Download or read book A Country of Extraordinary Ghosts written by Onyeka Nwelue and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let us start from the beginning of this story, when God created the Heaven and the Earth. Shapeless earth; nothing was real. It looked deep. Like a well. A well with no water. Darker as it got deeper. Everything seemed ordinary. Its extraordinariness was brought about by the omnipotence of God. God solidified everything. He said, Let there be Light. Light came, shining like a young, excited virgin." At Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Yaba, a young patient tells his fellow patients and nurses and doctors his intriguing story. From Lagos, he transports his listeners to the Biblical Sodom and Gomorrah, leading them to Rome, where everything unveils. A Country of Extraordinary Ghosts is a stunning narrative, that is shaped with magical realism. It explores mental health, politics, sexuality, religion and abuse in an uncanny way. "Onyeka Nwelue has written a very powerful novel that you wouldn't want to ignore." - Ephraim Adiele, The Trent.

Download or read book Breathing and Walking Around written by Kathy A. Bradley and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathing and Walking Around is not a memoir. It is a record of four years' worth of observations of common people, everyday events, and the natural world made by Kathy Bradley from her home in the coastal plains of South Georgia. A lawyer by training, a storyteller by nature, she shares with precision and layer upon layer of sensory image simple tales that emerge, in the end, as parables.Beginning at Sandhill, the house she built on her family farm, Bradley takes the reader with her as she walks miles of dirt roads with the dogs Lily and Tamar, alert to the details of rural living – the movement of the seasons, the nearness and unpredictability of wildlife, the sights and sounds otherwise drowned out by twenty-first century living. The meandering continues down the Atlantic beaches, the shorelines of inland lakes, backroads and interstates, and we are at her shoulder as she, like a paleontologist, uncovers joy in the magic and mystery of the familiar and the brand-new.But Breathing and Walking Around is a true story and, so, along with the joy there are moments of questioning and uncertainty, moments when doubt challenges faith. It is in these moments that Bradley struggles to bring order to her own life, that she most clearly articulates the universal truths that weave through all our stories, ribbons of continuity and hope.

Download or read book I Am the American Dream written by Chu M. Tang and published by All Our Lives Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-04 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader, Don't chase a dream. Become the Dream itself! I Am the American Dream is dedicated to all who courageously dare to DREAM, no matter where you are in the world. This book is about two immigrants who came to America from two distinct countries and share the same American Dream. We tell the stories of how we followed our childhood dreams from Cambodia and Hong Kong. Our paths finally crossed in America decades later. “Two souls, two journeys, till their paths crossed, becoming one life…” We do not portray the American Dream as superior to any country’s dream. We write about facing bullying, racism, discrimination, loss of hope, and family challenges between two cultures (Asian and American). We share how we chose the nontraditional path to breakthrough, thinking outside the box, maintaining a positive mindset, and embracing our differences. We moved to America for freedom and opportunities. We realized no one handed us the American Dream; we had to work hard for it. For over 45 years, we never gave up. Along our journey, we discovered one profound truth: the Dream isn’t something you chase; we are the Dream! This unique blend of memoir, vivid imagery, and poetry is inspired by Chu's work in Oscar-winning films like The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Finding Dory, and Coco. Each scene is crafted as a standalone short story, capturing a spectrum of emotions that will deeply resonate with you. A picture is worth a thousand words; this book is enriched by stunning original artwork illustrated by two talented New Zealand artists. You will ponder each illustration as if admiring a painting in a museum. Four generations’ worth of stories, woven together, form the backbone of this book. The stories are a shocking yet heartwarming collection that showcases the growth and resilience of the human spirit and delivers hearty laughs along the way. This book is as real and raw as it gets. We hope you will be curious to open it and ready to be inspired :). With Love, Chu & Wayne

Download or read book The Place of Knowing written by Emma Lou Warner Thayne and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intriguing spiritual memoir from an unusual woman. Centered on Thaynes near-death experience following a car accident when she was in her 60s, this autobiography contains thematic chapters that explore her changing beliefs about mortality through meditations on family, language and other daily concepts. As a Mormon grandmother, parts of Thaynes lifeher long marriage, religious devotion and large familyare seemingly typical for someone of her generation. However, Thayne is also a poet and writer, weaving many of her poems and other writings into the body of this work. Often, Thayne describes the two roles of homemaker and author as being at odds with one another, at least within her own mind. In addition to her active, fulfilling involvement in the Mormon Church, she characterizes her writing life as almost a personal struggle. In a major theme of the book, Thayne seeks to resolve the internal conflict she feels when torn between her vocation and her concerns about meeting outside expectations. Interestingly, she addresses this internal conflict by looking both into her Mormon heritage and out toward other spiritual traditions and lifestyles. Discussing her parents and grandparents, Thayne reveals their warmth and the absence of doctrinaire beliefs in her childhood home. Her description of everyday Mormonism could be compared to the womens Islam for Muslim writers like Fatima Mernissi and Leila Ahmed. However, in her search for enlightenment, Thayne isnt content merely focusing on previous generations of her own family. Instead, she visits healers, helps bring to light the work of artists with AIDS and recognizes many influences from outside her own community. As a result, shes a complex, evolving narrator, grappling slowly with her own expectations and the challenges of life. Her meditative, fluid narrative might not satisfy readers looking for an eventful, action-oriented story, but readers interested in the optimistic pursuit of spiritual development shouldnt miss this one. Gentle, inclusive ruminations sure to strike a chord.

Book excerpt: A biting memoir with an over the top package! This is your warning! This book contains Count Dracula’s memoirs. And as you would expect, there are plenty of hideous creatures in it—giant yetis, insidious werewolves, slimy fish monsters—maybe you shouldn’t read it! You might learn things you didn’t know about monsters before. Hair-raising things that make these monsters appear . . .friendly . . .even downright human. So, take my advice. Put the book down and move on before you get caught in its clutches. Sincerely, Van Helsing PS-But if you do read this book, you will be enchanted by the incredibly imaginative full-color illustrations through out, the fabulously appealing cover, and the original wit captured within.
