Book Should We Fertilize the Oceans

Download or read book Should We Fertilize the Oceans written by Andrea Catherine Ryan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Martin's 'iron hypothesis' (Martin, 1990), and the subsequent ground-breaking IRONEX experiments (Martin 1994, Coale 1996) have stimulated wide spread speculation about the concept of fertilizing the oceans. It has been suggested that adding nutrients to the open oceans will stimulate primary production, increasing the sequestration of carbon dioxide and enhancing potential fish harvest. Ocean fertilization has thus been heralded as a possible cure for global climate change and world food shortages. Despite considerable scientific effort, private investment, and public interest in this field there has been limited evaluation of the feasibility of ocean fertilization. This thesis attempts to fill this void by addressing not only the scientific, but also the economic and policy dimensions of ocean fertilization. It starts by reviewing current research proposals and implementation activities in the field of ocean fertilization. It identifies potential environmental impacts and biogeochemical consequences of ocean fertilization, highlighting the outstanding scientific unknowns associated with this field. The study reviews cost estimates compiled by the private sector, and examines likely practical obstacles to implementation. Legal, political and public response to fertilization proposals is also explored. Finally, some of the ethical concerns relating to fertilizing the oceans are discussed, and recommendations on future research directions and initiatives to manage this rapidly growing field are provided.

Book Migration Ecology of Marine Fishes

Download or read book Migration Ecology of Marine Fishes written by David H. Secor and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A synthetic treatment of all marine fish taxa (teleosts and elasmobranchs), this book employs explanatory frameworks from avian and systems ecology while arguing that migrations are emergent phenomena, structured through schooling, phenotypic plasticity, and other collective agencies. The book provides overviews of the following concepts: The comparative movement ecology of fishes and birds; The alignment of mating systems with larval dispersal; Schooling and migration as adaptations to marine food webs; Natal homing; Connectivity in populations and metapopulations; The contribution of migration ecology to population resilience

  • ISBN : 0128016876
  • Pages : 468 pages

Download or read book Sea Otter Conservation written by Shawn Larson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea otters are good indicators of ocean health. In addition, they are a keystone species, offering a stabilizing effect on ecosystem, controlling sea urchin populations that would otherwise inflict damage to kelp forest ecosystems. The kelp forest ecosystem is crucial for marine organisms and contains coastal erosion. With the concerns about the imperiled status of sea otter populations in California, Aleutian Archipelago and coastal areas of Russia and Japan, the last several years have shown growth of interest culturally and politically in the status and preservation of sea otter populations. Sea Otter Conservation brings together the vast knowledge of well-respected leaders in the field, offering insight into the more than 100 years of conservation and research that have resulted in recovery from near extinction. This publication assesses the issues influencing prospects for continued conservation and recovery of the sea otter populations and provides insight into how to handle future global changes. - Covers scientific, cultural, economic and political components of sea otter conservation - Provides guidance on how to manage threats to the sea otter populations in the face of future global changes - Highlights the effects that interactions of coastal animals have with the marine ecosystem

Book Polar Bears

  • Author : IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group. Working Meeting
  • Publisher : IUCN
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9782831706634
  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book Polar Bears written by IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group. Working Meeting and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings provide an overview of the ongoing research and management activities on polar bears in the circumpolar arctic. Together with the previous 12 proceedings, they provide an historic record of international efforts in protecting polar bears from over-harvest and document more recent concerns of threats arising from increased human activities in both the Arctic and in regions far beyond the realm of polar bears. More proactive management is needed to address limitations in the knowledge of population dynamics. New information indicates that the greatest future challenges to polar bear conservation may be ecological change in the Arctic due to climate change and pollution. The complex, global nature of the issues requires international cooperation and development of diverse, new approaches to address them.
