Book excerpt: The author of this book, Gerard Lukken, has always believed that liturgy is not something which is unchangeable or sacrosanct, something to be imposed 'from above'; rather he believes that it must gain shape and content from the situation in which believers find themselves. This involvement is reflected in the hundreds of publications which have flowed from his pen. Lukken's extensive writings offer not only an exciting reflection on the challenges (such as secularization and the decrease in church-going) confronting church and believers, but also on the problems they have faced in celebrating their faith in recent decades. Moreover, his work represents a model for methodological renewal. The key concepts in his theological approach and his evaluation are 'anthropology' and 'semiotics'. These two aspects have left their marks on the organisation of this book which is a selective compilation drawn from his earlier publications. This collection consists of nineteen studies which have lost nothing of their topicality and most of which are now being translated into English, French or German for the first time. By crossing the frontier of language in such a way the editors wish not only to honour a leading specialist in liturgy but also to contribute to academic research into liturgy throughout the world. Gerard Lukken (1933) studied at the Diocesan Seminary in Haaren (Noord-Brabant), the Pontificia Universita in Rome, and the Institut Superieur de Liturgie in Paris. He was professor of liturgy and sacramental theology (from 1967) and director of the Liturgical Institute (from 1992) at the Theological Faculty of Tilburg until his retirement in 1994.

Several original solutions easily adaptable to other provinces are presented. The limited channels of information restrict the sharing of resources and experience. This research could contribute to the improvement of interprovincial dialogue because it aims at a comparative analysis of four official core French programs as second language programs used in Canada in 1989. The elements compared are the learning objectives qualified by De Landsheere and De Landsheere as "the key to the method of curriculum development." The analysis grid of objectives conceived by D'Hainaut has been adapted and applied to the objectives of the programs of British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, in order to bring out their specific characteristics, resemblances, and differences. It is divided into four sections: the French language in France today, linguistic diversity in France, French outside France, and French and gender. The extracts have been drawn from a host of sources and have been selected to illustrate a wide range of attitudes and approaches to the role of French in France and elsewhere in the world. Government decrees and circulars, historical analyses, descriptions by contemporary sociolinguistics in Europe and further afield, and documents produced by organisations which exist to protect the French language all appear. The emphasis of the book is upon objective assessment, but also included are official statements and more stridently chauvinistic appraisals. Certain themes occur - particularly the perennial rivalry between English and French, as well as concern that French is losing its influence in many parts of the world and that it is escaping the authoritarian control that used to be exercised on it. A more recent concern is the charge that French is essentially a sexist language to which speakers need to be more and more sensitised.

Even though typical systems take a substantial amount of time to design, implement and evaluate, there is the continuing need for informaticians to assess the current state of developmen.
