Book Environmental Monitoring Program Design for Uranium Refining and Conversion Operations

Download or read book Environmental Monitoring Program Design for Uranium Refining and Conversion Operations written by Canada. Environmental Protection Service and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop recommendations for the design of environmental monitoring programs at Canadian uranium refining and conversion operations. In order to develop monitoring priorities, chemical and radioactive releases to the air and water were developed for reference uranium refining and conversion facilities. The relative significance of the radioactive releases was evaluated trhough a pathways analysis which estimated dose to individual members of the critical receptor group. The effects of chemical releases to the environment were assessed by comparing predicted air and water contaminant levels to appropriate standards or guidelines. The study recommendations for the design of an environmental monitoring program are based on consideration of those factors most likely to affect local air and water quality, and human radiation exposure. Site- and facility-specific factors will affect monitoring program design and the selection of componnets such as sampling media, locations and frequency, and analytical methods.

Book Programmes and Systems for Source and Environmental Radiation Monitoring

Download or read book Programmes and Systems for Source and Environmental Radiation Monitoring written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this Safety Report is to complement IAEA Safety Guide RS-G-1.8 and to provide the methodological and technical details of the design and operation of monitoring programmes for different radionuclides, environmental media and types of facility. It also covers general issues of emergency monitoring during and in the aftermath of an accidental release of radionuclides and gives an outline of dose assessment procedures based on monitoring data and the reporting of information to the regulatory body.

Book Environmental and Source Monitoring for Purposes of Radiation Protection

Download or read book Environmental and Source Monitoring for Purposes of Radiation Protection written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Safety Guide is to provide international guidance, coherent with contemporary radiation protection principles and IAEA safety requirements, on the strategy of monitoring in relation to: (a) control of radionuclide discharges under practice conditions, and (b) intervention, such as in cases of nuclear or radiological emergencies or past contamination of areas with long lived radionuclides. Three categories of monitoring are discussed: monitoring at the source of the discharge (source monitoring), monitoring in the environment (environmental monitoring) and monitoring of individual exposure in emergencies (individual monitoring). The Safety Guide also provides general guidance on assessment of the doses to critical groups of the population due to the presence of radioactive materials or radiation fields in the environment both from routine operation of nuclear and other related facilities (practice) and from nuclear or radiological emergencies and past contamination of areas with long lived radionuclides (intervention). The dose assessments are based on the results of source monitoring, environmental monitoring, individual monitoring or their combinations. This Safety Guide is primarily intended for use by national regulatory bodies and other agencies involved in national systems of radiation monitoring, as well as by operators of nuclear installations and other facilities where natural or human made radionuclides are treated and monitored.

Book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization

Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

Book CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs Second Edition

Download or read book CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs Second Edition written by Kenneth L. Miller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, 2nd Edition, is unique in that it offers practical guidance for managing various aspects of radiation protection programs ranging from the daily operation of a health physics office to the preparation of radiation experts for court appearances as professional witnesses. The book also covers such topics as organization and management of nonionizing radiation safety programs (with special emphasis on laser safety programs) and management of radioactive waste, personnel monitoring programs, radiation accident victims, internal exposure, relative radiotoxicity and radiation therapy patients. Other chapters discuss handling radiation accidents and education and training requirements for radiation protection. Legal aspects covered in the book include the history of radiation court cases, legal implications of record keeping, and preparation for court appearances. CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, 2nd Edition will be a valuable reference resource for medical and health physicists, industrial hygienists, physicians, nuclear engineers, radiation protection regulators, radiation emergency management agents, radiation safety committees, and managers of facilities using ionizing and nonionizing radiation sources.

Book Guidelines on Soil and Vegetation Sampling for Radiological Monitoring

Download or read book Guidelines on Soil and Vegetation Sampling for Radiological Monitoring written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses the sampling of soil and vegetation in terrestrial ecosystems, including agricultural, forest and urban environments, contaminated with radionuclides from events such as radiation accidents, radiological incidents and former nuclear activities. It considers sampling strategies and programmes, which are relevant for both emergency and existing exposure situations. Practical advice is provided on the design and implementation of sampling programmes for soil and vegetation within the framework of environmental monitoring. Examples of best practice on the formulation of optimized sampling strategies for different exposure situations are given based on the experience and lessons learned from implementation of past and existing programmes.

Book Radioactivity in the Environment

Download or read book Radioactivity in the Environment written by Vlado Valkovic and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-09-26 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous sources of ionizing radiation can lead to human exposure: natural sources, nuclear explosions, nuclear power generation, use of radiation in medical, industrial and research purposes, and radiation emitting consumer products. Before assessing the radiation dose to a population one requires a precise knowledge of the activity of a number of radionuclides. The basis for the assessment of the dose to a population from a release of radioactivity to the environment, the estimation of the potential clinical heath effects due to the dose received and, ultimately, the implementation of countermeasures to protect the population, is the measurement of radioactive contamination in the environment after the release. It is the purpose of this book to present the facts about the presence of radionuclides in the environment, natural and man made. There is no aspect of radioactivity, which has marked the passing century, not mentioned or discussed in this book.
