It is the first book to examine the study of the oceans during the Cold War era and explore the international focus of American oceanographers, taking into account the roles of the U.S. Navy, United States foreign policy, and scientists throughout the world. Jacob Hamblin demonstrates that to understand the history of American oceanography, one must consider its role in both conflict and cooperation with other nations. Paradoxically, American oceanography after World War II was enmeshed in the military-industrial complex while characterized by close international cooperation. The military dimension of marine science--with its involvement in submarine acoustics, fleet operations, and sea-launched nuclear missiles--coexisted with data exchange programs with the Soviet Union and global operations in seas without borders. From an uneasy cooperation with the Soviet bloc in the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, to the NATO Science Committee in the late 1960s, which excluded the Soviet Union, to the U.S. Marine Sciences Council, which served as an important national link between scientists and the government, Oceanographers and the Cold War reveals the military and foreign policy goals served by U.S. government involvement in cooperative activities between scientists, such as joint cruises and expeditions. It demonstrates as well the extent to which oceanographers used international cooperation as a vehicle to pursue patronage from military, government, and commercial sponsors during the Cold War, as they sought support for their work by creating "disciples of marine science" wherever they could.

Many sea creatures left traces of their existence in rock layers and layers of sediment that became part of Earth's crust. The oceans take up a lot of heat from the sun. Water also holds more heat than air because it is much denser. Surprisingly, a slight change in temperature can cause considerable changes in water density because it is so sensitive to temperature changes. Oceanography is essential for our health. Oceanic pollutants, for example, can be hazardous to many marine organisms and humans. These pollutants can include mercury and pesticides that wash off of ships into the ocean and stay there for long periods of time before bacteria break them down into more minor compounds. These tiny compounds eventually make their way to the ocean floor, where they are taken up by phytoplankton in the ocean's water column. Another pollutant found in the oceans is plastic. Plastic bags, packaging, synthetic fishing lines, and other items are polluting the ocean's water. Many studies underway determine how much of these pollutants are being taken up by sea life, and sooner or later, it will end up on our dinner plates. Sea level change has been a critical focus for oceanographers because of its impact on human society. In addition to contributing to climate change, sea-level change is directly associated with flooding of coastal areas and erosion along river banks and mountain ranges. Learning about oceanography can help us understand the natural world around us because it combines chemistry, physics, biology, and marine science. Because of this, it is a great way to learn more about the world we live in.

In recent years, a new field of scientific research has been put forward, the so-called (microbial) oceanography, which offers a new mapping of the ocean from its shiny surfaces to lightless sea floors. Oceanography combines techniques of molecular biology, gene sequencing, bioinformatics, and remote sensing, among others. Oceans are a crucial factor in global climate and necessary condition for human survival on earth, and findings from oceanography can help people better understand life (and survival) in the Anthropocene. Not only are all life forms of marine origin, but the oceans also host extremophiles—that is, microbial life forms living under extreme conditions of heat, cold, lack of light—which are integral to understanding what possible alternative life forms might look like. It may be that such mainly anthropogenic forces as overfishing, pollution, deep-sea mining, and acidification suggest that a new concept of the ocean—Anthropocean—needs to be discussed.
