessment Handbook

Download or read book Odour Impact Assessment Handbook written by Vincenzo Belgiorno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Odours have become a priority concern for facility operators, engineers and urban planners who deal with waste and industrial treatment plants. The subjectivity of smell perception, its variability due to frequency and weather conditions, and the complex nature of the substances involved, has long hampered the regulation of odour emissions. This book provides a comprehensive framework for the assessment, measurement and monitoring of odour emissions, and covers: Odour characterization and exposure effects Instruments and methods for sampling and measurement Strategies for odour control Dispersion modelling for odour exposure assessment Odour regulations and policies Procedures for odour impact assessment Case studies: Wastewater treatment, composting, industrial and CAFO plants, and landfill Intended for researchers in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, and civil engineering, this book is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in wastewater treatment, environmental and air analysis, and waste management.

Book Biological Phosphorus Removal

Download or read book Biological Phosphorus Removal written by P. M. J. Janssen and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological phosphorus (bio-P) removal has become a reliable and well-understood process within wastewater treatment, despite being one of the most complex processes in the activated sludge process. Extended fundamental and full-scale research has been carried out into the bio-P process and the state-of-the-art is described in this report. A summarising historical overview gives insight into the establishment of the appropriate microbiological and biochemical basis of the process and the development of bio-P configurations in practice. Aspects of the bio-P process that have a direct influence on the efficiency of phosphorus removal are subjected to an in-depth investigation. This report presents guidelines for design and dimensioning in order to introduce and/or optimise the bio-P process in practice. Twelve bio-P installations are extensively described and the operational results and experiences are related to existing bio-P knowledge and guidelines. Based on a number of parameters, a comparison is made between the described bio-P plants. A steady state model is verified with extensive periods of practical experience of the plants. The bio-P model, which is provided on CD-ROM (available for download here), offers a reliable insight into the bio-P process, coupled with sensitivity analyses regarding wastewater characteristics and process parameters for the anaerobic volume and the P-ortho concentration in the final effluent. The report ends with a systematic approach to the design of the bio-P process, based on the background of the bio-P process itself, much practical experience and the analysis of operational bio-P plants. Also presented is a systematic approach to tackle operational aspects of the bio-P process in order to generate an acceptable low P effluent concentration. This optimisation of the bio-P process operation is supported by a decision diagram. Biological Phosphorus Removal will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with wastewater treatment, including plant managers, process designers, consultants and researchers.
