Download or read book Ocean Devotions written by Michael Glenn Maness and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What a journey! The 366 mariner metaphors were pulled from the first 60 volumes of the 63-volume New Park Street Pulpit & The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, a set of 3,561 sermons delivered between 1855-1872. We edited freely. More, it seems, than any other metaphor, Charles H. Spurgeon used the mariner to illustrate the voyage of the Christian in service to God. As the trade winds bellow our sails and push us towards our Fair Haven, many spiritual challenges wash our decks. One masterpiece after another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster--a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed "Black Heart" every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing. Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him. But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.

Book Devotion

Download or read book Devotion written by Adam Makos and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • From America’s “forgotten war” in Korea comes an unforgettable tale of courage by the author of A Higher Call. “In the spirit of Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat comes Devotion.”—Associated Press • “Aerial drama at its best—fast, powerful, and moving.”—Erik Larson Devotion tells the inspirational story of the U.S. Navy’s most famous aviation duo, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend. A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Tom passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country. An African American sharecropper’s son from Mississippi, Jesse became the navy’s first Black carrier pilot, defending a nation that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar. While much of America remained divided by segregation, Jesse and Tom joined forces as wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32. Adam Makos takes us into the cockpit as these bold young aviators cut their teeth at the world’s most dangerous job—landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier—a line of work that Jesse’s young wife, Daisy, struggles to accept. Deployed to the Mediterranean, Tom and Jesse meet the Fleet Marines, boys like PFC “Red” Parkinson, a farm kid from the Catskills. In between war games in the sun, the young men revel on the Riviera, partying with millionaires and even befriending the Hollywood starlet Elizabeth Taylor. Then comes the conflict that no one expected: the Korean War. Devotion takes us soaring overhead with Tom and Jesse, and into the foxholes with Red and the Marines as they battle a North Korean invasion. As the fury of the fighting escalates and the Marines are cornered at the Chosin Reservoir, Tom and Jesse fly, guns blazing, to try and save them. When one of the duo is shot down behind enemy lines and pinned in his burning plane, the other faces an unthinkable choice: watch his friend die or attempt history’s most audacious one-man rescue mission. A tug-at-the-heartstrings tale of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend?

  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Hours of Devotion written by Dinah Berland and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the nineteenth century, rediscovered in the twenty-first, timeless in its wisdom and beauty, Hours of Devotion by Fanny Neuda, (the daughter of a Moravian rabbi), was the first full-length book of Jewish prayers written by a woman for women. In her moving introduction to this volume--the first edition of Neuda’s prayer book to appear in English for more than a century--editor Dinah Berland describes her serendipitous discovery of Hours of Devotion in a Los Angeles used bookstore. She had been estranged from her son for eleven years, and the prayers she found in the book provided immediate comfort, giving her the feeling that someone understood both her pain and her hope. Eventually, these prayers would also lead her back to Jewish study and toward a deeper practice of her Judaism. Originally published in German, Fanny Neuda’s popular prayer book was reprinted more than two dozen times in German and appeared in Yiddish and English editions between 1855 and 1918. Working with a translator, Berland has carefully brought the prayers into modern English and set them into verse to fully realize their poetry. Many of these eighty-eight prayers, as well as Neuda’s own preface and afterword, appear here in English for the first time, opening a window to a Jewish woman’s life in Central Europe during the Enlightenment. Reading “A Daughter’s Prayer for Her Parents,” “On the Approach of Childbirth,” “For a Mother Whose Child Is Abroad,” and the other prayers for both daily and momentous occasions, one cannot help but feel connected to the women who’ve come before. For Berland, Hours of Devotion served as a guide and a testament to the mystery and power of prayer. Fanny Neuda’s remarkable spirit and faith in God, displayed throughout these heartfelt prayers, now offer the same hope of guidance to others.

Book excerpt: "To know the Self is the birth right of every individual. If you do not know who you are even after knowing everything, then what do you really know? The ultimate peace you are looking for lies within you. You are the very truth that you wish to discover. Stop wandering, rest in yourself, keep quiet, and listen to the sacred Silence behind all thoughts, words, experiences, states, sounds, and actions. Recognize the eternal Bliss that you are, in which everything happens spontaneously and without effort." For over a decade, people from different countries around the world have been meeting with Swami Shashwat Ji and seeking his wisdom on life and spirituality. These enlightening Satsangs were meticulously recorded and transcribed, then carefully edited and compiled into a book to allow readers to enjoy Swamiji's unadulterated words on various subjects. After reading Swamiji's teachings, one can easily know one's true Self because he not only answers all questions in a frank and direct manner, but under his loving guidance, the seeker's questions simply fall away. In the end, only Silence and Bliss remain and reveal themselves as our true nature, which does not go anywhere and does not come from anywhere, for it has always been there. Swamiji awakens us to this essential Truth and invites us to embark on the journey to Self-discovery and inner peace. About the Author Swamiji was born in 1985 in a small village in Madhya Pradesh in central India, on the banks of the river Narmada. As a child, he was curious by nature, eager to know about the lives and sadhana or spiritual practices of saints like Dhruv and Prahlad, about snature, about life and death. At the tender age of five, he began chanting Lord Rama’s name for several hours daily. At the time, he did no other practice and knew nothing else except that he wanted to unite with the Lord. His thirst for the Truth led him to leave his home at the age of fourteen, and he started visiting different places of pilgrimage and meeting different saints along the way. Occasionally, he would stay with his guru, Baba Shri Gajanand Ji Maharaj, and serve him with love and devotion.

Book Climate Change and the Art of Devotion

Download or read book Climate Change and the Art of Devotion written by Sugata Ray and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the enchanted world of Braj, the primary pilgrimage center in north India for worshippers of Krishna, each stone, river, and tree is considered sacred. In Climate Change and the Art of Devotion, Sugata Ray shows how this place-centered theology emerged in the wake of the Little Ice Age (ca. 1550–1850), an epoch marked by climatic catastrophes across the globe. Using the frame of geoaesthetics, he compares early modern conceptions of the environment and current assumptions about nature and culture. A groundbreaking contribution to the emerging field of eco–art history, the book examines architecture, paintings, photography, and prints created in Braj alongside theological treatises and devotional poetry to foreground seepages between the natural ecosystem and cultural production. The paintings of deified rivers, temples that emulate fragrant groves, and talismanic bleeding rocks that Ray discusses will captivate readers interested in environmental humanities and South Asian art history. Book Framing the Ocean 1700 to the Present

Download or read book Framing the Ocean 1700 to the Present written by Tricia Cusack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the eighteenth century, the ocean was regarded as a repulsive and chaotic deep. Despite reinvention as a zone of wonder and pleasure, it continued to be viewed in the West and elsewhere as ?uninhabited?, empty space. This collection, spanning the eighteenth century to the present, recasts the ocean as ?social space?, with particular reference to visual representations. Part I focuses on mappings and crossings, showing how the ocean may function as a liminal space between places and cultures but also connects and imbricates them. Part II considers ships as microcosmic societies, shaped for example by the purpose of the voyage, the mores of shipboard life, and cross-cultural encounters. Part III analyses narratives accreted to wrecks and rafts, what has sunk or floats perilously, and discusses attempts to recuperate plastic flotsam. Part IV plumbs ocean depths to consider how underwater creatures have been depicted in relation to emergent disciplines of natural history and museology, how mermaids have been reimagined as a metaphor of feminist transformation, and how the symbolism of coral is deployed by contemporary artists. This engaging and erudite volume will interest a range of scholars in humanities and social sciences, including art and cultural historians, cultural geographers, and historians of empire, travel, and tourism.
