Book excerpt: Lobsters are one of the most commercially important groups of animals harvested and farmed throughout the world. Bringing high prices on the market and the table, the results and yields of farmed species has seen continued growth. Under the Editorship of Bruce Phillips an international team of authors provide exhaustive coverage of these fascinating creatures, stretching from growth and development to management and conservation, providing the reader with: Key information for lobster farmers and harvesters Organisation of the species by genera for ease of use Coverage of parasites, pathogens and commensals; their impact, detection and measurement Fisheries scientists, aquaculture personnel, aquatic and invertebrate biologists, physiologists, ecologists, marine biologists and environmental biologists will all find this a vital source of reference. Libraries in universities and research establishments where biological and life sciences and fisheries and aquaculture are studied and taught will find it a valuable addition to their shelves.

Book In the Wrong Place Alien Marine Crustaceans Distribution Biology and Impacts

Download or read book In the Wrong Place Alien Marine Crustaceans Distribution Biology and Impacts written by Bella S. Galil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Wrong Place: Alien Marine Crustaceans - Distribution, Biology And Impacts provides a unique view into the remarkable story of how shrimps, crabs, and lobsters – and their many relatives – have been distributed around the world by human activity, and the profound implications of this global reorganization of biodiversity for marine conservation biology. Many crustaceans form the base of marine food chains, and are often prominent predators and competitors acting as ecological engineers in marine ecosystems. Commencing in the 1800s global commerce began to move hundreds – perhaps thousands – of species of marine crustaceans across oceans and between continents, both intentionally and unintentionally. This book tells the story of these invasions from Arctic waters to tropical shores, highlighting not only the importance and impact of all prominent crustacean invasions in the world's oceans, but also the commercial exploitation of invasive crabs and shrimps. Topics explored for the first time in one volume include the historical roots of man's impact on crustacean biogeography, the global dispersal of crabs, barnacle invasions, insights into the potential scale of tropical invasions, the history of the world's most widely cultured shrimp, the invasive history and management of red king crabs in Norway, Chinese mitten crabs in England, and American blue crabs in Europe, the evolutionary ecology of green crabs, and many other subjects as well, touching upon all ocean shores.

Book Climate Change and Epizootic Shell Disease in American Lobsters Homarus Americanus

Download or read book Climate Change and Epizootic Shell Disease in American Lobsters Homarus Americanus written by Michael W. Stephens (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epizootic shell disease (ESD) of the American lobster (Homarus americanus) is a bacterial disease that erodes the shell of the lobster and has been common south of Cape Cod since 2000. As ocean temperatures have increased, epizootic shell disease has moved northward. Disease outbreaks have potential cataclysmic implications for the state of Maine due to coastal communities' income dependence on a lobster. The goal of this thesis was to access the state of epizootic shell disease in Maine, as well as identify temporal and spatial trends of disease incidence. Additionally, links between water temperature and disease incidence in the Gulf of Maine were investigated. ESD incidence was investigated using data provided by the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Lobster Sea Sampling Program.
