Book Statistical Ecology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Linda J. Young
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 1475728298
  • Pages : 581 pages

Download or read book Statistical Ecology written by Linda J. Young and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a wide range of disciplines, this book explains the formulae, techniques, and methods used in field ecology. By providing an awareness of the statistical foundation for existing methods, the book will make biologists more aware of the strengths and possible weaknesses of procedures employed, and statisticians more appreciative of the needs of the field ecologist. Unique to this book is a focus on ecological data for single-species populations, from sampling through modeling. Examples come from real situations in pest management, forestry, wildlife biology, plant protection, and environmental studies, as well as from classical ecology. All those using this book will acquire a strong foundation in the statistical methods of modern ecological research. This textbook is for late undergraduate and graduate students, and for professionals.

Book Effects of DDT Spray on Fish and Aquatic Insects in Gallatin River Drainage in Montana

Download or read book Effects of DDT Spray on Fish and Aquatic Insects in Gallatin River Drainage in Montana written by W. R. Bridges and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DDT was sprayed at 0.5 pound per acre for elm spanworm control in two drainages in north Georgia in both 1959 and 1960. In one drainage, precautions were taken to avoid the stream, and no significant mortality to aquatic organisms resulted. In the other drainage, DDT reached the stream in a normal spray operation, and serious depletion of aquatic invertebrates resulted. Recovery of bottom organisms was rapid, and total numbers of invertebrates were up to pre-treatment levels after four months.

Book Invasion Biology

  • Author : Mark A. Davis
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2009-01-29
  • ISBN : 0191551198
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book Invasion Biology written by Mark A. Davis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the exception of climate change, biological invasions have probably received more attention during the past ten years than any other ecological topic. Yet this is the first synthetic, single-authored overview of the field since Williamson's 1996 book. Written fifty years after the publication of Elton's pioneering monograph on the subject, Invasion Biology provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the science of biological invasions while also offering new insights and perspectives relating to the processes of introduction, establishment, and spread. The book connects science with application by describing the health, economic, and ecological impacts of invasive species as well as the variety of management strategies developed to mitigate harmful impacts. The author critically evaluates the approaches, findings, and controversies that have characterized invasion biology in recent years, and suggests a variety of future research directions. Carefully balanced to avoid distinct taxonomic, ecosystem, and geographic (both investigator and species) biases, the book addresses a wide range of invasive species (including protists, invertebrates, vertebrates, fungi, and plants) which have been studied in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments throughout the world by investigators equally diverse in their origins. This accessible and thought-provoking text will be of particular interest to graduate level students and established researchers in the fields of invasion biology, community ecology, conservation biology, and restoration ecology. It will also be of value and use to land managers, policy makers, and other professionals charged with controlling the negative impacts associated with recently arrived species.
