Download or read book Theories of the Nonobject written by M—nica Amor and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Theories of the Nonobject investigates the crisis of the sculptural and painterly object in the concrete, neoconcrete, and constructivist practices of artists in Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela, with case studies of specific movements, artists, and critics. Amor traces their role in the significant reconceptualization of the artwork that Brazilian critic and poet Ferreira Gullar heralded in 'Theory of the Nonobject' in 1959, with specific attention to a group of major art figures including Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, and Gego, whose work proposed engaged forms of spectatorship that dismissed medium-based understandings of art. Exploring the philosophical, economic, and political underpinnings of geometric abstraction in post-World War II South America, Amor highlights the overlapping inquiries of artists and critics who, working on the periphery of European and US modernism, contributed to a sophisticated conversation about the nature of the art object"--Provided by publisher.
Download or read book The Affinity of Neoconcretism written by Mariola V. Alvarez and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 1950s and early 1960s in Brazil gave birth to a period of incredible optimism and economic development. In The Affinity of Neoconcretism, Mariola V. Alvarez argues that the neoconcretists--a group of artists and poets working together in Rio de Janeiro from 1959 to 1961--formed an important part of this national transformation. She maps the interactions of the neoconcretists and discusses how this network collaborated to challenge existing divides between high and low art and between fields such as fine art and dance. This book reveals the way in which art and intellectual work in Brazil emerged from and within a local political and social context, and out of the transnational movements of artists, artworks, published materials, and ideas"--

Book excerpt: "Renata Lucas's practice is a critical interpretation of how our built environment determines actions, behavior and social relationships, and by extension, society's dependency on the preservation of prescribed definitions of space, property and order. By offering an alternative spatial imagination--one that brings into consideration malleability, manipulation and play--Lucas provokes the possibility of new subjective and collective engagement within our built environment. For her first solo exhibition in the United States, Lucas revisits the work Falha (Failure, 2003) an ambitious installation of hinged sheets of plywood that initiates a series of interactions with and reconfigurations of the site, thereby unleashing new expectations of the relationship between individuals and the space of the gallery"--Gallery website.
Download or read book Bruno Dunley written by Carlos Eduardo Riccioppo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive publication on the artist's production, featuring about 100 works, created within the last ten years. Bruno Dunley's (b. Petrópolis, Brazil 1984, lives and works in São Paulo) works depart from encountered images and an analysis of the nature of painting in which linguistic codes, such as gesture, plan, surface, and representation, are understood as an alphabet, a shared vocabulary. Recently, Dunley's practice turned to gestural abstraction, without, however, leaving aside the representation of everyday objects. This is a daring project from the editorial point of view. The works are shown from the same viewing angle, with a bottom wall and a residual margin of a concrete floor. The continuity of this floor constitutes a kind of linear exhibition space. The book is an innovative graphic project, which proposes new relationships between the artist's works. Composed of double pages with flaps, which the reader may open and close to form various arrangements between the works - almost an exhibition format, linear, but not chronological. Contrary to a critical text about the artist's work, the publication is divided into two conversations: "One Conversation" between the critic and art curator Carlos Eduardo Riccioppo and Bruno Dunley and "Another Conversation" with the recording of the dialogue between Bruno Dunley and artists Rodrigo Andrade, Ana Prata, Leda Catunda and curators João Bandeira and Carlos Eduardo Riccioppo, frequent interlocutors of the artist. These two conversations create a background for the reader's approach to Dunley's work and the issues surrounding contemporary painting and art.
