Book Oceanography of the Grand Banks Region and the Labrador Sea in 1964

Download or read book Oceanography of the Grand Banks Region and the Labrador Sea in 1964 written by Ronald C. Kollmeyer and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five oceanographic surveys were conducted in the vicinity of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland in support of International Ice Patrol operations in 1964. Measurements of temperature and salinity obtained from serial Nansen observations were used to determine the dynamic topography, a principal factor in studying the most probable drift of icebergs endangering shipping in this area. Later analysis of selected oceanographic sections was accomplished to calculate the volume flow and heat transport through these sections. An additional survey convered the area adjacent to Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland, and a section between South Wolf Island, Labrafor, and Cape Farewell, Greenland. Analyses for dissolved oxygen and nutrients were made on sea water samples from the latter section. Preliminary studies of iceberg deterioration and specific drift factors were conducted. (Author)

Book The Physical Oceanography of the Arctic Mediterranean Sea

Download or read book The Physical Oceanography of the Arctic Mediterranean Sea written by Bert Rudels and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-09-19 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Oceanography of the Arctic Mediterranean Sea describes the circulation and the processes in the Arctic Mediterranean, how our present knowledge has developed, and presents recent changes caused by a gradually warmer global climate. The Arctic Mediterranean Sea has been intensively studied in recent years, especially during the fourth International Polar Year, 2007–09, and we have become increasingly aware of the changes presently taking place. This book collects and presents newly acquired knowledge and sets it in perspective to previous studies. Authored by a world-renowned leader in the field, this book explores the role of this small but important sea in the global oceanic circulation and climate—a must-read for researchers and students in the fields of oceanography and climate science. - Relates observed features to active processes and provides sufficient background information to understand the theoretical explanations - Presents the Arctic Mediterranean Sea in the context of global ocean circulation and climate - Presents a modern, comprehensive, and coherent treatment of Arctic (and subarctic) physical oceanography

Book Archaeological Oceanography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert D. Ballard
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2008-07-21
  • ISBN : 9780691129402
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Archaeological Oceanography written by Robert D. Ballard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological Oceanography is the definitive book on the newly emerging field of deep-sea archaeology. Marine archaeologists have been finding and excavating underwater shipwrecks since at least the early 1950s, but until recently their explorations have been restricted to depths considered shallow by oceanographic standards. This book describes the latest advances that enable researchers to probe the secrets of the deep ocean, and the vital contributions these advances offer to archaeology and fields like maritime history and anthropology. Renowned oceanographer Robert Ballard--who stunned the world with his discovery of the Titanic deep in the North Atlantic--has gathered together the pioneers of archaeological oceanography, a cross-disciplinary group of archaeologists, oceanographers, ocean engineers, and anthropologists who have undertaken ambitious expeditions into the deep sea. In this book, they discuss the history of archaeological oceanography and the evolution and use of advanced deep-submergence technology to locate and excavate ancient and modern shipwrecks and cultural and other sites deep under water. They offer examples from their own expeditions and explain the challenges future programs face in obtaining access to the resources needed to carry out this important and exciting research. The contributors are Robert D. Ballard, Ali Can, Dwight F. Coleman, Mike J. Durbin, Ryan Eustace, Brendan Foley, Cathy Giangrande, Todd S. Gregory, Rachel L. Horlings, Jonathan Howland, Kevin McBride, James B. Newman, Dennis Piechota, Oscar Pizarro, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh, Cheryl Ward, and Sarah Webster.

Book Measuring Ocean Currents

Download or read book Measuring Ocean Currents written by Antony Joseph and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-08-12 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Ocean Currents: Tools, Technologies, and Data covers all major aspects of ocean current measurements in view of the implications of ocean currents on changing climate, increasing pollution levels, and offshore engineering activities. Although more than 70% of the Earth is covered by ocean, there is limited information on the countless fine- to large-scale water motions taking place within them. This book fills that information gap as the first work that summarizes the state-of-the-art methods and instruments used for surface, subsurface, and abyssal ocean current measurements. Readers of this book will find a wealth of information on Lagrangian measurements, horizontal mapping, imaging, Eulerian measurements, and vertical profiling techniques. In addition, the book describes modern technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures, including HF Doppler radar systems, satellite-borne sensors, ocean acoustic tomography, and more. Crucial aspects of ocean currents are described in detail as well, including dispersion of effluents discharged into the sea and transport of beneficial materials—as well as environmentally hazardous materials—from one region to another. The book highlights several important practical applications, showing how measurements relate to climate change and pollution levels, how they affect coastal and offshore engineering activities, and how they can aid in tsunami detection. - Coverage of measurement, mapping and profiling techniques - Descriptions of technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures - Reviews crucial aspects of ocean currents, including special emphasis on the planet-spanning thermohaline circulation, known as the ocean's "conveyor belt," and its crucial role in climate change
