Book excerpt: JUNGLE COMICS #100The main character associated with the title is Kaanga. He appeared in every issue of Jungle Comics. When Kaanga was a child his parents died in the jungle and he was raised by apes. The reader never gets to know his real name or his ancestry, but the jungle is where Kaanga feels most at home. In the first issue Kaanga meets his mate Ann, who is a Jane clone, after he rescues her from a white slave trader named Bill Blackton. Ann then joins Kaanga in his jungle existence. After nearly ten years Kaanga was given his own title in Spring, 1949. This ran for 20 issues until the Summer of 1954. One of the reasons for the series demise was the formation of The Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory body that was formed because of moral concerns about the contents of many of the comics of the time. As much of Fiction House's material involved images of scantily clad women they withdrew from the market. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2023 Ray and Pat Browne Best Single Work by One or More Authors in Popular and American Culture, Popular and American Culture Association (PACA) / Popular Culture Association (PCA) 2023 Ray and Pat Browne Best Edited Reference/Primary Source Work in Popular Culture Award (Honorable Mention), Popular and American Culture Association (PACA) / Popular Culture Association (PCA) 2023 Peter C. Rollins Book Award, Southwest Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Associations (SWPACA) A revisionist history of women's pivotal roles as creators of and characters in comic books. The history of comics has centered almost exclusively on men. Comics historians largely describe the medium as one built by men telling tales about male protagonists, neglecting the many ways in which women fought for legitimacy on the page and in publishers’ studios. Despite this male-dominated focus, women played vital roles in the early history of comics. The story of how comic books were born and how they evolved changes dramatically when women like June Tarpé Mills and Lily Renée are placed at the center rather than at the margins of this history, and when characters such as the Black Cat, Patsy Walker, and Señorita Rio are analyzed. Comic Book Women offers a feminist history of the golden age of comics, revising our understanding of how numerous genres emerged and upending narratives of how male auteurs built their careers. Considering issues of race, gender, and sexuality, the authors examine crime, horror, jungle, romance, science fiction, superhero, and Western comics to unpack the cultural and industrial consequences of how women were represented across a wide range of titles by publishers like DC, Timely, Fiction House, and others. This revisionist history reclaims the forgotten work done by women in the comics industry and reinserts female creators and characters into the canon of comics history.

Book Matinee Melodrama

    Book Details:
  • Author : Scott Higgins
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2016-02-26
  • ISBN : 0813563305
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Matinee Melodrama written by Scott Higgins and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before Batman, Flash Gordon, or the Lone Ranger were the stars of their own TV shows, they had dedicated audiences watching their adventures each week. The difference was that this action took place on the big screen, in short adventure serials whose exciting cliffhangers compelled the young audience to return to the theater every seven days. Matinee Melodrama is the first book about the adventure serial as a distinct artform, one that uniquely encouraged audience participation and imaginative play. Media scholar Scott Higgins proposes that the serial’s incoherent plotting and reliance on formula, far from being faults, should be understood as some of its most appealing attributes, helping to spawn an active fan culture. Further, he suggests these serials laid the groundwork not only for modern-day cinematic blockbusters like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, but also for all kinds of interactive media that combine spectacle, storytelling, and play. As it identifies key elements of the serial form—from stock characters to cliffhangers—Matinee Melodrama delves deeply into questions about the nature of suspense, the aesthetics of action, and the potentials of formulaic narrative. Yet it also provides readers with a loving look at everything from Zorro’s Fighting Legion to Daredevils of the Red Circle, conveying exactly why these films continue to thrill and enthrall their fans.

Book The Republic Pictures Checklist

Download or read book The Republic Pictures Checklist written by Len D. Martin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-05-19 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republic Pictures Corporation, began as a motion picture laboratory in 1915. By 1935, Republic had become a studio and released its first movie, Westward Ho! starring a young John Wayne, who would stay with Republic for the next 17 years. Republic would go on to produce highly successful Westerns starring singing cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as well as serial adventure series. The studio cranked out so many exciting (not to mention money-making) serials that it became known as "The Thrill Factory." Occasionally, Republic would produce and distribute "A" features, such as Macbeth and The Quiet Man, but it was the "B" Westerns and adventure serials that they knew best how to produce and market. Until its demise in 1959, Republic fed hungry moviegoers with a steady diet of "B" Westerns, serials, dramas, series pictures and musicals. The Republic Pictures Checklist provides a full listing of Republic releases, with plot synopses, release dates, alternate titles, chapter titles and awards. All of Republic's output, including documentaries and training films, is included.
