The United States continues to experience urbanization with its vast urban corridors on the east and west coasts. Although urban weather is driven by large synoptic and meso-scale features, weather events unique to the urban environment arise from the characteristics of the typical urban setting, such as large areas covered by buildings of a variety of heights; paved streets and parking areas; means to supply electricity, natural gas, water, and raw materials; and generation of waste heat and materials. Urban Meteorology: Forecasting, Monitoring, and Meeting Users' Needs is based largely on the information provided at a Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate community workshop. This book describes the needs for end user communities, focusing in particular on needs that are not being met by current urban-level forecasting and monitoring. Urban Meteorology also describes current and emerging meteorological forecasting and monitoring capabilities that have had and will likely have the most impact on urban areas, some of which are not being utilized by the relevant end user communities. Urban Meteorology explains that users of urban meteorological information need high-quality information available in a wide variety of formats that foster its use and within time constraints set by users' decision processes. By advancing the science and technology related to urban meteorology with input from key end user communities, urban meteorologists can better meet the needs of diverse end users. To continue the advancement within the field of urban meteorology, there are both short-term needs-which might be addressed with small investments but promise large, quick returns-as well as future challenges that could require significant efforts and investments.

Book excerpt: Studies of convection in geophysical flows constitute an advanced and rapidly developing area of research that is relevant to problems of the natural environment. During the last decade, significant progress has been achieved in the field as a result of both experimental studies and numerical modelling. This led to the principal revision of the widely held view on buoyancy-driven turbulent flows comprising an organised mean component with superimposed chaotic turbulence. An intermediate type of motion, represented by coherent structures, has been found to play a key role in geophysical boundary layers and in larger scale atmospheric and hydrospheric circulations driven by buoyant forcing. New aspects of the interaction between convective motions and rotation have recently been discovered and investigated. Extensive experimental data have also been collected on the role of convection in cloud dynamics and microphysics. New theoretical concepts and approaches have been outlined regarding scaling and parameterization of physical processes in buoyancy-driven geophysical flows. The book summarizes interdisciplinary studies of buoyancy effects in different media (atmosphere and hydrosphere) over a wide range of scales (small scale phenomena in unstably stratified and convectively mixed layers to deep convection in the atmosphere and ocean), by different research methods (field measurements, laboratory simulations, numerical modelling), and within a variety of application areas (dispersion of pollutants, weather forecasting, hazardous phenomena associated with buoyant forcing).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past efforts to estimate wind speeds over a large lake have met with very limited success. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that, with a combined theoretical-empirical approach, winds over a lake can be obtained from transformed wind speeds at nearby land stations. The theoretical results provide a basis for comparison of many empirical data sets and establish a rational means of analyzing the expected differences between winds over land and those over a marine surface. This in turn affords a means of examining systematic variations in the ratio of wind speeds over a lake to wind speeds over land. The good agreement between theory and observation indicates that wind estimates over the lake can be made for a wide range of synoptic conditions with an rms error of under 5 knots. The theoretical curve for the lake wind/land wind ratio provides a stable estimate of lake winds well beyond wind speeds for which there is good empirical data. Consequently, the technique presented here offers relatively good accuracy even in extreme wind conditions where there are little or no direct measurements of winds over the lake.

Book excerpt: Differences between mean monthly winds obtained from actual observations and geostrophic wind derived from mean monthly altitudes of constant-pressure surfaces are examined for January and July at four levels between 10,000 and 40,000 ft. Differences in speed for both east-west and north-south components are significantly and unexpectedly large. These results demonstrate the advantage of using observed winds rather than deduced values to provide climatic winds at altitudes betweet 10,000 and 40,000 ft. Modification of the existing system to include winds from actual observations wherever and whenever possible is recommended. (Author).
