Book The Professional Socialization of Graduating Students in Generic and Two plus two Baccalaureate Completion Nursing Programs

Download or read book The Professional Socialization of Graduating Students in Generic and Two plus two Baccalaureate Completion Nursing Programs written by Connie Lynn Clark and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No significant difference was found between the level of professional socialization of graduating students of two-plus-two baccalaureate completion nursing programs and graduating students of generic baccalaureate programs. No significant difference was found in professional socialization between students from the two basic RN education programs prior to BSN completion. No significant relationship was found between professional socialization and age for all the respondents, and between professional socialization and years of employment as a RN, and professional role socialization and area of major nursing experience for the baccalaureate completion students. Although the movement toward the baccalaureate degree as entry into practice is a goal that will move nursing closer to recognition by other disciplines as a true profession, there is currently a need to provide continuing education for the many who do not have a baccalaureate degree. The creation and development of baccalaureate completion programs should be encouraged so that nurses with a diploma or an associate degree will have an avenue for furthering their education.

Download or read book From Student to Nurse written by Ida Harper Simpson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1979-12-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of student nurses at Duke University, Professor Simpson challenges earlier research by demonstrating that a professional school does socialise its students. In addition, by constructing a model that brings together competing theories of socialisation, she finds that socialisation is not necessarily cumulative or unidirectional. Conceptualisations that focus on individual students, such as those emphasising role modelling, student values or peer relations, obscure the most significant conditions and processes. The program of a school is the fundamental structure of occupational socialisation and this structure, not its students, should be blamed for failures and praised for success.

It also can be used as a template for compilation of other concepts central to nursing and can serve as a resource for further studies in transitions. It is an excellent addition to the nursing literature." Score: 95, 4 Stars. --Doody's "Understanding and recognizing transitions are at the heart of health care reform and this current edition, with its numerous clinical examples and descriptions of nursing interventions, provides important lessons that can and should be incorporated into health policy. It is a brilliant book and an important contribution to nursing theory." Kathleen Dracup, RN, DNSc Dean and Professor, School of Nursing University of California San Francisco Afaf Meleis, the dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, presents for the first time in a single volume her original "transitions theory" that integrates middle-range theory to assist nurses in facilitating positive transitions for patients, families, and communities. Nurses are consistently relied on to coach and support patients going through major life transitions, such as illness, recovery, pregnancy, old age, and many more. A collection of over 50 articles published from 1975 through 2007 and five newly commissioned articles, Transitions Theory covers developmental, situational, health and illness, organizational, and therapeutic transitions. Each section includes an introduction written by Dr. Meleis in which she offers her historical and practical perspective on transitions. Many of the articles consider the transitional experiences of ethnically diverse patients, women, the elderly, and other minority populations. Key Topics Discussed: Situational transitions, including discharge and relocation transitions (hospital to home, stroke recovery) and immigration transitions (psychological adaptation and impact of migration on family health) Educational transitions, including professional transitions (from RN to BSN and student to professional) Health and illness transitions, including self-care post heart failure, living with chronic illness, living with early dementia, and accepting palliative care Organization transitions, including role transitions from acute care to collaborative practice, and hospital to community practice Nursing therapeutics models of transition, including role supplementation models and debriefing models

Book The Person Inside the Nurse

Download or read book The Person Inside the Nurse written by Bobbi Biggs and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal ofthis research was to gain an understanding ofthe process ofprofessional socialization by accessing role meaning ofstudents engaged in a BScN program. Students from each ofthe four years and faculty members from the school ofnursing volunteered as participants. G. Kelly's (1955) Personal Construct Theory provided the framework to determine awareness and constructed meanings. A reflective tool, called LifeMapping, was adapted and utilized to relate student experiences within education that have attributed to nurse role meaning. Focus group interviews verified data interpretation. Students are informed oftheir choice to study nursing through part-time and volunteer work, secondary school cooperative placements. Descriptions reveal that choices are tested and both positive and negative aspects ofthe role observed. Bipolar images of good and bad nurses seem to be context-related. These images may establish biases in choices related to learning experiences. The person inside ofeach aspiring nurse interprets, revises and understands experiences to incorporate individual meaning into their value and belief structures. Students are aware ofchanges and descnbe them as developments that occur personally up to Year ill and role-image changes that begin in Year II. The major difficulty that students encountered was descnbed as negative attitudes towards their anticipated role. Humanistic-interactionist philosophies are echoed in student accounts of learning experiences. Growth and role development corresponds to process factors of small group, problem-base learning.
