Among these vital factors, the right type and input schedule of fertilizers have gathered much scientific concern. Obviously, phosphorus the major limiting nutrient of freshwater culture system has been studied in detail by various workers. However, there is brevity of information on the colossal loss of money encountered by the fisheries sector engrossed in freshwater culture due to the transformation of phosphatic fertilizers into non-recyclable apatite phosphorus. This book provides the first hand information on the utilization of sodium tripolyphosphate in hard water fish culture system for relegating the formation of apatite. The merit of such investigations lie in the fact that the development of a proper phosphatic fertilization schedule for hard water will hold good for brackishwater fish pond also. The results of the present investigation affirm the fact that apatite occurs as the second major constituent of total sedimentary phosphorus. Though the chemical reactions leading to the formation of apatite in aquatic ecosystems remain as a riddle, many of the field trials fortify the operation of the phenomenon of apatite formation in aquaculture system. The present study focuses its prime attention over this crucial reality and advocates the benefits of utilizing sodium tripolyphosphate as a phosphatic fertilizer in aquaculture system. The authors are convinced that intensive field trails in this regard would pave way for the most aspired blue revolution. Then, other chapters discuss calorie and energy as well as micro- and macronutrient needs and requirements. The following chapters deal with the non-nutrient components of the diet, or those that influence the characteristics of food products including texture, odor, flavor, and color. Other topics covered are enzymes and systems of intermediary metabolism (Chapter 6); feed formulation and evaluation (Chapter 7); and salmonid husbandry techniques (Chapter 9). Nutritional fish diseases are also discussed in this book. Some of these diseases include thyroid tumor, gill disease, anemia, lipoid liver degeneration, and visceral granuloma. In Chapter 11, the relationship of nutrition and pathology is given emphasis. This chapter also tackles the diet and general fish husbandry. This topic is very important, because an adequate diet for fish husbandry is the foundation of fish farming.

Book excerpt: The FAO Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity (WSI), initiated in 2013, identified that lack of water resources is a potential disaster scenario for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region. The WSI initiative developed out of 31st Session of the FAO Near East and North Africa (NENA) Regional Conference held in Rome in May 2012, outcomes from the Hyogo Framework Agreement 2005 – 2015, and highlighted through work undertaken by the Arab Water Council in reports in 2004, 2012 and 2015. Several projects were started, including use of non-conventional water resources in integrated agriculture - aquaculture (IAA) systems within the NENA region. Agriculture is the largest food production type in the region and the highest water use. Aquaculture production is also a major food sector and development of integrated systems, for increase productivity and to reduce overall water use in food production, is a useful approach. Water scarcity is particularly acute in arid regions of the NENA region, and is a finite resource, with IAA competing for water with other large sectors including domestic and industrial use. Non-conventional water resources are identified as a potential resource to develop IAA systems in a more unified way, reducing the burden of use on standard renewable water resources. The principle objective of the work was to build broad partnerships to support greater understanding in implementation and use of non-conventional water resource in IAA systems.
