Book A Comparison of Satellite observed Sea surface Temperatures with Ground Truth in the Indian Ocean

Download or read book A Comparison of Satellite observed Sea surface Temperatures with Ground Truth in the Indian Ocean written by Ants Leetmaa and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daily worldwide sea-surface temperature maps are produced by the National Environmental Satellite Service. For the first half of 1975, sea-surface temperatures recorded on these maps were compared with concurrent ship observations in the Indian Ocean. Additional comparisons were made with historical data. These show systematic differences between the satellite and sea-surface observations. The satellite-derived temperatures appear to be too low along the equator and along the East African coast in the vicinity of the equator. Furthermore, in April, May, and June the areas off the equator (and not along the coast) appear to have temperatures that are too high. Although the mean differences are not large (1°-2°C), the fact that the errors vary in time and space made it difficult to apply the satellite data for oceanographic interpretations.

Book Operational Oceanography in the 21st Century

Download or read book Operational Oceanography in the 21st Century written by Andreas Schiller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade the significant advances in real-time ocean observing systems, ocean modelling, ocean data assimilation and super-computing has seen the development and implementation of operational ocean forecast systems of the global ocean. At the conclusion of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) in 2008 ocean analysis and forecasting services were being supported by 12 international centres. This book is about ocean forecasting - a maturing field which remains an active area of research, and includes such topics as ocean predictability, observing system design, high resolution ocean modelling and ocean data assimilation. It presents the introduction to ocean forecasting which provides a foundation for new opportunities in areas of coupled bio-geochemical forecasting and coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean forecasting. The book describes an updated account of research and development to improve forecast systems, determining how best to service the marine user community with forecast information as well as demonstrating impact to their applications. It also discusses operational centres that are now supporting a range of real-time ocean services including online graphical and data products for their user communities and their feedback on the quality of information. The contents of this book are aimed at early career scientists and professionals with an interest in operational oceanography and related ocean science. There are excellent opportunities for exciting careers in the emerging field of operational oceanography in order to address current and future challenges as well as provide the supporting services to a rapidly growing user community.

Book Potential Impact of Satellite Data on Sea Surface Temperature Analysis

Download or read book Potential Impact of Satellite Data on Sea Surface Temperature Analysis written by John C. Wilkerson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea surface temperature field of a 10 x 20 degree area of the North Atlantic is constructed from synoptic temperatures of the ocean surface obtained from High Resolution Infrared Radiometer (HRIR) data from NIMBUS II meteorological satellite. The computer analysis of these satellite data is compared with the computer analysis of three and one half days of conventional ship data produced for the same time period by the Fleet Numerical Weather Central (FNWC), Monterey, California, with a manual analysis of the same ship data prepared by the Fleet Weather Central, Norfolk, Virginia, and with an experimental numerical analysis done by NAVOCEANO. Book A Study of the Relationship Between Oceanic Chemical Mesoscale and Sea Surface Thermal Structure as Detected by Satellite Infrared Imagery

Download or read book A Study of the Relationship Between Oceanic Chemical Mesoscale and Sea Surface Thermal Structure as Detected by Satellite Infrared Imagery written by Don Alan Nestor and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the study of ocean fronts and eddies has become increasingly important to the U.S. Navy for they are of vital importance in understanding underwater sound transmission. From the history of satellite pictures for the area of the ocean off the central California coast, it appears that cold water which has come to the surface as a result of upwelling has become intertwined within the California Current. The persistent thermal features in the sea surface which are formed were the subject area of this study. Direct telephone contact was established with the satellite receiving station which afforded real time satellite information as to the thermal structure of the sea surface on a mesoscale. This satellite sensed thermal structure was then compared with in situ nutrient and temperature data collected on three cruises on board the research vessel ACANIA. The agreement between the in situ data and the satellite imagery was very strong and the utilization of satellite imagery was shown to be a very effective method to localize an ocean front.

Book A Synoptic Approach to Studying Changes in Sea Surface Temperature Using Geostationary Satellite Data

Download or read book A Synoptic Approach to Studying Changes in Sea Surface Temperature Using Geostationary Satellite Data written by M. R. Stevenson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from radiometers aboard meteorological satellites provide a unique method of study surface thermal features of the ocean on a large scale, synoptic basis. The utility of such a data base, however, depends upon both thermal and spatial resolution of the sensors. Because the geostationary SMS and GOES satellites provide essentially the same geometric prespective each time the earth is scanned, this type of orbital platform was selected for use in this study. Three computer programs are used in sequence to process and convert the data into a machine contoured map of surface temperature. Each chart covers a 15 deg x 15 deg area and uses a map scale of 8 million to 1. The contour interval is set at 2 deg C. When the software becomes operational, the contoured maps of temperature will be of considerable use for diverse regional studies such as marine climatology and marine resource development.
