O volume presente tratará varias estadas no Brasil, o autor já "Assistant Professor of Spanish and Portuguese" na Arizona State University.

Download or read book Revis es Historiogr ficas Historiographical Revisions written by Ruth Verde Zein and published by Rio Books. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. How to teach and learn architectural history? To answer this question, eight important panoramic books on Brazilian architecture, produced at different times in the twentieth century and early twenty-first, are revisited. The organizer and her research team explored the possibility of combining quantitative measurement extracted from these books with interpretations of a more subjective nature, revealing complex, non-intuitive, and unexpected paradoxes, shaping some of the "canon's voids". The book presents a methodological set of tools for the critical revision of repeated ideas and axioms converted into canons, allowing for questioning, and opening new paths. The tables and graphs produced in the book are freely interpreted and counterpointed by the views of eighteen contributing authors, ranging from young researchers to renowned guest experts. (Marcio Cotrim, Prof. Dr. Arquiteto, FAU-UFBA).

Download or read book The S o Paulo Neo Avant Garde written by Mari Rodríguez Binnie and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, in the wake of the installation of Brazil's military dictatorship, artists and art collectives in Brazil used their work to critique the government and its sanitized images of Brazil, its use of torture, and its targeted persecutions. Mari Rodríguez Binnie's The São Paulo Neo-Avant Garde studies this art and its engagement with politics and mainstream institutions and traditions. During this period São Paulo was home to a growing number of high-rise office buildings, and many of the artists studied here held day jobs that gave them after-hours access to new technologies of mass production that became foundational to their work. As the author writes, "By appropriating processes such as photocopy, offset lithography, and thermal and heliographic printing, these artists simultaneously challenged the hidebound institutions of São Paulo's art world, as well as the regime's own manipulation of mass media through censorship and propaganda. The artists did so through works that, in their radical content and form, hinged on establishing alternative networks of communication both at the local and international levels." The study moves forward chronologically and thematically, with each chapter examining a particular set of works in their broader contexts"--

Download or read book Lygia Pape written by Iria Candela and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lygia Pape (1927–2004) was one of the most acclaimed and influential Brazilian artists of the twentieth century. As a prominent member of a generation of artists, architects, and designers who embraced the optimistic and constructive spirit of postwar Brazil, she is particularly known for her participation in the experimental art movement Neoconcretism, which sought to rework the legacy of European avant-garde abstraction to suit a new cultural context. Beyond the specific aims of Neoconcretism, however, Pape engaged with a wide range of media painting, drawing, poetry, graphic design and photography, film and performance—constantly experimenting in a quest to confront the canonical and discover unexplored territories in modern art. Following a coup d’etat in 1964, when the establishment of an authoritarian regime shattered dreams of shared prosperity in Brazil, Pape continued to pursue her art against difficult odds. The streets of Rio de Janeiro became her ultimate source of inspiration, as she created participatory works that questioned the space between artist and viewer and the social context of art itself. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} This beautifully illustrated publication accompanies the first major exhibition in the United States devoted to the work of Lygia Pape. Featuring essays by art historians in both North and South America, as well as two previously untranslated interviews with the artist and an illustrated chronology, Lygia Pape is a testament to the artist’s lasting importance to the modern art and culture of Latin America and to her position as a major figure of the international avant-garde.
