After their mother’s suicide, the girls’ father shut down emotionally, leaving Alex responsible for caring for Colleen and little Riley. Now the girls are grown and navigating different directions. Decades may have passed, but the unresolved trauma of their mother’s death still looms over them, creating distance between the sisters. Then, on a March night, a storm rages near the coast of northeastern Massachusetts. Alex sits alone in an old farmhouse she inherited. The lights are out because of the storm; then, an unexpected knock at the door. When Alex opens it, her beautiful younger sister stands before her. Riley has long been estranged from their family, prompting Colleen to hire the private investigator from whom they’d been awaiting news. After her mysterious visitation, Alex and Colleen are determined to reconcile with Riley and to face their painful past.
Download or read book Beach of the Dead written by Elena Schacherl and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escaping a crumbling marriage and a frigid Calgary winter, Shari Shapiro—a retired teacher and an Italian Jewish immigrant—flees to Puerto Vallarta (PV), Mexico. Despite the lush, vibrant surroundings, she grieves her mother’s death. Since family ghosts appear whenever she enters a bathroom, death is never far from her thoughts. Yet she longs to embrace life again. She also struggles with issues faced by other baby boomers such as retirement. Eager for tequila to dull her pain, Shari heads to a bar on Playa Los Muertos, Beach of the Dead. Here she meets Carlos, a skittish, but sexy, former revolutionary who mourns the death of his wife. He strongly resembles Subcomandante Marcos, the legendary Zapatista leader, a post-modern Che Guevara. Paramilitaries stalk Shari and Carlos and the danger grows as does their attraction to each other. Together they end up supporting Mexico’s poverty-stricken beach vendors. Elena Schacherl was born in Trieste, Italy, and immigrated to Canada as a young child. She now lives in Calgary, Alberta and travels to Puerto Vallarta every winter. After a post-graduate education in English and a career in non-profit management, about ten years ago Elena took on a new challenge—writing fiction. Since then, she’s studied creative writing at Calgary’s Alexandra Writers’ Centre. She’s also a member of the East Village Writers’ Circle and the Writers’ Guild of Alberta. Elena has published several short stories. In 2017 “Swimming with Sharks” was included in the art book Printed Word, on permanent exhibit at the main branch of the Calgary Public Library. And “Let’s Go” was accepted by Colorado’s Living Springs Publishers’ Baby Boomers Plus, Stories Through the Ages anthology. With her father Dr. Ugo Schacherl, she also co-translated from Italian to English, Giovanni Pascoli’s poem “Psyche”, published in the Sage of Consciousness E-zine.

Book excerpt: Lauren Stone's emotionally driven debut delves into the mind of one woman through her journey of recovery, growth, and survival. "A story that needs to be told." - Taylor Fraser, Award Winning Director of the Foreward Podcast A lot can happen in seven days, especially for someone with mental illness. Amelia is about to turn 30, but instead of celebrating, she is overpowered by her battle against anxiety and depression driven by the inner voices of her little monster- her eating disorder. But as days progress, the mundane becomes the unmanageable. She self-medicates with alcohol and sinks lower into vivid flashbacks of her and Dominic backpacking the world together. One day he went to Guatemala, the next he vanished like a ghost, leaving Amelia to remain in the depths of her eating disorder alone. That is, until she meets Emmett, her new neighbor with schizoaffective disorder she's deemed as her guardian angel from afar. Based on a true story, In Body I Trust dives into the mind of Amelia as she struggles to swim from the deepest, darkest parts of herself back to the surface, before it's too late.
Download or read book Escape to Japanese Captivity written by Captain Mick Jennings and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mick and Margery Jennings's comfortable life in Singapore ended with the Japanese invasion in late 1941. Margery was captured in Sumatra after HMV Mata Hari, the ship taking her and other families to safety in Australia, was bombed. Mick left Singapore after the surrender in February 1942 when he and other soldiers commandeered a junk and sailed to Sumatra. After crossing the island, he and Bombardier Jackson set sail for Australia in a seventeen-foot dinghy. After an appalling ordeal at sea he too was captured and, having recovered in hospital, was incarcerated on Sumatra until moved to Changi Goal in May 1945. Despite not being far apart, Mick and Margery never saw each other again, although they managed to exchange a few letters. Tragically Margery died of deprivation and exhaustion in May 1945, shortly before VJ day, while Mick miraculously survived. Based on personal accounts and Margery’s secret diary, this outstanding book describes in graphic detail their attempted escapes and horrific imprisonments. Above all it is a moving testimony to the couple’s courage, resilience and ingenuity.
