Book Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea written by James E. Hoare and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea (Republic of Korea) is the more successful of the two Koreas in both economic and political terms. Even the Asian economic crisis of 1997–1998, which hit badly, was weathered successfully, and when the next crisis came along in 2007, South Korea coped better than many other countries. This economic strength, taken with the steady progress of democratization since 1987, indicates that when the peninsula is eventually reunified, as one day it probably will be, a new unified Korea will follow the South Korea model rather than that of North Korea. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Republic of Korea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lautensach[s "Korea" is a regional geography, the most comprehensive one ever written on Korea in a western language. It was written before the country was divided and provides a waelth of information on the entire country, particularly on the north, something that has been difficult toobtain in the West in the past forty years. Unfortunately, only very few volumes survived the end of World War II, so that it has been very difficultto get hold of the book. Lautensachh[s "Korea" is considered a classical example of regional geography.

Book Eastern Sentiments

    Book Details:
  • Author : T'aejun Yi
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2013-03-05
  • ISBN : 023114945X
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book Eastern Sentiments written by T'aejun Yi and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yi T'aejun was a prolific and influential writer of colonial Korea, and an acknowledged master of the short story and essay. Born in northern Korea in 1904, Yi T'aejun settled in Seoul after a restless youth that included several years of study in Japan. In 1946, he moved to Soviet-occupied North Korea, but was caught up in a purge of southern communists and forced into internal exile a decade later. It is believed Yi T'aejun passed away sometime between 1960 and 1980. His works were banned in South Korea until 1988, when censorship laws concerning authors who had sided with the north were eased. The essays in this collection reflect Yi's distinct voice and lyrical expression, revealing his thoughts on a variety of subjects, ranging from gardens to immigrant villages in Manchuria, from antiques to colonial assimilation, and from fishing to the recovery of Korea's past. Written when fascism threatened the absorption of every Korean into Japan's wartime regime, Yi's essays explore the arts and daily life of precolonial times and attempt to bring that past back to life in his present. A final long essay takes the reader through Manchuria, where Yi laments the scattering of Koreans throughout the Japanese empire while celebrating human perseverance in the face of loss and change.
